  1. Amelia Earhart’s long-lost plane possibly detected by sonar 16,000 feet underwater, exploration team claims
    Jan 31, 2024 · original
Amelia Earhart’s disappearance over the central Pacific Ocean 87 years ago remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history. Countless theories about her fate have emerged in the decades since, but now a deep-sea exploration team searching for the wreckage of her small plane has provided another potential clue — including a new video released Monday. Deep Sea Vision, a Charleston, South Carolina-based team, said this weekend that it had captured a sonar image in the Pacific Ocean that “appears to be Earhart’s Lockheed 10-E Electra” aircraft. The company, which says it scanned over 5,200 square miles of the ocean floor starting in September, posted sonar images on social media that appear to show a plane-shaped object resting at the bottom of the sea. The 16-member team, which used a state-of-the-art underwater drone during the search, also released a new video of the expedition
  2. An Exploration Team Believes They Found Amelia Earhart’s Missing Plane. Here’s Why
    Jan 30, 2024 · original
A n ocean exploration company claims to have found Amelia Earhart’s missing plane— a potential lead in the decades-long mystery over the legendary pilot’s disappearance. A 16-person team led by Deep Sea Vision, a company in South Carolina, used an unmanned, underwater drone to scan more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor between September and December of 2023. Sonar data reviewed in December revealed an image that the company’s founder, Tony Romeo, believes is Earhart’s plane, Lockheed 10-E Electra, that she was flying when she went missing in 1937. The key reason Romeo believes its Earhart ’ s is its unique shape. “Well you’d be hard pressed to convince me that’s anything but an aircraft, for one, and two, that it’s not Amelia’s aircraft,” Romeo, a pilot and a former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, told NBC’s “TODAY” show on Monday. “There’s no other known crashes in the area,
  3. Is this Amelia Earhart’s long-lost plane? Explorer believes he’s solved the great mystery with sonar

“There’s no other known crashes in the area, and certainly not of that era in that kind of design with the tail that you see clearly in the image,” said Tony Romeo, CEO of Deep Sea Vision. A pilot and explorer who embarked on an $11 million expedition at sea believes he has solved one of the world’s greatest mysteries: the final resting place of Amelia Earhart’s plane that vanished in 1937. Tony Romeo, a former Air Force intelligence officer and the CEO of Deep Sea Vision, sold commercial real estate to fund his deep-sea exploration of the Pacific Ocean last year, when he combed the ocean floor with sonar technology in the suspected area of Earhart’s crash. His team reviewed sonar data in December caught by an underwater drone from his research voyage and found a startling image: a blurry, plane-like shape Romeo believes is Earhart’s twin engine Lockheed 10-E Electra. The image was taken

  5. Mystery Deepens Over Bones Linked to Amelia Earhart
    Apr 24, 2017 · original
The partial skeleton of a castaway found in the 1940s on the Pacific island Nikumaroro shows some similarities to Amelia Earhart, scientists say. Though extensive searches have failed to turn up the bones, scientists have found a record of the bones’ measurements taken by a British doctor in 1941, they said. And those measurements match up with Earhart’s build, according to Richard Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), which launched a project to piece together Earhart’s disappearance in 1988. “The match does not, of course , prove that the castaway was Amelia Earhart, but it is a significant new data point that tips the scales further in that direction,” TIGHAR representatives said in a statement . However, forensic anthropologist Ann Ross, who is not involved with the TIGHAR study, said the methodology used by TIGHAR is not re
