- Weeknotes: The Small Hours — Week 38, 2026

We begin the week with a fetch quest: I ran around the office delivering a gift and later trying to track down a package, which it turned out had just been delivered to the wrong department. But as a result: Now everything on my is the same colour. Great! Had a great time at Oimachi Tracks, as promised the view was excellent. Sitting under a canopy in the falling rain brings back memories, it is one of my favourite sounds. On a fly-by visit to the Apple Store to procure a spare part, one of the store managers recognised the Rings Challenge badge on my bag and greeted me to ask if I was an employee. Apple seems like a friendly place to work. I didn’t explain how I got the badge. Not me buying the expensive water out of protest for a “you must buy 1 drink” policy. It was Perrier. I don’t understand the hype. Towards my current mission, this week I finally saw a physio about my recurring ru - Weeknotes: Remember Tomorrow — Week 37, 2026

Gosh, the weather hasn’t been great. A record number of days WFH this week. To make WFH more fun, I procured a HHKB Studio: It is great , genuinely the best keyboard I have ever used. I ported the POK3R’s keymap and now I have full muscle memory from my UK daily driver. Better discipline is paying off, even if I’m finding having more unplanned free time a bit boring. I think it’s yielding dividends though: I am in the middle of learning a lesson! Mortified by something I did on Tuesday. A small faux-pas. Positively mortified reader. Put together and presented a new process at an all-hands which I’m quite happy with. Reception was good, I hope that it goes as smoothly as the kick-off! I skipped a day of Japanese revision on Friday and woke up to 3 hours worth of reviews on Saturday morning. That was not fun. Testing a few new ideas in my Kanji revision, to both explore/prioritise how I le - Weeknotes: Commando — Week 36, 2026

Many meetings and events at work this week, including an interesting leadership training day where I learned how personal values manifest in decision-making. I wish I saw this years ago. I put up the fans I picked up from this & last years’ Azabu festival in my entrance hall and it’s a nice little touch that I absolutely love, as well as a reminder of two very different summers. Pizza dinner plus a walk to Osaki was a real highlight. Probably the best pizza I have had in Japan, and the first that I was super impressed by. Finally attempted a run to work. It’s possible, just about. Running outside is highlighting just how ineffective treadmill running is, because where my recovery is great on a treadmill, it’s much harder outside. I’m also worse at regulating my speed. Tackling my inner sprinter is going to be important if I want to do distance seriously. Kuro Sushi is cute, and absurdly - Weeknotes: Mr. Soul — Week 35, 2026

Reader, this was a momentous week, because it marks the first time ever that I asked a teacher for more homework. If only I were as studious as a youngster, eh? On Monday JLPT exam applications opened, and after much rigmarole I am now signed up. Positively bricking it! Last week’s festival food did not sit right with me, and long story short, an unsettled stomach led me to an useful discovery: Calorie Mate . It’s, uh, surprisingly good? And because each piece is exactly 100 calories it is a very easy way of nudging out of a calorie deficit. I will be having this stuff again. Thursday is a farewell-for-now party for a friend under similar circumstances to my move to Bulgaria: I’m delighted but it’s still bittersweet. The restaurant has amazing chicken, and I regret not asking for more. I pass on karaoke this time. I do some big self-care things and home improvements over the week, includ - Weeknotes: Hole In The Sky — Week 34, 2026

Reader, I have a new room-mate. A jumping spider. It is tiny, seems friendly and since I have no idea where it came from, I guess it just lives here now. No lunches this week. I also bruised my ego a little bit. Let’s do better next week, eh? Sat a “surprise” mock Japanese exam. I passed, and lost the most my marks in a section with a type of question I had never seen before. Were I to sit this exam again I would now get a much better score. Went to the second session of leadership training. It went to a new place for such programmes: Looking inwards and at inner personal growth. This is very apt timing and sparked good conversation afterwards, and at least one book loan! Side-quest alert: Made a little NFC reader Chrome Extension for an event at work. NFC readers are mostly a solved problem and the most difficult part was getting the reviews and permissions to ship it. This was fun, I e - Weeknotes: Halo On Fire — Week 33, 2026

