  1. Blayney Mine’s Future Hinges on Heritage Compliance Amid Controversy
    Jan 28, 2025 · original
The Albanese government is under scrutiny for failing to conduct on-site investigations before halting a proposed million-dollar goldmine in Blayney, New South Wales. The decision, influenced by an Indigenous activist group’s last-minute claims, has sparked debate over procedural integrity and heritage preservation. The McPhillamys mine, spearheaded by Regis Resources, now faces a critical redesign phase to align with Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek’s directive to protect the cultural heritage of the region. The company anticipates clarity on the project’s future by mid-year. Government Oversight Questioned A Senate inquiry revealed that the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW) did not dispatch staff to the site during the heritage inspection process, citing resource constraints. This omission occurred despite the rejection of recommendations fro
  2. BlueScope Shifts Green Iron Pilot Plant to WA After $75m Support Package
    Dec 17, 2024 · original
BlueScope Steel has chosen Western Australia over New South Wales for its major green iron pilot plant after WA offered a $75 million assistance package. The decision underscores the state’s advantage as an iron ore hub and highlights its appeal to industry partners aiming to accelerate decarbonisation in steelmaking. WA Gains Green Iron Investment Australia’s largest steelmaker, BlueScope, alongside Rio Tinto and BHP, settled on a site near BHP’s decommissioned Kwinana nickel refinery. The decision comes after discussions with multiple states, including NSW and South Australia, ultimately favouring WA due to its proximity to major iron ore operations and government incentives. Woodside Energy joined the project to supply gas and potentially hydrogen for the pilot plant’s electric smelting furnace (ESF), crucial for low-carbon steel production. The investment is expected to inject hundre

  4. EQ Resources Gains Funding for Tungsten Redevelopment at Wolfram Camp
    Oct 16, 2024 · original
EQ Resources (EQR) has secured $250,000 from Queensland’s METS (mining equipment, technology, and services) collaborative project fund, intended to trial innovative X-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorting technology. The project focuses on the potential redevelopment of Wolfram Camp, a historic tungsten mine in Queensland, and aligns with the state’s critical minerals strategy . Advanced Ore Sorting Technology for Future Development With this funding, EQR will trial advanced XRT ore sorting technology to determine the feasibility of redeveloping Wolfram Camp. The site is located approximately 100 km southwest of EQR’s Mt Carbine tungsten mine. Tomra Sorting, known for its advanced ore sorting solutions, will supply the equipment. Their expertise from projects like the Barruecopardo mine in Spain and Mt Carbine mine in Queensland will be invaluable. The University of Queensland’s Sustainable
  5. Activists Aim to Block Olympic Dam-sized Mine in South Australia
    Sep 4, 2024 · original
Controversy erupts over a potential halt to a significant mining project in Lake Torrens. Australia’s Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek faces mounting pressure over a new Indigenous heritage protection issue that could disrupt major resource projects. A recent report has recommended that she issue a protection order for areas of South Australia’s Lake Torrens, potentially halting a mining project that could rival BHP’s Olympic Dam, one of the world’s largest mining operations. The recommendation marks the latest use of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984, a law invoked earlier by Ms. Plibersek to stop Regis Resources’ $1 billion McPhillamys Gold Project in New South Wales, which led to significant backlash from the mining sector. Lake Torrens Mining Halt Recommended In 2021, two members of the Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation submitted a Section 10 app
  6. Authority approves reopening Far North Qld mines
    Jun 20, 2024 · original
A mining company has received the green light to resume mineral production in the Atherton Tableland and Mareeba Shire regions. The State Department of Resources recently approved exploration permits for minerals at EQ Resources’ Wolfram Camp (133km west of Cairns) and Bamford Hill (143km southwest of Cairns) mines. Although Wolfram was abandoned in 2018 the wolframite operation can be reopened for drilling, geological mapping, soil and rock sampling plus other on-ground exploration work across a 480 sq km area. The decision came in response to a jump in global demand for solar cells, wind turbine blades, batteries, microelectronics, tools, construction, defence and medical technologies. “As we did with the Mount Carbine mine we are committed to engaging closely with all local communities around Wolfram Camp to create shared prosperity and opportunities. This includes generating new empl
  7. Industry approves up to $140B transition away from coal
    Jun 20, 2024 · original
A group of major mineral producers have supported replacing fossil fuels with zero-emissions alternatives. Industry bodies representing the nation’s largest resources companies recently endorsed the federal opposition’s plan to replace coal-fired power plants with nuclear technology. The proposal involves nationalising then converting closing power stations to accept 470 megawatt or larger capacity modular reactor at the following locations: Callide, 115km southwest of Gladstone Tarong, 200km west of the Sunshine Coast Liddell, 110km northwest of Newcastle Mount Piper, 161km northwest of Sydney Loy Yang, 167km east of Melbourne Northern, 310km north of Adelaide Muja, 208km south of Perth. Existing power lines will be used instead of constructing 28,000km of new poles and wires. Cooling water capacity will also be required. Locals will be employed at the new site for the next century. “Th
  8. Authorities deploy sniper to handle protestors at operation
    Jun 19, 2024 · original
A highly trained shooter was ordered to neutralise demonstrators who stepped out of line at a foreign-owned mine site. Authorities recently organised a helicopter and sniper to take down protestors who interfered with Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia. A full police presence was also deployed to support aerial surveillance efforts as Li inspected the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) controlled Kwinana processing plant. No environmental activists were reported at the site. Only pro-Beijing supporters unfurled Australian and Chinese flags nearby and about 10 Falun Dafa meditation adherents separately held banners, appealing for an end to the CCP’s illegal organ harvesting against fellow “truthful, compassionate and tolerant” compatriots back in Mainland China. The premier also visited Fortescue Metal Group’s Hazelmere facility where he held talks with foundin
  9. ‘Idiot’ environmental protestors must stop blocking projects, jobs says report
    Jun 18, 2024 · original
New resources developments should freely create employment opportunities, Northern Australia representatives said. Many First Nations people would rather benefit from major projects instead of missing out due to eco friendly demonstrators. This is the conclusion one group reached after consulting with Indigenous Australians across the Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and other regions. “It is time for our people to be recognised or identified as people to engage with in a culturally appropriate manner and have space to have a say without interruption from non-Indigenous idiots,” Top End Aboriginal Coastal Alliance chair Julius Kernan said according to the Australian Associated Press. “We want them to fill the roles our people have been missing out on.” The remarks came after Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price questioned the adverse impacts of anti-fossil fuel activists interrupting projects that
  10. Authority could protect Qld mine workers’ ‘irrelevant’ medical records, right to not be a ‘punching bag’
    Jun 17, 2024 · original
Queensland resources employees may soon enjoy greater privacy and safety at work. State Parliament recently proposed new rules that remove the requirement for crew members to disclose “irrelevant” medical records. This means jobseekers might not be forced to disclose their whole personal medical history when applying for roles, especially when it has nothing to do with the job. “[The Respect at Work and Other Matters Amendment Bill is] reversing a widespread practice among industries such as mining … where workers are required to disclose personal medical records to secure a job interview, regardless of their relevance for the job at hand,” Queensland Council of Unions general secretary Jacqueline King said in a public statement. The Bill also protects every worker’s right to feel “safe, valued and supported” from being repeatedly abused on mine sites due to gender, race, age, impairment
