Aug 27, 2025 · original
Why Puppy Evaluation Matters Evaluating a Rottweiler litter is one of the most important responsibilities of a breeder. Done properly, it ensures you place puppies in the right homes, preserve breed quality, and maintain the balance, strength, and temperament the breed is known for. The American Rottweiler Club (ARC) recommends evaluation around 7–8 weeks of age . At this stage, puppies show their natural proportions before growth spurts distort their balance. When to Evaluate Rottweiler Puppies 3–5 Weeks – Temperament Watching Observe confidence, curiosity, and social interaction. Note which pups are bold, pushy, or more reserved. That’s fine for parents of human babies, but what about those of canine babies who worry their little yapper may be an underachiever? How do you produce the next canine Einstein? Stimulating Ideas Educational toys may help, but so far, nobody’s demonstrated that a toy that teaches your puppy to tie his shoe is any better than an empty plastic bottle. Besides, most puppies are quite adept at untying your shoe while it’s on your foot and you’re attempting to walk, even without fancy educational toys. But it’s the fact that puppies have access to bottles and shoes and anything they can mouth and chase that makes the difference. Like babies, puppies thrive in stimulating, complex environments. Early Spay-Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete By Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP Courtesy of Canine Sports Productions When it comes to raising healthy canine athletes, one of the most debated topics is when to spay or neuter . While early sterilization is often promoted as a way to prevent pet overpopulation, research shows that the timing of these procedures can have lasting impacts on a dog’s orthopedic development, cancer risk, behavior, and overall health . This is a dog that normally is very alert and responsive to his surrounding and the people in it. Your attitude and stance are important to the dog’s acceptance of you a stranger, invading his area. Approach him in a deliberate, confident and friendly manner. When first approaching, (slightly at an angle, from the front) to assess head type and expression, do not at the dog, directly in the eyes, as this can be perceived as a challenge to the dog. You can assess ear set, eyes, head proportions without staring. Ask the handler to show the dentition (with understanding that there are 42 teeth, and one missing is a serious fault, and two missing is a disqualification).
