  1. Interview with Ada Palmer: History of ideas and our climate imaginations
    Jul 11, 2025 · original
Ada Palmer's photo CC-BY 4.0 Henry Söderlund For this year's edition the Warsaw sci-fi/fantasy convention Bazyliszek invited a special guest: a historian and a science fiction author Ada Palmer [ Homepage ]. Despite a long day taking parts in other panels, she agreed to give me an interview about her specialty: the history of ideas - and how it relates to our struggles with climate imagination and Solarpunk. You can listen to it as a special episode of Solarpunk Promts , also on Spotify and Apple Podcasts ! Professor Palmer touches a lot of topics, including the ideas of purity, millenarianism, the (misconceptions about the) fall of Rome, the Daybreak game and Astro Boy . More sources in the podcast description!
  2. Dlaczego solarpunk jest trudny?" - panel z konwentu Bazyliszek
    Jul 11, 2025 · original
  4. Build a Better World TTRPG Jam Solarpunk Workshop
    May 11, 2025 · original
Game jam banner art by Roque Romero Continuing research into the topic of game design from my previous overview post I was a positively surprised to find a Build a Better World TTRPG Jam : “We live in capitalism,” said Le Guin, “Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.” It’s up to us, as games makers, to help people envision alternatives to how we live now, how we can build a better world. TTRPGs are a fantastic way to build community and bring solace in harrowing times. Many of us, all over the world, are going through difficult and anxious days. With the community at The Lost Bay server we’ve decided to host this jam as a space for the indie TTRPG scene to come together and imagine a better future. Not being able to fully participate by creating a game, I decided to host a workshop titled "Solarpunk: better futures among the changing climate - and how to design th
  5. Story Seed Library
    May 11, 2025 · original
Story Seed Library logo by Natalia Vish Imagining a better future in the face of climate change is hard whether you use words - or images, as I have written extensively before. With no proper alphabet , let alone a dictionary , conveying the meanings such as degrowth or sharing economy requires a lot of careful, intentional work. In the recent years, with the advent of generative AI we could see more and more articles on Solarpunk - or virtually anything - being illustrated by such mindless AI creations, wasting resources and stealing artstyles, while conveying nothing but vibes. Flooded by the sleek "trees on buildings" aesthetic we slowly lose any idea of what the better climate future ideas can actually be . That's why together with almost a dozen artists, on the April 29th 2025 we launched the Story Seed Library - a new platform with intentional, human-made Solarpunk art licensed und
  6. Notes Towards a Solarpunk Game Design - Overview
    Jan 18, 2025 · original
Solarpunk Game Design Sketch by Scan101 I've always been interested in game design and how subtly it can teach and influence us. It's not only how a given game is constructed on the surface, but also what emergent behaviours it can induce in us - and make us internalize, more or less consciously. I find Solarpunk fascinating as a genre which is connected to - but distinct from - other kinds of climate and science fiction. Its many perspectives are an attempt to balance a big, global narrative of saving the planet and creating a sustainable civilization with a very humane and communal perspective of our way there. I've been working on this blogpost for a year and I see that it's never going to be as comprehensive as I would like to. In the spirit of "done is better than perfect", let me then present you with my Notes Towards - and hope that you find them useful! Game Type Legend V - Video
  7. Solarpunk w INN:Poland
    Dec 29, 2024 · original
Ilustracja tekstu z INN:Poland używająca fragmentów ilustracji The Lemonaut, PannyN i Commando Jugendstil dostępnych na solarpunk.pl W INN:Poland pojawił się artykuł Sebastiana Luc-Lepianki pod tytułem Solarpunk – ruch społeczny, który może przemówić do ludzi bardziej niż akcje Ostatniego Pokolenia . Wprowadza on czytelników w tematykę Solarpunka, odnosi go do obecnych w Polsce protestów klimatycznych i opowiada o jego relacji z wiecznie-zjadającym-idee kapitalizmem.
  8. Technology as crystallized community
    Jul 22, 2024 · original
"Ice Crystals" photo CC-BY spurekar For a few years now, I've been analyzing how technology is represented in fiction and popular culture. I not only mean specific technologies or devices, but also the core concept of what technology is in a given genre, world or story. To illustrate with an example: In most modern action and superhero movies, technology is always a weapon . We don't see widely-spread infrastructure, we rarely see plot-related neutral technologies, but we see a lot of new threats coming from tech, be it androids, satellites, laser weapons and other McGuffins. It is usually also an artifact , a prototype, something one-of-a-kind that cannot be replicated, or it will lose its plot relevancy. Wakanda cannot revolutionize African electrical grids with Vibranium the same way Iron Man doesn’t replace oil and coal worldwide. On the other hand, in cyberpunk and dystopian futures
  9. Reboot 2030 - Hacking the Future: Solarpunk Vision for a Sustainable World
    Jul 9, 2024 · original
On the 9th of July 2024 I had a pleasure of giving an interview to Nico Heller from the Democracy School , as a part of his Reboot 2030 project! You can listen to the interview on YouTube and Reboot 2030 Substack as well as Spotify and other podcasting platforms! The project defines itself as: Are we headed irreversibly towards catastrophe or do we have what it takes to fundamentally remake our world in time, sustainably, regeneratively and equitably? If so, who are the people and organisations that drive the transition to a sustainably regenerative negative carbon economy and a better life for all? To shed some light on these questions we have created Reboot2030, a podcast and YouTube channel that engages transformational leaders in ongoing dialogues about their vision and work. This episode's description: In an era of multiple global crises – from the climate emergency, to rising popul
  10. Solarpunk Presents interview - "Tech and the Power of Solarpunk Narratives, with Paweł Ngei"
    May 29, 2024 · original
On the 27th of May 2024 the Solarpunk Presents podcast published an interview with me, available on YouTube , Spotify and Google Podcasts . I would like to thank Christina for the invitation to the podcast and a wonderful conversation! We discussed how the depictions of technology in our culture shape our imaginations of the future, how our treatment of disabled people allows us to see our biases more clearly, what appropriate technology is and how we could start seeing every tech as infrastructure, not artifacts! We also looked at the (often invisible) power structures present when not everybody understands how a technology works. Christina really liked the idea of telling a Solarpunk story through a generational soap opera focusing on a family or a community! If at any point I make little sense, I have to thank my doggo for a very early morning wake-up ;) About the podcast: Solarpunk P
  11. "Games for Future 2: Solarpunk" - a game design lecture at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle
    May 12, 2024 · original
On the 9th of April 2024 I was invited to give a Solarpunk Game Design lecture within the " Games for Future v2: Solarpunk " course for Multimedia | VR-Design (B.A.) & Multimedia Design (M.A.) students of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany. You can find the recording of my lecture on Vimeo (sadly, without the Q&A with the students). Please feel free to check out the project's wiki as well as its pad and zine ! I mostly focused on defining Solarpunk and sustainable futures and analyzing how to present them using emergent gameplay and emergent narratives, allowing players to intuitively and implicitly understand a lot of the issues which could be hard to communicate explicitly. Some of my examples feature the subtle mechanical encouragement to interact with the community in I Was A Teenage Exocolonist and geopolitcally problematic gameplay balancing of Da
  12. The Messiah & The God-Emperor of Zurich: a review of Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Ministry for the Future"
    Mar 20, 2024 · original
As someone deeply interested in Solarpunk and climate fiction in general, I encountered a lot of recommendations of " The Ministry For The Future " by the esteemed science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson (later: KSR). The endorsements came from activists, academics, writers and game designers, programmers and climate entrepreneurs: everyone around me seemed to be impressed with the book. It is said to draw a comprehensive, grim, realistic, and yet still optimistic trajectory of our civilization towards a better, sustainable future past the Climate Catastrophe. The author consulted it with over 40 scientists, activists, and conservationists who made sure that "The Ministry…" presented us with a grounded vision. I started reading it deeply intrigued and hopeful, impressed by the scale and scope of the book, stunned by the rawness of the first chapters. However, as I turned the pages, I

