- The Insider Prize Winners 2026
Sep 9, 2026 · original
Writing is a challenge, at every level. There are constant pressures acting upon a writer: juggling between responsibilities and work; prioritizing health; making and somehow slowing down time; even, perhaps, the arresting, infinite possibilities of the page. Not to mention, all the subconscious terrain, where one wrestles with memory, vulnerability, and presence. And yet— These five pieces, selected as the winners by novelist and short story writer Elizabeth McCracken for the 2026 Insider Prize, are awe-inspiring depictions of fortitude, honesty, and the power of narrative—all written under the difficult circumstances found within the carceral system. Take, for example, Charles Hill’s winning story, “Prisoner’s Home”: where a protagonist returns after serving a lengthy sentence and struggles to adjust to societal conditions. Hill expresses, in earnest, the fears of being seen in public - MFA for All Fall 2026: Registration Open
Aug 11, 2026 · original
MFA for All was born from our desire to create a space where MFA-quality instruction is widely accessible to writers no matter their age, background, location, or financial situation. MFA for All is not a degree-granting program—it is a community-rich online educational experience led by top-notch faculty, free of the significant hurdles of time, expense, and geography that MFAs demand. These master classes will offer structured insight into your craft and writing practice, giving access to a rarified level of instruction that is usually reserved for students at privileged institutions. Taught by some of the most elite authors of our day, the lectures are designed to be as rewarding for seasoned authors as they are for writers earlier in their careers. Each semester is comprised of three classes taught by three different authors; each class—two linked lectures, a couple weeks apart—will - Story Sessions: Tayari Jones with ZZ Packer

Jul 29, 2026 · original
We’re so pleased to introduce Katie Field, our new outreach coordinator & associate editor, who will be helping us grow our community and expand our public events programming in Austin. Katie first entered our orbit during our Summer Workshop in 2023, and we’ve been lucky to have them as part of the magazine’s family ever since—reading submissions with gusto, selling more ASF T-shirts than anyone thought possible at AWP, and generally bringing their sunny, kind, and gentle energy into every project they work on. We talked to Katie a little about their vision for the new role: What drew you to this position? I participated in ASF ‘s Memorial Day workshop in 2023, which is how I met many of the staff members and joined the magazine as an Assistant Editor. ASF quickly became one of my favorite things about living in Austin (so much so that my partner often remarked, “You’re always in such a - American Short(er) Fiction Prize 2026 Winners
