- Seremos

On the three versions of my about page, I’m running an experiment with dithering images using Bayer 8×8. I had an LLM make a tiny custom plugin for WordPress and the size results are below: Language Dithering Colors Size Original Full 428 KB English Bayer 8×8 4 263 KB Spanish Bayer 8×8 3 146 KB Galician Bayer 8×8 2 176 KB It’s not completely fair. The original image is a .jpg at 1600×1200 pixels and the dithered versions are .png files downscaled to 1200×900. I might try making them .webp files. The colors are black #222222, gray #999999, yellow #F4E28A, and white #FFFFFF. I’m not sure which one I’ll stick with and if I’ll opt to dither all images going forward or not. Adding gray allows more facial details in the first photo from Colca Canyon in Peru. The pure black and white feels like a DIY zine. I’ve treated this page as an Instagram alternative to share some of my photos. But I’d ho - Wikireading 2025

From Wikipedia’s personalized Year in Review for me: You spent 22,629 minutes reading 12,427 articles in 2025. We estimate that puts you in the top 5% of Wikipedia readers globally. The average person reads 335 articles a year. Yeah, I’m a fan. But my plan for next year is more emphasis on books and my to-be-read stack (actually six, which I’ll write about some other time, maybe). - Ponte de Lima Roman Milestone

The two-week heat wave brought extreme fire risk to Galicia and now Ourense province is on fire. 10% of it, 727 square kilometers, has already burned. The fires of Chandrexa and Maceda merged and is now the biggest fire ever on record. Neighbors are organizing volunteer groups via WhatsApp and some villages are left alone to battle the flames, without any firefighters. Many are feeling useless given the situation. - Hot Dog

Alqo’s ola de calor ritual. We try to walk further in the mornings before the pavement heats up, but I make a point to pass this spot where he can get in to the river. Since my van is in the shop, we’ve exploring the places just outside of town but still reachable on foot. It’s nice how close the campo can feel here. - Faro Bregancio

While I’ve really enjoyed the human, social aspect of my job, talking with podcasters all day, the web development itch returned a few weeks ago. I eventually want to learn more HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (and TypeScript) to migrate this blog over to something like Lume , but I think it’s still beneficial for me to understand WordPress in a more technical way. This site’s theme is pretty old , but I love the typography and simplicity. I’ve been tinkering with a child theme and re-added the Aside post type and styled it a bit differently than normal posts. Can you tell I like the notecard and highlighter vibe? I want to try some mini-projects with Seriously Simple Podcasting or Advanced (or Secure?) Custom Fields too. - O Único Galego Mal Falado

“…é o que non se fala”. Happy Galician Literature Day, Galicia and all the galegophiles. You’ve given me another lifelong project in learning, studying, and speaking. You’ve also shown me how a language can hold the culture, history, identity, and soul of a place. I don’t feel that same connection to my language, English, which dominates much of the world. I vicariously bask in your commitment, both personal and collective, to keeping it alive. And I try to remind myself, when I’m embarrassed that I might accidentally mix Spanish when trying to speak Galician, that “the only badly spoken Galician is the one that isn’t spoken” . “A tódolos galegos que nos transmitiron o herdo da lingua, ós que non renuncian a ela e confían e loitan polo seu futuro. Os que foron e van arrequentando agarimosamente este ben co seu maxín, a súa intelixencia e o seu traballo.” — Dedication of Gramática galega - Not Welcome

Seeing the storks return brings me a quiet joy. Besides being a link to Galicia and Upper Guinea, two places close to my heart, I love them for their grace. I enjoy the way they perch and build their massive nests on poles next to the railway and on old stone churches. The town has a few pieces of street art with storks. - Farewell to the Scroll, Grateful for the Light

With my goal of prefiguring some changes in this new year of 2025, a few weeks ago I removed Instagram from my phone. It’s been a long time coming; I found myself glued to the screen for a few reasons: keeping up with the unbearable horrors in Gaza, maintaining the vaguest awareness of what some friends who I’m not in regular contact are up to, and using it to escape the Now. Attention and the present moment have finally been hoisted up onto my altar of divinity. And because I have very little self-control, I needed to actually remove the shiny button that gets me there. I haven’t deleted my account yet; it’s enough to use the browser to check messages once every few days. I’ll maybe get around to writing about that a little more. Today I thought I’d share the accounts of two people that resonated with last year: Aleah Black (@gendersauce) In their words : What is asked of us in this age - Edge of a Long Twilight

This Californian still struggles with winter. Instead of going inward, pressing pause on the outside world, and enjoying the slowness of things, I’ve found myself dealing with big things over the last few years; a breakup, a new town and melancholy, existential dread while watching the warmongering, immigration bureaucracy, etc. This year isn’t any different, other than gaining some awareness that I can choose something different. I can go inside, allow myself to not immediately respond to that favor request from the other, wait an extra week to turn in that paper (it’s Christmas time in Spain after all, where everything is slowing down). The temperatures drop to 0º and I gave myself permission to delete instagram, re-start mantra meditation, unsubscribe to the podcasts with their cháchara , journal more, turn the heater up a little more, and be kinder to my self.
