  1. The Hidden Curriculum: Making the Unwritten Rules of Higher Education Visible (EDI seminar
    Oct 1, 2026 · original
Event date and time: Friday 4th December 2026, 13.00 – 14.00 Speaker: Dr Riadh Ghemmour, Learning Skills Programme Co-ordinator at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, and Lecturer (Academic Skills) at Regent College London Info: Higher education involves a wide range of academic, institutional, linguistic and cultural expectations that are often assumed rather than explicitly taught. Navigating these expectations can represent an additional learning challenge for some students, particularly those whose previous educational, cultural or practical experiences have provided less familiarity with the conventions of higher education, including mature, international and first-generation students. This webinar is a provocation which explores the concept of the hidden curriculum and considers its implications for inclusive learning in higher education. Drawing on scho
  2. #Take5 #164 Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW 2025)
    Oct 1, 2026 · original
This #Take5 is brought to you from Brigid Callaghan of Manchester Metropolitan University. We were interested in Brigid’s postings during Dyslexia Awareness Week – and invited her to tell us a little more about what was going on – and why. Raising the Volume Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW) 2025 ran this year between Monday 6 th to Friday 10th October. During this week, my colleague and I – the two ‘in-house’ specific learning differences (SpLD) tutors at Manchester Metropolitan University – released several dyslexia awareness raising posts, throughout the week, on our internal Intranet, which is visible to around 5,000 members of staff – and on the LDHEN jiscmail. We aligned our activities with the British Dyslexia Association’s (BDA) theme “Raising the Volume”. This quote is from British Dyslexia Association website and gives you an idea about the theme: ‘To increase understanding, challe
  3. #Take5 #163 My first book: A few reflections a few months down the road
    Sep 17, 2026 · original
In January 2026, the first book that Laurence Morris co-authored, rather than contributing a single chapter to, was published: A Critical Thinking Toolkit , a guide for HE students. We wondered what it was like to write that book – and so asked Laurence to reflect on the process for us – and to share his reflections with you – with us – the Learning Development community. Perhaps this will inspire you to write a book of your own – or at least – to write that #Take5 blog that you have been dreaming of writing for some time now? Looking back and looking on A few months on from co-authoring the book, it was interesting to reflect on what I had found beneficial about the process, not least as my five salient takes mapped to distinct themes – personal practice and learning, collaboration with colleagues and students, and wider promotion of the Learning Development community. On this basis, in
  4. Launch: LD Heads and Managers CoP
    Sep 11, 2026 · original
Event date and time: Wednesday 11th November 2026, 14.00 – 15.00 We’re delighted to invite you to the launch of a new Community of Practice for Learning Development Heads and Managers. This CoP is a forum for discussion, knowledge sharing and development among peers, complementing the leadership community of practice by drawing on the collective expertise of current managers and heads. The aim is to build a supportive community where members can come together to share ideas, information, issues and developments, and offer one another peer support. We’ll explore key areas of interest and challenges facing the profession, supplemented by community-led training and professional development. Recognising the kind of conversations this CoP is likely to generate, meetings will be supplemented by an active Teams discussion space for members. How it works: Meetings are held online every other mon
  5. Anti-ableist assessment practices: beyond the status quo
    Sep 7, 2026 · original
Event date and time: Tuesday 22nd September 2026, 09.00 – 10.00 This event is free and open to everyone, hosted by the Neurodiversity Community of Practice. Assessment is often cited as an ‘engine’ that drives student learning. What might be achieved if inclusion work started from assessment: what if the ‘engine’ of assessment was redesigned to foster radical inclusion rather than measurement or competition? This presentation introduces practical design principles for inclusive assessment, grounded in a program of research that centres student voice and anti-ableist theorisation of assessment. Bio: Juuso Henrik Nieminen is a senior research fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University, Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor (Docent) at the University of Eastern Finland. His research concerns the social, cultural, and political dim
  6. #Take5 #162 Life on Earth: How teaching, assessment and feedback can help educators and students learn actively together
    Sep 3, 2026 · original
Welcome to this thoughtful and thought-provoking blog by Pen Holland of the University of York. Pen is part of a team who have just finished delivering the third iteration of a fascinating new module about Life on Earth, designed with the specific purpose of helping their students understand the what of biological knowledge – as well as the why and how of studying biosciences in the transition to university. As Pen says they could have designed a traditional course with traditional assignments but they wanted their students to have agency and to be excited by learning… We feel that Life on Earth and its journey through space and time did just that – and developed academic and study skills in the process in meaningful and authentic ways. Pen opens her post by musing on what the feedback we get from students tells us about what we did – and how it worked. Pen’s introductory course is a cre
  7. EDI seminar: Learning Development – Caring for the carers
    Sep 1, 2026 · original
Event date and time: Friday 11th September 2026, 12.00 – 13.00 While we acknowledge work to support student carers within Higher Education, including that of Learning Developers, this seminar will explore what care means to the Learning Developers themselves. In this session, we will look at how caring shapes our roles both professionally and personally and how, with these complexities, we can effectively support ourselves, colleagues and students. Recognising the influence of theoretical concepts around caring and compassionate pedagogies, we’ll explore how this translates to enabling us to be our authentic selves and generate a sense of belonging in a ‘caring’ profession. Drawing on lived experiences and exploring real-world scenarios, we will look to identify some of the key issues and potential opportunities for support going forward. Speakers: Heather Barker, Rachel Stead & Katie Wi