Last week I wrote that I had accounted for my newfound free time, and yet this week ended up rather busy. Partly I was studying and building an app for studying. I took Monday off, and Tuesday was a bank holiday, so this was a very short working week. After class and lunch, I spent sunny Monday lazily running errands around town, before joining NH for yakitori dinner. Reader, it was awesome , and the service was something else ~ they ran at exactly 2x speed. Tuesday brought rain, and after some running around, a really nice lunch catch-up. I spent the rest of the day fiddling around with some new synths I bought. Oh yeah, I bought some semi-modular synths. More on that another time. I spent a lot of time over the week noodling on my study app, and making it be an actual app, like, on my phone. I am really happy with the results. Friday evening I bailed on dinner and had a meandering conv - Weeknotes: Here Comes Revenge — Week 32, 2026

New week, new me, and all that. Some new routines are settling, and the combination of not making plans and a few people returning from leave has left me with time, for the first time in a while. Time I have already accounted for. Firstly, I received an actual letter in the mail, about how to write a letter . I kind-of want to frame it. And now I feel inspired to buy a typewriter of my own. Weather was so perfect and delightful for the week, right up until the weekend! I can’t tell if I am slowly adapting, but this summer is more pleasant so far than last year. Monday brought an interesting meet, where we spoke about community . One particularly striking takeaway was that you can just lean into community as a support (and route) for learning something new. This is something I have never done before, because I don’t like being bad at things in public, but I have decided that I want to try - Weeknotes: The Other New Song — Week 31, 2026

Reader, this week I am looking at the world through new eyes. Primed by some smaller conversations last weekend, a discussion about classifying cultures connected big dots in my head, and further reading/thinking/talking led me to an epiphany: I understood my identity for the first time: You see, dear reader, being half, I am both of my nationalities, and yet paradoxically I am also neither. They form an interwoven tapestry where language for one describes the behaviours and thinking of the other, and vice versa. I was blind to this, and its effects. When you look and sound like you’re from a place, people from the same place assume that’s all you are and expect a shared operating-system and language. And the differences grate, on both sides. You’re never truly an insider: It’s hard . But the good news is that many people are in this same group: And throughout the week speaking to these - Weeknotes: The New Song — Week 30, 2026

Reader, where did I leave you? Ah. On the train to watch the World Cup. Monday was a holiday, so we pulled an all-nighter and enjoyed watching Spain win, followed by a quest to find a full English breakfast. 大成功だった! During the day I managed to crank out the chores including finishing a clothes shop. Summer is well and truly here, and for the next six weeks ( at least ) I am going to need to sequester a supply of spare shirts in my office desk. A decent chunk of my time at work this week went into getting last week’s plan moving. This involved a lot of talking but things are going swimmingly and I’m chuffed. My class-load also dialled up considerably from this week: Reader, I have homework assignments , and honestly I could not be happier. Did you know that you can comfortably fit every single weeknote and journal you’ve ever written into the context window of a big model like Fable, and - Weeknotes: Please Don’t Judas Me — Week 29, 2026

On Tuesday the cicadas reawoke, officially marking the start of summer. Both heat and humidity dials are set to “high”: And it’s easier to deal with if you stay outdoors. Between the cracks this weekend I revamped my /about page, and have experimentally added a /now page. My recent MCR and DNB phases have come together in the discovery of producer Toronto Is Broken and in particular their live-set at the Camden Assembly in 2025 . If you only have 2.5 minutes: 1:15:15~1:17:45. Truuuust me. Wrote my objectives for the remainder of the year, and in what might be a first, I published them for the entire organisation to see. This is an effort to improve transparency, or to “be more spinach” IYKYK. Put together a proposal for a big piece of work which may run for the rest of the year. I’m actually quite excited about it. Three pillars, each framed in OPCDA which I’m using for the first time, a
