- The bittersweet euphoria of nitrogen narcosis

That damn aircon Back in 2015, when I was running a dive resort in the Philippines, we had one weekend off work every month. We took the opportunity to get off the island and spend time in “the city.” Hotel, mall, cappuccino, croissants, bookstores… and air conditioning. A little bit of luxury, once a month. While we knew not to set the aircon colder than about 4 °C below the outdoor temperature, over there it had only one setting: “F”, for freezer. Every time you stepped outside, you were immediately engulfed in a soggy blanket of 30+ degree, humid air. Stepping back inside felt like getting hit with an ice brick. Every time we returned from our weekend, I had a cold for a day. Recovered. More or less Usually I’d ignore the cold and go right back into the water to guide dives, teach courses, or take pictures. I’d sniff up a good amount of salt water before the dive, gag, spit and/or blo - Are shark attacks becoming more frequent? We asked the experts.

Alarming news about an alleged increase in shark attacks is circulating on the news outlets and social media. From the Egyptian Red Sea to Australia and the USA, shark attacks seem on the rise. Eric Clua and Andreas Dellios , two eminent researchers in shark behaviour and valued DAN members, shared their findings and recommendations with us. All experts I consulted agree on one point: the lack of a comprehensive, updated database. The best tools we currently have are the ISAF (International Shark Attack File ) and the GSAF (Global Shark Attack File ) , run by the Florida Museum and the Princeton-based Research Institute, respectively. According to the ISAF and the GSAF, the number of lethal shark attacks has doubled in 2025, compared to historical data. From an average of 6-7 per year, deadly shark attacks went up to 12 in 2025. As before, the two leading countries are the US and Austral - Can AI make you a better diver, or put you at risk?

Whether you like it or not, artificial intelligence has become a part of our everyday life. Finding and compiling information used to take hours, and now it can be done in a few seconds. And it is easy to get used to. Almost all aspects of life are affected by the rise of AI, including leisure time and sports; scuba diving is no exception. Just go on the internet, give yourself a cool nickname, and start creating and posting content: “But I have just started diving and have no real experience. Never mind. I’ll just use a chat bot and copy content from actual professionals”. All of a sudden, you’re a wannabe influencer! How AI changed the game in content creation… for the worse It is quite a relief knowing that AI cannot take over diving instructors’ jobs (at least in water skills development), but it is slowly becoming a primary tool for novice divers seeking information, advice, or just - Fires on diving boats: a modern day problem?
Aug 7, 2026 · original
Boat fires are among the most dangerous incidents at sea. They develop quickly, spread easily in confined spaces, and are often difficult to control due to the distance from shore. In recent years, reports of boat fires have become increasingly frequent. In some cases, these incidents result only in material damage, but in others, they have led to serious injuries or even loss of life among divers. While fires can originate from different sources, electrical problems could become one of the leading causes, largely due to the growing use of onboard technology and battery-powered devices. Unfortunately, the exact cause of many boat fires remains unknown. This is often due to the nature of such incidents: vessels may sink, making investigation impossible; boats may be completely destroyed by fire; or official reports may not be available. Despite this uncertainty, broader trends show that b - When experienced divers don’t come home: looking at the system, not just the people

When five people die in a diving accident, and another dies in the recovery effort, the diving community reacts in a way that feels natural and even fair. We look for the decision that went wrong, the person who made it, and the rule that was broken. We reach a verdict quickly, and once we have it, we stop looking. This article is an invitation to slow that process down, engaging the slow, logical part of our brain, moving beyond the emotional reaction. The reason we need to do this is because the questions we ask after an event like this influence whether anything changes and whether the focus is on the right thing. There is a difference between lessons identified and lessons learned – learning means change happens. This article is not an analysis of what happened inside that cave; the investigation is ongoing. Four families waited a long time for closure, and a great deal of what circu - Is Scuba Diving Dangerous?

