- America’s National Parks Grant Helps Boston NHP Celebrate 250 Years
Sep 15, 2026 · original
Just ahead of America’s 250th anniversary, Boston National Historical Park commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 2025. A $25,000 grant from America’s National Parks supported several key elements of the anniversary programming. To open the commemorative period, the park partnered with Bunker Hill Community College and the British Consulate General Boston to host a panel discussion featuring prominent historians. Eastern National funding supported the participation of panelist Nathaniel Philbrick and moderator Dr. Brooke Barbier. Approximately 400 people attended the discussion, and its reach continues to grow through an online recording . In recognition of the ideals championed in 1775, the park partnered with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to welcome 250 new citizens during a naturalization ceremony at Bunker Hill. Petersburg National Battlefield allocated $10,441 in America’s National Parks Funds at Work to support public programs, special events, trail maps, signage, and educational supplies. Replica soldier uniforms and black powder for historic weapons demonstrations helped bring the park’s history to life. The funding supported 43 special programs that engaged more than 1,600 visitors. New signage and trail maps also helped guide and inform the park’s more than 10,000 annual visitors, particularly during special events. As the nation honors America’s 250 th anniversary, these programs invite visitors to explore a defining chapter in the American story. The struggle at Petersburg, whose outcome helped bring the Civil War to a close, offers a powerful lens into the nation’s founding ideals, the fight to preserve the Union, and the continuing effort to extend the promise of liberty to all America - Supporting Civil War Mobile Exhibit at Maggie L. Staff at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and Richmond National Battlefield Park allocated $10,050 in America’s National Parks Funds at Work to create an interactive, adaptable educational exhibit inside a mobile National Park Service trailer. Featured at five major park events throughout the year, the traveling exhibit gave visitors a hands-on way to explore Civil War history. Developed in partnership with Petersburg National Battlefield, the exhibit highlighted Richmond’s role as the capital and industrial center of the Confederacy and Petersburg’s vital role as its railroad and supply lifeline. Together, their stories provide a powerful historical bridge between the founding ideals commemorated during America’s 250th anniversary and the nation’s struggle to preserve the Union.
