Jul 15, 2026 · original
The Institute for Anarchist Studies is thrilled to announce the projects awarded with an Anarchist Horizons grant during our 2026 grant cycle. A Cage Is a Cage by Mica Fares and Josh Davidson This grant is supporting the illustration and promotion of A Cage Is a Cage , a children’s book about prison abolition. All royalties from the book will go to the Rosenberg Fund for Children, which supports the educational and emotional needs of children whose parents have faced repression because of their progressive activism. A Cage Is a Cage is being illustrated by Mica Fares, an anarchist, organizer, and artist, and was written by Josh Davidson, an anarchist, abolitionist, member of the Certain Days: Freedom for Political Prisoners calendar collective, part of the Children’s Art Project with political prisoner Oso Blanco, and editor of two books Rattling the Cages and A Clean Hell , both with fo - Applications Now Closed for the 2025-2026 Grant Cycle

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS, 2025-2026 Anarchist Horizons Grant and Jen Angel Anarchist Media Grant Grants for Writers, Artists, Organizers, and Mediamakers About the Grants For nearly thirty years, the IAS has funded creative intellectual work that furthers anarchist ideas and makes them accessible to a broad audience. Since 2023, we’ve collaborated with Agency to offer two grant programs: the Anarchist Horizons Grant and the Jen Angel Anarchist Media Grant. The Anarchist Horizons grant program supports a variety of radical projects, including written works, translations, artwork, performance, workshops, and events. The Jen Angel Anarchist Media grant program, named in honor of the late anarchist media activist Jen Angel , supports multimedia projects that help translate anarchist ideas and practices for the general public. We typically award several micro-grants ($300-$1500), prioritizing sm - Encampments Paved the Way for Jewish Liberation by Naomi Bennet

It feels downright naive at this point, but in 2016 Donald Trump shocked the political world with his campaign’s willingness to deploy antisemitic dog whistles to attack his political rivals. Prior to this, the common sense of US politics long held that there was no quicker way for one’s political career to be torpedoed than to be credibly accused of antisemitism. Setting aside how accurate this view was, or the extent to which such ideas themselves reflected delusions of powerful Jews pulling the strings in Washington, it held real sway over politicos. Since at least the 1980’s, even fascist-adjacent politicians had overwhelmingly either disavowed antisemitism, or been disavowed themselves by their own parties. As a consequence, discussions of antisemitism in mainstream US politics became increasingly abstracted from the reality of anti-Jewish oppression, with the figure of the Jew bein - 10 Movies for Anarchists (and the Anarcho-Curious) By Tate Williams

A handful of titles likely spring to mind when we talk about anarchist film. Most of them are a bit on the nose, you might say, showing up regularly in online lists that highlight more explicitly political classics like Salt of the Earth (1954) or The Battle of Algiers (1966). No shade to these syllabus-worthy films, many of which are quite good. But honestly, if you’re paying attention, anarchist movies are everywhere , thriving far outside of the academy and the arthouse. They span setting and genre, are foreign and domestic, indie and Hollywood. They are high-brow and low-brow. Some of them are for kids. And many of them are fantastic. To shine a light on some of these underrepresented gems, the following list has a couple classics, but seeks a more expansive view of what we might think of as anarchist film. One that may not use the exact terminology or delve into politics in a litera - CONTROL: Call for Perspectives’ Submissions: 2026 Deadline Extended to February 16th!

The Institute for Anarchist Studies is thrilled to announce the projects awarded with an Anarchist Horizons grant during our 2025 grant cycle. BREACH: a digest of operational theory for the party of anarchy by BREACH editors Out of the impasses of tactics and the impossibility of true strategy, the operational emerges. BREACH aims to demystify the radical uses and potent intersections of operational theory and anti-colonial war so that we can sharpen our analyses and practices. From blitzkrieg to counterinsurgency, modern militaries have often wrestled with questions of coordination and coherence in the absence of conventional command—the very dilemmas many radicals face today—our aim, in part, is to learn from their grapplings without reproducing their ends. The BREACH editors are an ecumenical assembly of wannabe anarchists, communists, and social revolutionaries who love our shared po - Applications Now Closed for the 2024-2025 Grant Cycle

On the eve of the 2024 election, the IAS is releasing its latest edition of Lexicon to interrogate the concept of democracy. Though the United States touts itself as the oldest existing democracy, it oversees the world’s largest carceral system and launches imperialist wars around the world. How can the concept of democracy inform or distract liberatory movements for radical change? Can we speak of democracy beyond the ballot box–or beyond the state entirely? Lexicon is a series of free pamphlets created by the IAS to convert words into politically useful tools. We will be providing a printable version, but for now you can read Democracy Beyond The State below, or as a PDF . If you’re interested, you can find our past Lexicons and the rest of our published books here . Lexicon: Democracy Beyond The State Democracy means rule by the people. In contrast to monarchies (rule by a king), olig