  14. Solarpunk Prompts Podcast

Solarpunk Prompts logo CC-BY-SA 4.0 by Natalia Vish A well overdue introduction to one of the biggest Solarpunk writing podcasts on the English-speaking internet! I've been postponing writing a comprehensive post about this project for well over a year - and suddenly, we are in the middle of the second season! You can listen to the podcast here or on most platforms, like Spotify , Apple , Audible , Google or others! The writeups can be found on Tomasino's wiki . Inside, you can find episodes such as The Tower : A community is freshly moved into a new, wooden, sustainable, climate-controlled tower designed to help them be close to each other and live communally. For some it is a dream come true, for others it is a culture shock, but everyone is struggling with the trauma of losing their old homes to floods, fires and relocation programs. While the adults deal with their emotions, children

  18. Solarpunk: lenses and foundations
    Feb 27, 2023 · original
Round Mirror by Ethan Sees Last year I published a lengthy videoessay on Solarpunk as a part of collaboration with a philosophical YouTube channel "Myśleć Głębiej" ( Think That Through in English). It took me a few months to translate it and update a few sections (especially regarding cyberpunk's romanticism), but I'd like to present you with a written form of my essay - available in audio HERE ! The recorded form follows a deeper exploration of philosophy of the movement, thoroughly discussing the notions of cultural hieroglyphs and squeecore I only briefly mention in the text below: Who am I? My name is Pawel Ngei, on the internet also known as A-L-X-D. I’m a software developer and hacker, someone analysing technology outside of a formal framework of a company or university. I’m especially interested in cultural narratives about technology and engineering, their impacts on societies an

Tytuł i podtytuł "NUDNE SCIENCE FICTION URATUJE ŚWIAT - Wystarczy filmów o Iron Manie vel Elonie Musku.
Zaproponowali mi nagranie wspólnego, wyczerpującego wideoeseju, w którym moglibyśmy poeksplorować wszystkie wątki pominięte przez MistyPopa - i zacząć większą dyskusję o optymistycznej przyszłości w polskiej kulturze!
