- America’s Blood Centers Applauds FDA’s Final Buffy Coat Guidance, Reflecting Key Stakeholder Recommendations
Sep 18, 2026 · original
America’s Blood Centers (ABC) commends the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for issuing the Final Guidance , Recommendations for the Development of Blood Collection, Processing, and Storage Systems for the Manufacture of Blood Components Using the Buffy Coat Method. The guidance provides important recommendations for manufacturers seeking FDA approval of blood collection, processing, and storage systems used in the manufacture of blood components through the buffy coat method, and ABC appreciates FDA’s incorporation of recommendations submitted by the association in its 2024 comment letter on the draft guidance. “America’s Blood Centers applauds FDA’s thoughtful consideration of stakeholder feedback and its commitment to developing a practical, science-based framework for the use of the buffy coat method for platelet production in the United States,” said Kate Fry, Chief Executive Offi - President Approves Stopgap Funding Measure, Averting Shutdown of FDA and HHS Operations

On September 2, 2026, the President signed H.R. 6500 , the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027 , into law. This continuing resolution (CR) funds the federal government, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), at their current levels through December 11, 2026, avoiding a shutdown on October 1, the start of the fiscal year. With the CR, both the FDA and HHS will remain fully operational until December 11 th , when either a budget or another CR would need to be passed. The stopgap buys time, but not certainty. To date, only three of the twelve annual appropriations bills have passed the House of Representatives, and none have passed the Senate. Neither chamber is expected to be in session until, at the earliest, after the midterm elections (November 3, 2026), during the lame-duck session. The “lame-duck” session is t - Statement from America’s Blood Centers on the Appointment of Karim Mikhail as Director of CBER

America’s Blood Centers (ABC) congratulates Karim Mikhail, B. Pharm, MSc, on his appointment to the role of Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER). After serving as acting director, Mr. Mikhail’s permanent appointment provides important stability for CBER and for the nation’s blood and biotherapeutics communities. His leadership will help to advance innovation while fostering a collaborative regulatory environment that ensures the continued safety and availability of the nation’s blood supply. “America’s Blood Centers congratulates Karim Mikhail on his appointment as Director of CBER,” said Kate Fry, ABC’s Chief Executive Officer. “His leadership will help to continue the collaborative partnership between FDA, ABC, and community blood centers, advancing innovation while supporting a regulatory environment that ensures a safe and available blood supply. - Does a Liberal Transfusion Strategy Reduce Unfavorable Neurological Outcomes? TRAIN Trial Results Analyzed in JAMA
Sep 9, 2026 · original
Key Takeaways This secondary analysis in JAMA Network Open of the TRAIN Trial Results examined the effects of liberal transfusion (Hb threshold of 9 g/dL) versus restrictive transfusion (Hb threshold of 7 g/dL) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The liberal strategy showed an absolute 9 percent lower risk of unfavorable neurological outcomes at 180 days compared to the restrictive strategy, despite similar 28-day mortality rates. The findings align with previous studies suggesting better neurological outcomes with liberal transfusion strategies in TBI patients. Purpose of the TRAIN Trial Analysis A secondary analysis published in JAMA Network Open , “evaluated the effects of different hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds for guiding red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) on the neurological outcome among patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) included in the TRAIN tri - How Blood Centers Can Support the TRICARE Demonstration Project Health

Beginning on January 1, 2027, the Defense Health Agency will launch a 5-year pilot program ( TRICARE PHBT Demonstration ) that provides a separate add-on payment for the cost of blood products and the professional services involved in administering them when medically necessary pre-hospital blood transfusion (PHBT) is provided to eligible TRICARE beneficiaries during ALS2, Specialty Care Transport, or air ambulance transport. Aug 25, 2026 · original
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes Key Takeaways A study in JAMA Internal Medicine investigates the link between Transfusion-Related Alpha-Gal Syndrome (TRAGS) and allergic transfusion reactions (ATRs). Researchers found higher ATR rates in regions with a high prevalence of Alpha-gal syndrome among blood type O patients receiving B or AB platelets or plasma. The study analyzed 558,823 transfusions and established that ATRs occurred in 0.3 percent of cases, with significant risks associated with B and AB blood types in AGS-high areas. Authors suggest hospitals consider practice changes to mitigate risk and further investigate TRAGS mechanisms and allergic reactions. The findings prompt calls for more studies to confirm the association between AGS and ATRs, especially in high-prevalence regions. A paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine reported on the findings regarding Transfusion-Relat - Are Cold-stored Platelets Inferior to Room-temperature?
Aug 18, 2026 · original
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes Key Takeaways The Chilled Platelet Study (CHIPS) tested if cold-stored platelets could outperform standard room-temperature platelets in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Researchers in JAMA found that cold-stored platelets (CSPs) were noninferior to room-temperature platelets (RTPs) for up to 21 days with over 99.9 percent confidence. The study involved 989 patients and noted no significant differences in adverse events, though increased re-exploration rates occurred in the CSP group. CSPs offer a solution for platelet shortages and may enhance availability since they can be stored longer than RTPs. An accompanying editorial emphasizes the potential revolution in platelet usage, calling for further trials in different medical contexts. Purpose of the Chilled Platelet Study (CHIPS) Researchers have published the results of the Chilled Platelet Study ( - America’s Blood Centers Connects with State Leaders at the 2026 NCSL Legislative Summit
Aug 12, 2026 · original
During the last week of July, America’s Blood Centers participated in the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit in Chicago, Illinois. As the foremost annual gathering of state lawmakers and staff from across the country, the Summit offers a unique opportunity to engage with policymakers from both sides of the aisle. NCSL is a nonpartisan organization that provides legislators with policy research, training, and technical assistance tailored to their needs. ABC’s presence at the Summit allowed us to connect directly with legislators and staffers from a wide range of states. Eight ABC member blood centers – Blood Assurance, The Community Blood Center (Appleton), ImpactLife, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, Mississippi Blood Services, Rock River Valley Blood Center, Versiti, and Vitalant – joined ABC at the booth. Key Takeaways The AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism urges blood donations to address a concerning drop in the U.S. blood supply. Blood centers face shortages, risking availability for patients in need, particularly in certain regions. Eligible individuals should schedule blood donation appointments soon to help rebuild the blood supply. The appeal follows previous statements from ABC, AABB, and the American Red Cross about the urgent need for donations. The Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism, which America’s Blood Centers (ABC) is a part of, has published a July 24 th statement explaining that blood donations are currently needed to reverse a downward trend. Specifically, the statement noted that, “[f]ollowing weeks of declines in blood dona - DoD Launches TRICARE Demonstration to Reimburse Blood in Ambulances Following ABC Advocacy
Jul 17, 2026 · original
Washington, D.C. — In a major win for patient access and America’s Blood Centers (ABC) advocacy, the Department of Defense (DoD) recently announced a new TRICARE demonstration project that will separately reimburse ambulance providers for blood products administered during emergency transport. Prehospital blood transfusions (PHBT) save lives, yet only 1–2% of EMS agencies nationwide carry blood, largely because current payment policy does not cover the cost. Earlier this year, CMS finalized a rule folding PHBT into the existing Advanced Life Support, Level 2 (ALS2) ambulance rate rather than reimbursing it separately. ABC and partners argued this bundled approach does not come close to covering actual blood product costs, which can run $500–$925 or more per unit. This advocacy is cited directly in DoD’s rationale for this demonstration. The demonstration launches January 1, 2027, and run
