  1. Farm girl meets the Internet
    Oct 15, 2025 · original
I have a lot of history with Advokate and without Kate’s help, I don’t know that I ever would have had my Etsy shop or gotten around to so many art events. She’s always been an inspiration and help for me. I couldn’t have done it without her. I knew nothing when we sold out our farm. I did book work on the computer but never did emails or anything on the farm. I came to her and said, “Now I have to learn this!” I was used to doing cow and calf records and keeping track of pedigrees and herd health work, but to be able to describe and put up my art for sale was completely a new thing. I had gone to mnny art shows way back before the farm but once I was at the farm, I didn’t get to attend many shows and rarely found time to do any artwork. Here is the About section of my Etsy shop which I wrote when I launched it back in 2011 after attending an Etsy workshop with Kate. The text I wrote for
  2. Spring is euphoria to me (but then there are mosquitoes!)
    May 7, 2025 · original
It’s been so gloomy and rainy but with beautiful moments of sun. So when I got dressed this morning to come in and see Kate at Advokate, I put on my bright contrasting colors over one of my batik tank tops to show that I still have a colorful spirit inside, even though it’s buried under my usual green/gray/brown ensembles as I go out to care for my two horses. The horses still haven’t finished shedding and have been rolling in mud and when I get a dry moment I get out and curry them and their coats brighten significantly after that. Star loves to roll in the mud and when she can find a dry patch of grass she can actually rub more of her coat off and she can look quite shiny. I did get her brushed and sprayed to try and protect her from flies and ticks, as well as Molly. But Molly has white on her and the mud shows up quite a lot when she rolls in the mud! We had a great walk in the woods
  3. Welcome, Molly!
    May 23, 2024 · original
Look who will soon be joining us here at the homestead. This is Molly, a well seasoned Tennessee Walking horse, not participating in shows but has seen many many happy trails… Star has been lonely since Vanilla’s passing and I know she will enjoy the company as time goes by and the newness and jealousy wears off… And just imagine, the girl who had the little brown cows with a big black and white horse! She is expected soon before the end of May. The post Welcome, Molly! appeared first on Amity Farm Batik .
  4. My meeting with Foxy, the giant horse
    May 18, 2024 · original
This is one of my favorite photos of myself with the great Foxy. Pamela Rickenbach brought these magnificent horses to a Bedlam Farm Open House and I got to hear amazing tales from Pamela about the history of horses throughout the ages and the incredible energy fields that especially these giant draft horses project. I look like a leprechaun. The post My meeting with Foxy, the giant horse appeared first on Amity Farm Batik .
  5. I am a caregiver
    May 14, 2024 · original
From early on I have been a caregiver. At first for mostly animals. My horses and then the farm with 70 milkers and at least 50 youngstock to care for. We were treated with the delights and disappointments of birth and of course dealing with death. Both needing lots of care and attention and requiring both Dick and myself to be up at all hours and to work in the weather extremes, winter sub zero with snow, ice and wind and blazing hot sun with a steamy barn. I did better in winter. There was an order to our chores and it became a daily ritual caring for the farm. Checking the cows before milking As time went on my husband Dick suffered from bad knees and it became harder for him to do the things he used to do. Eventually he had a knee replacement and required lots of extra care. Thankfully he had less pain, but still limited abilities and he stood high on the replaced side but low on the
  6. Finding another lost soul
    May 7, 2024 · original
I have learned in yoga that some difficult people and animals can become your teachers, and Shadow certainly has. Shadow arrived to my driveway as a young female, very thin with a big belly. Of course I fed her near the cellar door and then inside…where she had kittens… Many were stillborn and only one survived after she took them away and returned with just two. She could eat what three cats ate and I gave her all she could eat. She was accepted pretty well by Pretty Paws Grey and Champion. After 6 months I looked at her and she was fat! She got very heavy (18.5lbs) and is now around 14 pounds, it is hard to appreciate the loss under all that hair.. She has been like a dog some days accompanying me to the shed to feed and care for Star and Vanilla as well as back when I had SteppinUp my old best cow… The post Finding another lost soul appeared first on Amity Farm Batik .
  7. Setting things in place as I prepare to move on.
    Feb 27, 2024 · original
Vanilla thinking of mischief Good thoughts from my friend Kris Faded and falling flowers Vanilla’s blanket, washed and cleaned It has been almost a month since Vanilla passed and very slowly I am putting in place those parts of his life that he left behind. His old colorful blanket we all enjoyed is all washed and ready to pack and put away. Flowers that my friend Kris Moss sent to honor his memory have faded and fallen but are not forgotten. I often wonder why it seems so hard to part with animals. As it is with humans, but in the case of the animal, I have felt more responsibility in caring for them and bringing them to a peaceful end to their long and (I believe) happy lives. When Vanilla first came to me as a simple llama who was close to nine years old at the time, he was quite an aggressive fellow, but used to living with horses where he was not really the boss. When he arrived at
  8. Where the pastures are always green and the temps are perfect
    Feb 16, 2024 · original
When I first saw Vanilla , he came right over and gave me a kiss! There were not that many kisses later, but I did get a few. He must have known he would get a good home. My neighbors the Goodspeeds had horses and two llamas. Both Dick and I loved to stop and see them. As I walked to the fence one day the llama I came to call Vanilla, or often Feller walked right over and kissed me. This is the llama for me I thought. Not a long time after that Kevin Goodspeed knew he had to part with some of his horses and the two llamas he had. I was game for the llamas but especially Vanilla. I had my good cow Steppin at that time. Vanilla had been in with horses at the Goodspeeds and they were bigger and had the power but at here at my place he was king. There was another Llama too who was bigger and much older than Vanilla at the time. He was Chocolate. Both Llamas were males and not gelded. We all
  9. Be Kind to Humans Day
    Nov 17, 2023 · original
Be kind to humans day, I told Vanilla. As I started to put on his winter coat and neck wrap. It was 16 yesterday morning and snowed later on. Vanilla had been doing well this fall, but he did get chilled. He always feels warmer after he has his blanket but just does not like being helped to get dressed. What guy is not like this? Star takes winter so well until way below zero and windy when she tolerates a blanket for the super cold days and then bites at It till I remove it. Vanilla really hates when I attach the leg straps but without them the blanket twists hard to one side. Once it was on he acted as if nothing happened and stepped out of his shed to eat and then off to investigate his pasture. He looks decorated for the holidays. 10. We got away once
    Dec 21, 2022 · original
I guess it is normal for us to look back on our lives as we grow older. There were no cell phones to conveniently carry and take photos with so there are not many photos and what I have are faded and somewhat dirty. I still love to look at them. Dick and I were together everyday of our lives except for his month long trip to Moldova to work with the pastures and the cows in this small backward country who had separated from Russia. Much later Dick developed many health problems he is now in a nearby home. I see him everyday. The farm took both of us into the daily ritual of getting up early and tending to our animals to be sure they were healthy and happy. Happy cows do best. We even installed soft mats in their stalls to bring more comfort and good footing to them. I remember the day they were installed. They lay down and their eyes softened and showed appreciation for their new found b
