    No hesitation. That is what Christine Melcher recalled feeling when Shaun Friedrichsen approached her about purchasing the Alliance Times-Herald in early 2026. Melcher had worked at the newspaper since November 2024, and “I had already seen firsthand how important the Times-Herald is to Alliance and the surrounding communities,” Melcher said. “I knew I wanted to be part of carrying that forward.” Melcher officially purchased the Alliance Times-Herald on May 1, 2026, and has been working with Friedrichsen on the transition. While the newspaper has changed ownership, Melcher said its commitment to Alliance remains at the heart of what it does. It is a commitment she understands personally, having called the community home since moving from California in 2023.     Alliance American Legion Post 007 has Casket Flags available by request. We currently have 134 flags available with a family name on the flag, additional flags are unmarked. These flags are provided to the families of eligible deceased veterans by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The flags are available at no cost unless shipping is required. Please mail your request to Box 601, Alliance, NE 69301, and state your relationship to the eligible veteran, and personal contact information. Our intent is to disperse these flags ASAP.     Cutline: October 7, 1986: The Alliance Jills (Women Of Today) sponsored a get-acquainted evening Monday at Box Butte General Hospital. Pregnant mothers, fathers, and children attended. As parents watched films, the children were taken on a tour of the hospital and shown where their mothers would be while delivering the new baby.     Congregation members of St. John’s Lutheran Church celebrated God’s Work Our Hands Sunday on September 13. The day is observed church-wide to celebrate and serve our communities. St. John’s members cleaned the old German Lutheran Church at Dobby’s Frontier town; paint the posts on the picnic cover at Carhenge; trash pick-up at Laing Lake; and filling Head Start Backpacks for 40 students per week. They also prepared the preschool area for the upcoming school year, cleaned the church grounds and signed thinking of you and encouragement cards for elder and shut-in members.   5. Cats go First and Second at the Run of the Rocks

    Tuesday Cross Country competition took place at the Courthouse & Jailrock Golf Course. Eight school competed in the Run of the Rocks Invite. Hemingford got a nice performance from Austin Benda and Fletcher Moseman who ended first and second the Men’s division. Benda clocked in at 17:06 while Moseman ended with a time of 17:23. Top placers for the Lady Bobcats were Teagen Thompson who was fourth in the high school level and Adde Bryner who took third in the junior high competition. Team scores had Sidney winning the boy’s championship with 34 with Hemingford second with 41. Gordon-Rushville was the winner in the high school’s team race with 11 with Sidney second with 35. Middle school winner for the boys was Mitchell with Sidney second and Hemingford fifth. Mitchell was also the champ in the junior high girl’s division with 19. Hemingford was the runner up with 37.   6. First Place Finish by Vergil Leads AMS to Team Title at Ogallala

    Some of the best area runners hit the course on Friday for the Ogallala Invite. Crandall Creek Country Club was the host of the Cross Country event. Twenty five high schools and nineteen junior high teams were in action. The winner in the junior high girl’s team race was Alliance who ended with 23 with Mitchell second with 28. Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was Penn Vergil who was first with a time of 11:45. Teammate Riley Bixby was seventh for AMS. Sidney was the champ in the boy’s junior high division with 35 with Perkins County second with 48. AMS tallied 107 and ended seventh. In the high school level, Gothenburg won the boy’s trophy with 30 with Scottsbluff second with 42. Hemingford was fourth with 84. Top placer for the Cats was Austin Benda who ended fourth with a time of 16:35. Fletcher Moseman was seventh with a time of 17:01. Alliance scored seventh and got a 20th place
  7. AHS Falls in Three to Chadron

    Undefeated Chadron took on Alliance on Tuesday in Chadron. All three sets in the varsity ball game where close but in the end, it was the hosts prevailing. CHS was victorious in the varsity battle by scores of 25 20 25 20 and 25 18. The Bulldogs also dropped the JV affair 25 17 25 12 and the reserve contest 25 14 25 17. With the loss, Alliance’s varsity squad falls to 2 and 6 for the year. AHS stormed out to a nice lead in the opening set of the varsity game. Four points including three aces by Bulldog Brinlee Lanik keyed the surge. Alliance got an opening kill by Ryli Poss to began the scoring. The teams then swapped tallies with AHS getting kills by Brooke Bailey and Poss and a Bailey point. Up 8 to 6, the Bulldog lead went to three after a point Jadyn Aguallo.   8. Gering Grinds Out Win Over Dog 8th Grade Team

    Play Saturday morning between the Alliance Middle School 8 th graders and Gering was a tight contest with both clubs scoring 2 touchdowns. Gering was able to cash in on one of their PATs and post the win 14 to 12. The battle took place in Alliance. With the defeat, AMS starts the year at 0 and 1. A late score by the hosts got the Bulldogs to within 2 at 14 to 12 but their ensuing extra point was stopped. Alliance had one more chance in the final moments but were turned away. Gering led 14 to 0 before 2 TDs by the hosts got them close. Gering found the end zone first. The guests scored on a 38 yard TD pass with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter. Alliance defensive end Bo McCune sack the Gering QB on the point after as the guests led 6 to 0.     Games 2 and 3 of the Douglas Tournament for the Alliance volleyball team were against Wright and Douglas. AHS got their first win for the season, downing Wright in two sets. Later in the day, the Dogs fell in two to the Bearcats from Douglas. Scores in the victory over the Panthers were 25 22 and 25 19. In the Douglas contest, the Lady Bulldogs drop the affair 25 15 25 19. Alliance’s record after Friday stood at 1 and 3. First set action against Wright had Alliance leading throughout. Ace serves by Brooke Bailey and Ryli Poss gave Alliance the lead at 10 to 6. Alliance would lead 17 to 15 before a Panther rally gave Wright a lead at 22 to 20.     St. Agnes took on Cody Kilgore in the second game of the Hyannis Tri on Thursday. Alliance made quick work on the Cowgirls with a 25 8 25 8 W, garnering their first victory on the year. The Crusaders got 13 points from Allie Armstrong to lead the offense. Nala Reza added 9 points as the Academy improved to 1 and 1 for the season. St. Agnes dropped the opener in three sets to the hosts. Early points and kills by Quinn Robertson, Kale Hulquist, Avery Breen, and Armstrong helped SA take a big early lead at 8 to 1. After a kill by Hulquist, Armstrong went to the line and scored 7 in a row as Alliance went up 17 to 3. The set came to a conclusion with the Academy getting a kill and 6 straight by Reza.