Editors’ note: this article is addressed to divers and non-divers alike. We hope that it will help non-divers to navigate the at times confusing coverage of diving-related events in the media and would like to encourage our subscribers to share it with their non-diving friends. On May 14th, a group of five Italian scuba divers entered a deep sea cave in the Maldives known as Dhevana Kandu. None returned. Local authorities and Divers Alert Network Europe (DAN EU), scrambled to put together a recovery mission under the leadership of Finnish deep cave explorer Sami Paakkarinen. The team arrived in the Maldives on May 18th and had successfully recovered all of the bodies from the cave three days later. Tragically, the Finnish team could not obtain the necessary permissions and arrive in time to prevent the loss of Sgt. Major Mohamed Madhudhee, a military diver in the Maldivian armed forces. - DAN Europe & the Maldives: 25 years of mutual support
Jun 26, 2026 · original
The support provided by DAN Europe through the complex recovery mission for the missing divers off the atoll of Vaavu in the Maldives builds on more than two decades of cooperation between the diving safety organisation and the government of the Maldives. Projects to enrich each other’s knowledge and know-how began to take shape in the very early 2000s. DAN Europe experts shared best practices in first aid and diving medicine, as well as the difficult aftermaths when victims are recovered. In return, the Maldivian authorities facilitated the work of DAN Europe scientists, allowing them to use the Indian Ocean atolls as a field for real-world experimentation to help make diving safer. Now more than ever, we want to look back at how the cooperation with the Maldives has strengthened over the last 25 years, from diving safety training to the development of telemedicine for divers in remote - Blizzard-Frozen: Polar Scientific Diving at -30 °C

I learned to dive in German lakes and ponds during my early adolescence. Some years later, I was introduced to double tanks and technical diving during a year abroad at a dive center in Norway. After returning to Germany, I began specializing in marine science and combined my passion for diving and research by training as a scientific diver. I’m currently based in Kiel, a city on Germany’s Baltic Sea shore, studying greenhouse gases in various marine systems and supporting diving projects ranging from ocean alkalinity enhancement to archaeology. By most people’s standards, I am used to cold-water diving. Having already experienced the harsh Arctic environment on Svalbard, Norway, during an ecology and toxicology course abroad, I believed I had a solid understanding of how to conduct scientific work in extreme conditions. However, the nine-day Polar Scientific Diving course at the Biologi - DAN’s DCS Database Deep Dive

Regular readers of this magazine will be aware that personalized decompression is a primary long-term research goal pursued by DAN Europe’s science team under the leadership of Prof. Alessandro Marroni. This is no easy mission. Studies in hyperbaric science typically have very small sample sizes, which makes it exceedingly difficult to isolate individual factors with statistical significance. DAN, however, has an ace up its sleeve – or a whole deck of cards, as the case may be: a database of 127,957 real-life dives, including 628 that have resulted in DCS, complete with data from dive computers, collected over a period of 15 years. Accumulating such a vast amount of data, and harmonizing records from different brands of dive computer so that they can be compared, represents a monumental effort on part of the researchers. The records were contributed by 5,907 individual divers, about 80% - DAN Medical Support During the Maldives Recovery Mission
May 23, 2026 · original
When the international recovery mission at Dhekunu Kandu, Maldives in mid May 2026 entered its operational phase, the attention of the diving community naturally focused on the technical divers descending into the cave system. Less visible, but equally essential, was the medical and operational support structure built around them. From diver monitoring and emergency planning to hyperbaric readiness and psychological support, DAN Europe coordinated a continuous medical supervision effort designed to support rescuers operating in a demanding underwater environment. Supporting the rescuers During the search & recovery operations conducted in the cave system, DAN’s role extended far beyond logistics and operational coordination. One of the core priorities throughout the mission was the creation of a medical and operational safety framework surrounding the specialist diving teams involved in - An underwater photographer to keep an eye on: interview with Pietro Formis

Pietro Formis, born in 1978. DAN member since 2008. Pietro Formis wants to make us dream, to take us into the Wonderland that is the underwater world. And he succeeds, having published in Oceanographic Magazine , Scuba Diver Australasia , EZDive , Unterwasser , Naturphoto , Ocean Geographic , SUB , La Rivista della Natura, and others. Pietro earned his scuba certification at the age of 29—“a bit late,” he says, because he had always been diving, just without tanks. Straight after completing his Open Water course, he became a DAN member and soon fell in love with underwater photography. In only a few years, he climbed the ranks of competition, eventually winning Underwater Photographer of the Year with a book, Aqua , co-authored with Emilio Mancuso. He also was a finalist in the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competition, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year , run by the N - Fitness to Dive, Aging, Exercise, and Your Heart

Let’s talk about what fitness to dive really means, how you can mitigate risk and improve your longevity as a diver. Let’s break the most important news first: The single greatest danger to divers isn’t DCS. Nor is it barotrauma, an insta-buddy with terrible skills, or something large with sharp teeth. Instead, cardiac events account for as much as 25-30% of fatal dive accidents. This is the consensus between DAN EU and US, as outlined by Prof. Costantino Balestra (EU) and Dr. Matias Nochetto (US) in a conversation hosted by the late, great Michael Menduno in spring last year. Both DAN experts emphasize that taking care of your cardiovascular health is the single most important thing you can and should do to minimize your risk of a fatal accident. Once you’re in your mid-40s and older, you should have annual checkups with a qualified physician. With this out of the way, let’s take a step
