Sep 8, 2026 · original
Restoration of the American Heritage Museum’s exceptionally rare Junkers Ju 87D-5 Stuka, Werknummer 131587, has reached another major milestone. The aircraft’s vertical and horizontal stabilizers are now nearly complete down to the anodize and manufacturers stamps, while both wings are nearing completion and undergoing careful test-fitting before final assembly. The project continues to distinguish itself through an extraordinary commitment to originality, extending well beyond the aircraft’s outward appearance to the materials, original rivits, fasteners, finishes, and manufacturing methods used by Junkers during World War II. From Wartime Loss to Restoration Werknummer 131587 served with 1./S.G.5 in Finland during 1944, carrying the tactical code Q9+CH. On April 4, 1944, the aircraft was forced to land on a frozen lake after running critically low on fuel. He returned to Iraq in March 2006 and led his Marines on more than 70 combat patrols. In May, he became a tank commander and section leader with the company’s 2nd Platoon. On August 3, 2006, Sgt. On April 14, 2026, the American Heritage Museum was honored to take part in the 110th Anniversary celebration of Escadron de Chasse 2/4 La Fayette, one of the most storied fighter squadrons of the French Air and Space Force. Held at BA 113 Saint-Dizier – Robinson Air Base in France, the ceremony commemorated more than a century of service by a squadron whose origins trace directly to the legendary Lafayette Escadrille of World War I. As part of the anniversary observance, the American Heritage Museum’s recently restored original SPAD S.VII was placed on display in Lafayette Escadrille markings beside a modern Dassault Rafale B currently operated by EC 2/4 La Fayette. The pairing created a powerful visual tribute to 110 years of aviation history, linking the fragile wood-and-fabric fighters of the First World War with one of today’s most advanced combat aircraft. The American Heritage Museum is on the hunt for any detailed technical drawings, documentation, or equipment to support the restoration of our Japanese Type 97 Tankette “Te-Ke” that came to the museum last year. Formerly a part of the Hayes Otoupalik collection in Missoula, MT, the “Te-Ke” was acquired by a donor and delivered to the AHM in January to begin restoration. Unfortunately, since the project lacks a significant part of its upper hull, new steel will need to be fabricated. To make the effort even more challenging, this variant of the “Te-Ke” was used as a gas scattering vehicle to either deploy chemical agents such as mustard gas or other chemical agents offensively or similarly scatter agents to counter poison gasses defensively. Tankettes in this role had a different hull design than a standard Type 97 “Te-Ke” and carried their scattering agents in a towed tracked trailer – a - American Heritage Museum Recognized by National Geographic as One of the World’s Top World War II Museums

Eighty years ago this week, the war in the Pacific was drawing ever closer to the Japanese homeland. The Battle of Okinawa had already resulted in a staggering 35% casualty rate, and estimates for a full-scale invasion of Japan were grim. Early plans for the invasion of Kyushu, known as Operation Olympic , projected 94,250 battle casualties and another 12,600 from disease and accidents—totaling 106,850. Later projections, which included multiple landings, estimated more than 250,000 U.S. casualties . Each of those anticipated casualties would have received a Purple Heart , the U.S. military decoration awarded for wounds or death in combat. In preparation, over 1.5 million Purple Hearts were produced during WWII, with many entering production as invasion estimates came in. With the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, followed by Japan’s announce - Exciting P-47 Thunderbolt Restoration Update – August 2025

The American Heritage Museum has partnered with Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center to show an extraordinary virtual reality experience they created about Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor Fritzie Fritzshall called A Promise Kept . In 1944, during the Second World War, thirteen-year-old Fritzie Fritzshall, her mother, and her two younger brothers were arrested at gunpoint and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center. Separated from her mother and brothers during selection, never to see them again, Fritzie survived for months inside one of the Nazi’s most notorious camps. Each night the women would share with Fritzie a precious crumb of their bread in the hope that the youngest among them might survive to tell the world what had happened to them.
