It’s an all day live streaming marathon parade from the creative, talented, fun and friendly artists and makers from the Fedi. I recently felt a sudden deep desire to try my hand at some west coast-style/experimental synthesis. After looking at a number of possibilities over a few weeks, I decided to try out the fully modular Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab 2. I’ve never had a true modular system before, so this is my first time doing from-scratch patching. Before today, I’ve spent about 4 hours with the system trying to understand how things work. Given this and the fact that I saw the #WeekOfPatching tag on Mastodon today, and the fact that Greg helped me understand a couple of things yesterday, I decided to sit down and patch something up. I’m super excited to be starting a new series with Greg Wilder called The Clearing: The Clearing is a monthly secular sound environment held in downtown Keene, NH. We present 90 minutes of live, slow-moving, beautiful music, composed and improvised in the room for deep listening, rest, and enjoying one another’s company. This sort of community-oriented, secular + spiritual music event is something I’ve had in the back of my mind for a long time, and I’m super excited to bring it to life. The music has been really fun to prepare for — very different than my usual dark/quirky thing, veering into ambient. The mission for the music is to be beautiful and sublime. I’ve been focusing lately on playing instruments, especially guitar. This is something I’ve done a lot of in my life, but I’ve spent most of my time the last few years focusing more on the production/electronic side of things, and less on the “play an entire piece of music with your hands” side of things. I’ve missed it! Not to mention my abilities have suffered, and I’m not happy about that. Mostly, this has meant playing my acoustic. It’s a low-end Taylor that I bought when I was 18. It’s the only instrument I’ve kept throughout my entire adult life, and I love it madly. BUT a couple of years ago I acquired an electric guitar that I also obsessively love. It’s kind of a weird guitar; it’s an “Eagle” brand, which doesn’t appear to have been a real company. It was made in the FujiGen factory in the early 80s in Japan. (If you know you know.) I was recently asked to participate in a super-cool livestream series being put on by the Spirit of Gravity collective out of Brighton, UK . They’re hosting streams every third Wednesday “to experience new sounds from performers across the world.” That’s me! I’m across the world! I’m working on new album material at the moment, so this was the perfect motivator to get my shit together. I’m really happy with how it’s coming out…and I’m now officially ready to start recording! I highly recommend checking out the upcoming Gravitons shows , which you can catch every third Wednesday at 20:00 UTC (that’s 3pm to you and me, Russ). Let the 2026 gardening season begin!

VERY excited to perform my first real gardening task of 2026: germinating native perennial seeds! This is only my second year starting seeds. Last year I did vegetables (and will do again!), and I wanted to add some perennials to my seed starting setup this year. These seeds require 60 days of cold, moist germination. After the steps in the photos, they went into the refrigerator! Ready to go in the refrigerator!

I read this blog post from Rubenerd awhile ago, and made a few responsive notes I’d like to share. Ruben describes two types of people: The person who, when they hear about a decision you’ve made, always takes the contradictory position. If you chose red, they tell you all about why blue is probably better. The person who reinforces your own decision and goes through the logic of why it’s a good decision. Red is great because et cetera, et cetera. The key phrase Ruben identifies that he likes in the conversation is, I can see why you would… He calls the problem of dealing with type 1 people the “Haneda Problem.” (Seriously, go read his post…it’s awesome and endearing.) My first, second, and third thoughts after reading the article were that I would like to be the sort of person Ruben prefers instead of the sort of person who contradicts. Ambient Guitar in the Studio

I needed a brain break tonight so I finally got around to learning how the mxr layers pedal works, and had a fun time playing around once I learned how to use it. It’s a very cool one-trick pony. The way I put it to my friend: I probably wouldn’t be particularly excited to see a whole show of someone playing one of these (prove me wrong), but it’s really got a vibe, and gets you to play something you otherwise wouldn’t.

I’m not normally a New Year’s resolution/year-end post type of person. Nor am I a selfie 1 type of person, for that matter. Not sure why that is. Maybe I’m just contrary. But this year, the change from 2025 to 2026 is coinciding with some major physical, mental, and emotional shifts for me, so I’d like to take a bit of time to reflect and share. Physical Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes 2 On December 2, I had a partial thyroidectomy. Spoiler alert: it has been transformative, and I should have done it years ago.
