  4. Lost Treasures of the Old West
    Nov 2, 2022 · original
The American West is vast, and its treasures elusive. From the first Spanish explorers to cross the plains and deserts, the quest for the West’s rich lodes of silver and gold has been unceasing. And over the centuries, thousands of —stories some more fantastical than others—have surfaced around hidden riches, buried loot, and disappearing mines. Here is a handful of folktales of some of the most popular lost fortunes to have tantalized and eluded seekers for generations. Pirate treasure What could be more traditional than stories of buried pirate treasure? And what pirate more likely a subject than the notorious Jean Lafitte? According to legend, Lafitte buried his swag—some 20 sea chests of treasure formerly belonging to the Emperor Napoleon—in several locations along the coast of Texas and Louisiana. Now and then, a few gold coins come to the surface, serving to keep alive the stories
  5. Cowboy Chronicler
    Nov 1, 2022 · original
Fay E. Ward might just be the most unjustifiably obscure member of the American cowboy pantheon. He was born in 1887 and, in his own words, “worked as a horse wrangler, cowhand, bronc breaker, and roughstring rider for cow outfits in Canada, and for outfits extending from there to the border of Mexico for a period of over forty years.” While that’s not notable in itself—many cowboys of his generation did the same—it served as the foundation for the creation of the greatest cowboy reference book ever published: The Cowboy At Work: All About His Job and How He Does It. A partial explanation for Ward’s obscurity is the lack of biographical information available. What we do know is he was born in Ackley, Iowa, to a family that traveled the rodeo circuit with a Roman riding act. Originally published in 1958, Western author John R. Erickson penned the foreword for the paperback edition of The
  6. Trail Broke | Life on a Cattle Drive
    Oct 26, 2022 · original
In the years following the Civil War, pioneers, freed slaves, and Longhorns flooded Texas. Entrepreneurial cattlemen responded to the demand for beef back East and put herds of free-ranging wild cattle together in South Texas for drives up the trail to railhead markets in Kansas. The youngsters who went up the trail fancied themselves as cowboys of fortune—and much like young soldiers, they left home fresh-faced and brave only to return after one season hardened and wise. Or in cowboy parlance, with “gravel in their gizzard.” Hitting the Trail Charles Samuel Robinson, my great, great-grandfather on my father’s side, was not prone to wanderlust. He was a modest farmer on the country’s frontier—east Texas—but hard times, drought, a sense of duty as a father and his love for his wife led him far away from home. In 1886 and 1887, Robinson forked a horse and trailed herds of cattle from Texas

Stick-thin, clean-shaven, and with soft features, Erwin Smith hardly cut the weather-beaten figure of the West Texas cowboys he so admired. Not that it mattered much. When Smith stood behind the camera, lens focused on the cowpunchers of the American Southwest, the results earned him a national reputation as the photographer of, as the Boston Herald put it in January 1908, “the finest pictures of range life ever taken.” Born August 22, 1886, in a freckle of a town called Honey Grove in North Texas, Erwin moved to nearby Bonham when he was eight years old. Smith grew up in a decadent home, but in the summers, he spent time on his uncle’s ranch farther west. Fascinated by cowboy culture, his jaunts to Foard County offered Smith first-hand experience with the men he once called, writing in his journal, “wandering knights of the plains.” Though captivated by the frontier life, Smith couldn’t
  8. 4 Ways to Age a Horse by His Teeth
    Oct 13, 2022 · original
Illustration by MCKIBILLO If a horse’s date of birth is unknown, take a look at his teeth for clues on how old he is. Aging a horse this way isn’t 100% accurate, but it will give you an approximate age range. The younger a horse is, the more accurate the approximation will be. Here are four characteristics to look for to determine the age of a horse by its teeth. Permanent Teeth Horses have two sets of teeth: temporary teeth called “baby” or “milk” teeth, and permanent teeth. In a 1-year-old horse, all the temporary teeth have erupted. By 3 years old, most horses will have permanent center teeth, both upper and lower. Permanent teeth are larger and darker than baby teeth. By the age of 5, all the baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth and, at this point, the horse has a “full mouth.” Related: Tooth-Care Trends by Horse&Rider Cups On the grinding surface of the permanent incisors, the

  10. Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House | The Oldest Saloon in the Southwest
    Sep 29, 2022 · original
Located seven miles north of Silver City and like most Western mining settlements, Pinos Altos came to be following the discovery of gold in its free-running waters. A post office was erected in 1860, and not many years later, as the Civil War came to an end, the Buckhorn Saloon was established to quench the thirsts of the many-hundred miners who had arrived in the years since. With its 18-inch adobe walls and traditional vigas, the building was constructed with a mind for defense, the town having suffered through the 1861 Battle of Pinos Altos when Cochise joined forces with 400 of Mangas Colorado’s Chiricahuan warriors in an effort to convince the miners the price for gold was too high. Even today, visitors to Pinos Altos can visit the graves of those who died engaged in battle with the Apache. As was the trend in the Anglo’s settlement of the West, settlers continued to arrive, includ
