  1. Idiot Box: Bill & Ted Face The Music On Svod
    Sep 3, 2020 · original
It s clear, six months into the pandemic-induced Hollywood hiatus, that the movie industry is changing—at least for the foreseeable future. On a normal year, the summer blockbuster season would be wrapping up this weekend on Labor Day. Instead, in 2020, it never even happened. Now more or less resigned to sending their movies straight into people s homes with streaming video on demand, Hollywood studios are starting to give up on the idea of opening major films in traditional movie theaters. For the majority of the 2020, studios have given us just a handful token releases, sending animated flicks like Scoob and Trolls World Tour to VOD or live-action kids films such as Artemis Fowl to subscription streaming services. But none of them were exactly tent pole releases (or remotely good, either). Disney became the first studio to blink big time, shipping its much-anticipated $200 million liv

Guess you never know whose skeletons are lurking in your genealogy closet until they start to do some rattling around. Looking For A Better Life In 1598, Pedro Robledo and Juan P rez de Bustillo traveled with the expedition party of Don Juan de O ate into New Mexico as military members. They brought their families with them, looking for a better life. P rez de Bustillo may have been a Sephardic Jew as well. Shortly after traveling along the Camino Real, around Las Cruces near what we now call Radium Springs, Robledo died and was buried on the side of the road. He was supposedly so important that there is now a highway marker. His family carried on and made it further up the Camino Real, dropping off descendants along the way. P rez de Bustillo and his familia made it to Santa Fe, spreading their genes along the way as well. The O ate reign was marked by obscene violence against Acoma Pue

ARIES (March 21-April 19): "A new idea is rarely born like Venus attended by graces. More commonly it s modeled of baling wire and acne. More commonly it wheezes and tips over." Those words were written by Aries author Marge Piercy, who has been a fount of good new ideas in the course of her career. I regard her as an expert in generating wheezy, fragile breakthroughs and ultimately turning them into shiny, solid beacons of revelation. Your assignment in the coming weeks, Aries, is to do as Piercy has done so well. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): "Every day I discover even more beautiful things," said painter Claude Monet. "It is intoxicating me, and I want to paint it all. My head is bursting." That might seem like an extreme state to many of us. But Monet was a specialist in the art of seeing. He trained himself to be alert for exquisite sights. So his receptivity to the constant flow of lov
  6. The Fight For Numbers
    Sep 3, 2020 · original
Mike Tyson famously said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” It sounded easy enough. Stand up and be counted! Go online or fill out the form! But even the best-laid plans can’t account for a series of punches that have landed square on the jaw of a 2020 U.S. Census team that was poised and ready for action. First came COVID and then the unemployment crisis and then the lockdowns and, well, I don’t have to remind you. Two words: murder hornets. (What happened to those guys?) But for many tribal and rural communities, it just wasn’t as easy as filling out the form or hopping online. In a world before masks, the national census was gearing up for the rollout of a new strategy in early March. It was a multifaceted approach, designed to help communities count their own people. The philosophy was simple: The communities know themselves better than the federal governmen

Last week Detroit emergency workers declared a woman dead and placed her in a body bag. Three hours later a staff member at a funeral home discovered she was still alive. According to ABC News Timesha Beauchamp, who was born with cerebral palsy, was placed in critical care on a respirator at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit last week after being declared dead by medical professionals. Earlier in the day, Beauchamp’s family had noticed that her lips were pale, she had secretions around her mouth, and she was having trouble breathing. They immediately called 911 and firefighters rushed to the scene. The Southfield Fire Department released a statement on the incident, saying, “A local emergency department physician pronounced the patient deceased based upon medical information provided by the Southfield Fire Department at the scene. … The Southfield Fire and Police Departments followed all a
  8. Community News: Community Questions Nuclear Waste Storage Site
    Sep 3, 2020 · original
In March of 2017, Holtec International , a private company that makes nuclear waste storage and transport containers, proposed the construction of an interim storage site for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in southeast New Mexico, roughly halfway between Carlsbad and Hobbs. The proposed facility has the capacity to store all of the SNF currently in the country (about 80,000 tons), with space for waste produced in the future as well. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently soliciting public comment on the project until Sept. 22. Holtec and the NRC are required to hold in-person meetings to solicit public comment on the drafted Environmental Impact Statement for the site. Five of those meetings were supposed to happen this year, at several locations across New Mexico—but the COVID-19 pandemic has made them impossible. On March 20 all three U.S. representatives for New Mexico along w
  9. Baked Goods: Biden Might Usher In Legal Weed
    Sep 3, 2020 · original
Last week Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., told reporters that if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is elected president in November, cannabis legalization will likely become one of the top issues on the legislative agenda in 2021. Markey made similar statements back in July to the Young Jurks Mike Crawford. There, he said that Democrats would be able to advance cannabis reform in both chambers of Congress in 2021—with or without Biden s support. He said President Donald Trump s administration is the only thing standing in Congress way. The likelihood of that statement being true seems especially low, however, considering not only Biden s personal distaste for marijuana legalization, but the Democratic party s failure to include legalization on this year s platform. We shouldn t talk about the fact that 69 percent of Democrats and even 54 percent of Republicans now favor marijuana legali
  10. Operation Legend Has Less Than Legendary Results
    Sep 3, 2020 · original
At the end of July, Alibi staff writer Robin Babb asked the questions of Operation Legend most of us were too afraid to consider. Is this part of a much larger scale program from President Trump in an attempt to undermine citizens freedom and safety, with the guise of civil protection masking it? Or were these federal law enforcement officers genuinely here to help? Well, thankfully the Bernalillo County Sheriff s Department Twitter account was kind enough to provide citizens with an update on the work done so far in Southeast Albuquerque, which Weekly Alibi felt would be worth talking about. Let s get the congratulatory issues out of the way. In total there have been 22 arrests made to date. Of those arrests 14 were felony-related, with the other eight being misdemeanors. For those unfamiliar with the differences between the two categories, they break down to an almost easy formula. Is
