  3. Anthea Chronicles No. 6: My many obsessions, my latest obsession
    Sep 29, 2026 · original
My life has been a series of obsessions. I spin out, devote myself to a new but related skill, and before I know it I’m in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan or learning how to make stained glass. I don’t know if other people are as obsessive as I am. I suspect that any semi-successful classical musician must be at least ridiculously obsessed, and I guess I’m on the deep end of that. People regularly ask me if I ever sleep, or slow down, and wonder aloud if I’m on the spectrum or something. I say “I don’t really sleep through the night, or slow down except very rarely but actually not, and I have no idea if I’m on a spectrum but aren’t we all? Isn’t a spectrum a continuum, and if we aren’t on a range, what the heck are we on, anyway?” I was looking for a Bach cello suite on YouTube about 10 days ago, and I came across this super wack-a-doodle instrument, it was like a baby cello with 5 strings but the

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re diving into seven essential listening pieces of music written by Hispanic composers that you’re likely to hear on our daily playlists. Souvenirs de mon pays by Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) Pianist, singer, and composer Teresa Carreño was born in Venezuela but spent most of her upbringing in the U.S. and in Europe. Earning the nickname “Valkyrie of the piano,” Carreño wrote dozens of works for the keyboard instrument, most of which she intended to perform herself in concert. Despite leaving her native country at a young age, Carreño maintained a strong connection to her heritage, as evidenced in

  7. Anthea Chronicles No. 5: “I play the violin. AND…”
    Sep 2, 2026 · original
What do I do? I play the violin! Seriously, this blog is NOT called “ Chronicles of an Adventurous Arts Administrator ”! And YET…so many classical musicians find that this line of work presents sneaky invitations and opportunities to expand from playing music into teaching music, fundraising, and YES, the joy of administration. Sometimes it’s an easy NOPE. But there are tons of non-bowing-of-the-strings activities that totally overlap with my heartfelt mission to share great music as widely as possible…can’t a girl say yes now and then? As I write this, I’m on an airplane heading home to Oregon from Chicago. It’s been a busy 5 days, an unexpected trip squished precariously into my schedule. Tomorrow morning I’m expecting a horde of eager students arriving at the Majestic Theatre in Corvallis, ready for a week of orchestra, solo classes, lessons, and electives ranging from Instrument Auto
  8. John Pitman Reviews: María Dueñas’ Homage to Heifetz
    Sep 1, 2026 · original
Spanish violinist María Dueñas is still in her early 20s but already has three albums to her name. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Dueñas debuted with “Beethoven and Beyond.” She followed that with the 24 Paganini caprices and has now released an album that is in homage to her hero, that titan of the 20th century, Jascha Heifetz. Dueñas recently spoke with John Pitman , All Classical Radio’s Director of Music and Programming, about her latest album. Homage to Heifetz features works that the composer either debuted himself, such as the Korngold Concerto; or music which he championed such as Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole , which is a work near and dear to the Spanish soloist’s heart. In their conversation below, Dueñas discusses the meaning that these music choices have for her, as well as her deep respect for “Golden Age” recording artists like Heifetz. The interview also features e
  9. The Calm Before the Storm
    Aug 26, 2026 · original
It’s coming up to the last few weeks of summer, and I’m doing all I can to get ready for a busy concert season beginning in the fall. The more I can prepare now, the smoother the coming season will be. My kitchen wall is a mess of printed-out monthly calendar pages haphazardly taped with blue painter’s tape between historic railroad maps of Oregon and an embroidery of my deceased guinea pig. I have written my event dates (about 100 so far), my husband’s concerts (Jason is an incredible cellist and conducts the Corvallis Youth Symphony), and key events for our teenage daughters, who have concerts and competitions of their own. This year is my busiest since leaving Germany, where I was a member of the Artemis String Quartet. The Artemis kept a robust international touring schedule, with seven managers in seven countries, publicist, and a personal secretary. Beyond a touring schedule of aro
  10. Kate Remington Interviews Jon Batiste
    Aug 19, 2026 · original
Jon Batiste by Jen Rosenstein All Classical Radio host Kate Remington recently spoke with multi-Grammy®, Oscar®, and Academy Award® winning singer, songwriter, and composer Jon Batiste about his latest project, Black Mozart . The just-released album is the second in his series exploring the music of Classical composers, which began with the music of Beethoven. On Black Mozart , Jon reinterprets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most beloved melodies as Black American classical music, infused with influences from jazz, rags, stride, blues, and stomps. The result is a vibrant conversation without words – not about genre, but pure expression. Jon says the concept of the album is imagining what Mozart would have experienced if he’d been born in contemporary New Orleans and heard all different genres of music: Blues, Jazz, and Gospel, and how they might have augmented his music.
