- RYA RUG BACKINGS
Aug 8, 2026 · original
HANDWOVEN RYA RUG BACKINGS Several years ago I used to weave Rya Rug Backings and make Rya Kits with hand-dyed wool. Then I moved to the UK – where I found it difficult to sell the rya backings etc. but still made a few. Then International laws on the selling of goods changed, making it even more difficult for the small Indie Craft person to make a living. I am returning to Canada now – back to the Kootenays of BC. I will still continue to travel back to the UK several times a year – while planes still fly. I miss the joy of making and designing rya rugs. Those were always my passion ever since childhood as I sat under my Mom’s friends looms, and looked up at the warp growing over my head. RYA BACKING – 1 TO BE CONTINUED… - EMF Raanu

EMF RAANU TAPESTRY PROJECT Since I have developed severe EMF sensitivities over the past few years, I have been researching how to weave fabrics and textiles that can reduce the amount of EMF I am exposed to. My house has some ‘hot spots’ along the wall that faces 3 WIFI cell towers. I have tested areas of the house using an EMF sensor (TriField EMF Meter) to identify these areas. I thought I would weave a Finnish style Raanu that I can hang over this area of the wall. https://youtube.com/shorts/CR_IgIUa9RE The Raanu has a doubleweave type of structure. The cloth is woven 2/2 tabby. And woven with 2 or more shuttles. Shafts 1 & 2 are raised on the first pick. Shafts 3 & 4 are raised on the 2nd pick. This creates a double weave cloth, with one set of weft threads going over, and the 2nd set of weft threads going under. In this project I am using a Glimakra double shuttle, with one bobbin - Drop Spindling

DROP SPINDLING I don’t know if you are like me – but truthfully – I struggled with using a Drop Spindle for many years. It seemed effortless when I watched others spinning away on their drop spindles – but I just couldn’t get the hang of it. The darn Spindle would always fall to the floor – leaving me holding a sad length of half spun roving. No matter what Spindle I used -the result was the same. I have been doing Nalbinding lately and always think about how my Sámi grandmother stitched away at her Nalbinding – that she would sell in summer months to the ‘rich’ reindeer herding Sámi families. She was a Sea Sámi – who were not as fortunate – depending on the fishing season. TALES OF A SEA SAMI She and her 7 children lived in a turf hut – that would often get snowed in during winter months. She used a Seal Oil lamp for lighting. So I imagine it must have been quite dark – and they sat on - Tales of a Sea Sámi – Episode 3

SEED STITCH PONCHO I have started to knit a wool poncho (for those chilly winter days in the Kootenays) I am using the EMF/wool blend yarn that I spun recently. I spun the yarn to a Worsted weight (approx) After I spun the yarn, I dyed each skein using plant dyes. Using a DK weight handspun yarn, Cast on 96 stitches onto circular needles. Knit 4 rows in Knit Stitch. Place 2 Stitch Markers 1 at the beginning of the row 1 in the middle of the row. I didn’t have any fancy knitting markers so I used short pieces of coloured wool as Stitch Markers. Stitch increases are knit on every other row. Increase a stitch, knit 2 stitches, Increase a 2nd stitch. Continue knitting in Seed Stitch to the next Marker Increase a stitch, knit 2 stitches, Increase a 2nd stitch. Knit in Seed Stitch for the 2nd row. Seed Stitch: Knit 1 Purl 1, repeat across the row. Row 2 – Purl the previous Knit stitch, Knit th - Feltmaking Books

Hand Spinning an EMF Wool Blend Yarn For some reason I have become quite sensitive to various electric currents around me. This has intensified over the past few years, so I have been looking for solutions to my problem. There are some EMF protective clothing options that can be purchased on Amazon and other independent shops. I purchased a few and they do provide some protection but they are not very fashionable. So I wondered if I could spin some EMF yarn and knit or weave my own clothing. I asked AI and the answer was yes. So I will be testing out some different methods of spinning and weaving to see what works. This is where being a handweaver and spinner becomes valuable experience to have. The clothing that I have purchased so far is made of 2 layers: a thin inner layer of knitted silver yarn and a thicker outer layer of knitted bamboo yarn that is knit in a sweat pants type of sty - Knitted Socks Books

Flax Weaving I have restored this article that I originally wrote in April 97. My Allfiberarts.com website crashed last year and I am in the process of restoring and updating many of those files. WAYBACKWHEN: Original file: aa041497.htm Of all natural fibers available, I think flax qualifies as truly a miracle fiber. It is environmentally friendly and is a renewable resource. All of the plant can be used. The seeds can be eaten or used to produce linseed oil. The fiber is processed into yarn and woven into cloth. The term “linen” is used for products that have been made from flax fiber such as linen fabric or tablecloths. Flax Drying Flax or linen fiber is strong, absorbs moisture, has no allergenic properties and softens with continued use. It has a wide variety of applications. It is used in clothing, furnishings, household fabrics, water buckets, yarn and rope. Flax has been grown and - Angora Rabbits

Angora rabbits have long been the pets of kings and emperors. They are believed to have originated in Turkey and were bred by the French nobility. WAYBACKWHEN Original File: aa031797.htm Angora rabbits are known by 4 general breeds. Each breed has a slightly different type of fur quality. English Angoras have very fluffy ears, called furnishings. The fur is quite fine and has very little guard hair. The French Angora fur contains quite a bit of guard hair. However this doesn’t have to be removed before spinning as gives the finished yarn a very fluffy and “spikey” quality. The German Angora was developed through selective breeding, resulting in a rabbit with very high fur yields. Its fur is strong enough for commercial processing. The Satin Angora has a medium length body. It’s wool is very shiny and covers the body, except for the head and ears. They are good-natured and make great pets
