Born in 2014 and raised in a bilingual household in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Serena Wu is a student at Wayne Elementary whose accomplishments span academics, athletics, and the arts. A member of the school’s gifted program, Serena reads far beyond her grade level, reflecting a lifelong love of books and learning. Her analytical strengths are equally notable: she has earned national mathematics honors through competitions such as Math Kangaroo and the Beestar National Math Competition. She also contributed to her robotics team, the Legendary Dragons, achieving an outstanding score at the FIRST LEGO League Pennsylvania East competition. Between the headlines, the political shouting matches, and whatever crisis just hit your group text, it can feel like everything is shaking all at once. Life will hurt. Loved ones will get diagnosed. Jobs will be lost. And yet—our kids still need breakfast, someone still has to sign the permission slip, and apparently “Mom, we’re out of milk again” is a recurring soundtrack in every household. So how do we mother in the middle of chaos? How do we give our children a sense of peace when our own knees are wobbling? It comes down to three simple “S’s” that set the tone for a home that feels safe, even when the world doesn’t. Safety Kids need to know, deep down in their bones, that home is their safe place. Many times, we’re running on fumes, coasting in neutral down life’s hill, hanging onto a prayer and the wind, just hoping to make it to the next “gas station” where we can refill ourselves. But too often, even when we stop, it’s just enough for 30–40 more miles, enough to get us through another couple of days before we find ourselves running on empty again. So how do we, as mothers, break the cycle of never really taking the time to fill our own tanks? That was the question posed in one of my small groups recently, and it made me pause. Because the truth is, too often, we put everyone else’s oxygen mask on first, forgetting that if we can’t breathe, we can’t help anyone else. I learned this the hard way. Ruby Kim , born on August 27, 2014, in Dallas, Texas, is a bright and ambitious young student. She is the daughter of Sanghee Yun and Dukgun Kim and has two siblings, Richard and Rhea. American Mothers, Inc. is proud to announce the winner of the National 5th Grade Essay Contest—Abhinav Verma of Tazewell, TN. The 10-year-old wrote a short essay (below) on ‘What My Mother Means To Me,’ the prompt from the organization that has been sponsoring this national competition since 2004. In his submission, Verma wrote: “There has never been a time when I was hurt and my mother wasn’t there for me. For my mother, my happiness comes before her own. Although my mom is qualified as a dentist, she chose to stay home just for me. Her daily chores, sleepless nights, and relentless determination in her every act are true reflections of her dedication towards her family.” Verma loves writing and says he wants to become an author.
