- Meet the Unsecuring Infrastructures cohort
Sep 18, 2026 · original
Today we announce the 14 participants taking part in Unsecuring Infrastructures as part of AND Festival 2026. Across the festival weekend, invited experts and selected participants will experience the festival together before taking part in structured interdisciplinary discussions. In Disordered Attention, Claire Bishop argues that politically timed artistic interventions can perform “conjunctural analysis”, condensing the contradictions of their historical moment into highly abbreviated form. As a temporary, site-responsive festival arriving at the moment Barnsley is being recast as the UK’s first Tech Town, AND has considerable interventionary potential. Dr Nathan Jones’ Distributed Critique methodology gathers the different forms of expertise required to unpack this potential. They’ll use immersive and site-specific art experiences to combine the resulting insights into a multifaceted - CLOSED: Unsecuring Infrastructures Open Call

How might an encounter with contemporary art change what becomes visible within your own field of research? For Unsecuring Infrastructures at AND Festival 2026 , we are inviting PhD and postdoctoral researchers to join a small interdisciplinary research group in Barnsley. Barnsley is a former coal town now designated as the UK’s first government-backed Tech Town , with a programme exploring how AI and digital technologies can support public services, education, local businesses, skills and infrastructure. The festival’s commissions bring this technological transformation into contact with industrial memory, public space, identity, ecology and possible futures for the town. Building on Unsecurities Lab , an interdisciplinary research initiative at Lancaster University exploring contemporary art as research infrastructure, the workshop uses an experimental method called Distributed Critiqu - Opportunity: Volunteer at AND Festival 2026

Full programme and tickets are now live for the 10th edition of AND Festival . You can now unpack our festival programme of commissions, immersive installation, durational audiovisual work, films, urgent conversations and stimulating talks, taking place online and in unexpected locations across Barnsley and Elsecar. In this festival edition, we explore infrastructure as a lived material and cultural condition, illuminating the connection between people and place. We examine the networks, historical extraction legacies, and social climates that underpin contemporary life in the North of England. Across sound, simulation, and participatory systems, the festival dwells in the liminal zones of place, where infrastructures reveal the uneven geographies of industry, ecology, and community, and collective imaginaries take shape through shared experience. Using Barnsley as a site for experimentation, artists Dian Joy and Jazmin Morris, and spatial sound collective MONOM will each embark on a bold new commission in response to how built environments shape how we live, move and connect. We’re pleased to be sharing the first artists confirmed for AND Festival 2026. Landing in Barnsley in 25-27 September , this year’s festival explores infrastructures as a lived material and cultural condition, from histories of extraction and labour to food markets, independent cultural venues, post-industrial heritage sites, systems, and networks. The everyday structures we pass through and depend on, often without noticing. The three commissions bring together British-Nigerian interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker Dian Joy , whose work critically examines selfhood and identity in the digital era; Leeds-based artist and educator Jazmin Morris , who interro - The power of K-pop: Hwa Young Jung and Wild Natures

Artist and AND Creative Associate Hwa Young Jung has been working on Wild Natures , a long-term project exploring the experiences of migrant communities in the climate crisis discussion. As part of our collaborative partnership within the AND Creative Associates programme, Hwa Young has been sharing her socially engaged practice with us as we utilise this opportunity to better support our research and development. Hear more from Creative Associate Hwa Young about Wild Nature’s latest iteration below, using K-pop as a vehicle to creatively connect with issues around migration, biodiversity loss and collective belonging. My 6 months as an AND Creative Associate has been spent half reading, thinking and formulating a theory of practice. The other half has been practising and testing this theory with people. I’m really grateful to have this gift of time and money to explore these circles of - AND Festival returns for 2026
