- New US National Montessori Curriculum Announced
Sep 28, 2026 · original
The Montessori Public Policy Initiative (MPPI), in collaboration with the American Montessori Society (AMS) , Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), and Association Montessori International of the United States (AMI/USA), is pleased to announce the US National Montessori Curriculum . This resource will be the only comprehensive and detailed articulation of the US Montessori educational system from birth through age 6. Developed through a multi-year collaboration among Montessori educators, researchers, pedagogical leaders, and subject-matter experts, the curriculum provides a shared articulation of Montessori philosophy, principles, curriculum, and practices and supports greater clarity and understanding among educators, schools, policymakers, researchers, universities, and families. The first phase will be released in late 2026 as an open-access resource. Sep 22, 2026 · original
With summer vacation behind us and the new school year underway, the autumn holidays are right around the corner. Just as families have diverse traditions around celebrating holidays, Montessori schools, too, take a variety of approaches to observing Halloween and Thanksgiving. While many Montessori schools reject the rampant consumerism associated with these holidays, some do have their students participate in traditional activities like a costume parade on Halloween, for example, or a class or school Thanksgiving feast. While most children enjoy these activities, and they may include skills such as planning and organizing, they do not necessarily or always align with some elements of Montessori philosophy. Last fall, we offered suggestions for celebrating Thanksgiving with children by giving back to the community, keeping our history lessons factually accurate and culturally respectful - Call for New Community Engagement and Action Committee Members

Before I had much chance to settle into my Sunday morning, the emails, texts, and social media messages started arriving. Friends, family, Montessori educators, and colleagues wanted to make sure I saw the newest story about Montessori. When a school puts Montessori on its building, families reasonably assume that the word means something. They assume there are standards behind it. They assume the educators have been appropriately prepared. They assume a shared understanding of what Montessori education is and what it is not. But what stands behind the Montessori name? What Is Montessori? At the center of Montessori education is a deeply prepared adult. An adult who understands human development, knows how to observe, understands the materials and their progression, prepares an environment intentionally, and develops the discipline of knowing when to intervene and when to step aside. Yvette Zapata, M. ED, AMS EI Montessori Training Coordinator Shelton Montessori Training Working with children has always been a passion of mine. The question was how best to set them up for success. My Montessori journey feels a bit like the Goldilocks story; I was simply searching for the developmental level that was just right for me. I began at a school right next to the apartment my husband and I were living in as we prepared for our firstborn. When I entered this Montessori school, I was suddenly awestruck by how these young toddlers worked independently and could do things for themselves at such a young age. Thus, I started my journey in the toddler room and learned all I could about Montessori philosophy and pedagogy. From that stage, I quickly moved into the primary classroom as I realized I wanted a greater academic challenge. This was a good fit until I realized there was so m - A Montessori Journey: From Parent to Educator

Hema Jagada I AMS-EC Montessori Coordinator Shelton School & Evaluation Center When I was looking for a school for my son, I had merely heard of Montessori, and I was not prepared for the life-altering impact of a philosophy that so closely aligned with my core beliefs. As I learned more, I knew this was a place where I wanted to belong. The schedule also offered the balance my family needed, so I left corporate finance and began my AMS Montessori Early Childhood training while expecting my second child. My inspiration was truly ignited during that training. Learning about Maria Montessori’s deep reverence for the natural development of the child, I felt an immediate, profound connection to her wisdom. When my instructors spoke about peace as the ultimate goal, I realized Montessori was not simply a different way of teaching—it was part of a much larger mission.
