Measuring road safety in America’s metros: See how your region fares on five key factors, and levers for improvement Improving roadway safety is an urgent priority. Crashes resulting in an injury or fatality reached 2.4 million in the U.S. in 2023. For those outside the vehicle, the dangers are even more stark. Pedestrian fatalities have been steadily rising since 2009. As MPOs work to improve road safety, it is essential to understand how usage contributes to crashes. This includes how much people drive; how fast vehicles go; and the prevalence of trucks. To uncover these risks, StreetLight’s data scientists measured five usage metrics in the 100 most populated metros to create the U.S. Safe Streets Index . The BASICS Act was introduced by Representative Rob Bresnahan and Representative McDonald-Rivet . The bill updates federal surface transportation programs to better align with how transportation networks actually function, with a focus on safety, accountability, and investments in the roads and bridges most used by communities and businesses. Each year, we lose approximately 40,000 lives to crashes, along with millions of injuries, and hundreds of billions of dollars in economic and societal costs. Despite decades of policy interventions, we significantly lag peer countries in roadway safety. AMPO Survey Report: Unobligated Balances & Project Timeline

AMPO recently distributed a survey to membership between May 24 and July 31, 2023 focused on unobligated balances and carry over policies. Several factors prompted this survey, including the 2023 August Redistribution efforts, an accounting issue between Delphi and FMIS within FHWA leading to delays in obligating funds, and the rising unobligated balances seen nationwide. The purpose of this survey was to better understand the barriers Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and local partners face in obligating federal funds, while providing a national snapshot of the state of the practice.
