  1. End of Summer Check In
    Aug 21, 2026 · original
kids , life , marriage , running , summer , updates This has been a fun summer, quite full compared to last. In a few weeks, we’ll have all three kids in some sort of school at the same time for the first time. That’s fun! And it reveals something true: every person who has said “it goes fast” is correct! We started the summer with a fun trip to Chattanooga, TN to hang out with my side of the family! We stayed in the same Airbnb which is such a wonderful amenity of modernity that you don’t have to stay in different rooms in a hotel. So, we had meals together, watched the opening games of the World Cup, went for runs, went to museums and aquariams, and had just had a great time together as a family. From there, Shepherd and Greta went back to Jackson with G and GiGi for a week of camp grandparents. This was Shepherd’s third summer doing this and Greta’s first time. They had a blast and im
  2. Kid’s first lost tooth: Shepherd!
    Aug 1, 2026 · original
childhood , kids , milestones , shepherd After a few weeks of a “wiggly tooth”, Shepherd overcame some nerves and fear and let us pull his first baby tooth! “Pull” is a strong word; it was barely hanging on. Shepherd, you were very stoked when it came out and you saw it and your realized that you’d overcome your fear. That was fun to see I told you that that’s something you’ll need to do in many situations in your life – overcome some fear or other – and that the scary part is the anticipation of the thing you fear happening, rather than the thing itself necessarily. You may not remember that, but I’ll try and remind you again. Love you buddy.
  3. A pure example of brilliance

AI , creativity , humor , intelligence , twitter To be topical for a moment, and therefore risk being boring, AI could never find the motivation to summon “intelligence” to produce something like this. pic.twitter.com/dhuedWRACJ — Ramin Nasibov (@RaminNasibov) July 28, 2026
  4. Modernity Amplified

They are on in the same, working on, and overlapping on, one another always. This has always happened in news and media of course, but the ad reads on podcasts are so “authentic” – of course, now that they are labeled authentic they no longer are – compared to the commercial breaks of cable TV news in the past. It used to be: Story about Clinton Impeachment or whatever “We’ll be right back after these messages” cuts to commercial on ordered special gold coins cuts back to news Now it i
  5. Running/Trying Hard/Pursuing Excellence
    Jul 16, 2026 · original
excellence , family , running , social-media , trying-hard , videos My focus has become excellence and trying hard through running. I’m focused on the marathon and working on it as a project for the next few years. I’m 33 and I figure that if I’m going to go for it, now is the time for the marathon. I think that after a few years I would be interested in pivoting back to ultras to try hard and pursue excellence there. My goal with making running my subject for the object of pursuing excellence and trying hard is that in pushing my body and mind well, the tide of my life will continue to rise as well; being a husband, a father, a friend, and so on. Making videos on the internet is also a subject of which I have taken up to pursue (strangely?) this excellence in my running and will try hard there so as to keep pushing myself. Here is where my fitness stands as of today. We shall check back
  6. HyperNormalisation:Adam Curtis
    Jul 14, 2026 · original
adam-curtis , baudrillard , documentary , hyperreality , politics , social-media His documentaries are getting me. Resonating with themes of Baudrillard and mass media and other quite fascinating and unfortunate themes. This one is all the same.
  7. Important experiences/identities getting relegated
    Jul 13, 2026 · original
identity , meaning , rockmont , value Perhaps only in anticipation, or in retrospect, is this a useful way of thinking, but here it goes: Very important periods of time in one’s life will end and be thought of as not so important; not unimportant, but just that one will think, “how interesting that I thought that would be the most important thing forever.” Same is true with pieces of your identity; the pieces that have very sharp edges will be relegated later for something else and in retrospect one will think, “how interesting that being good at X was so important to who I thought of myself to be.” An example: the summer camp where I met Sadie, where we lived for 6 years and brought 2/3 kids home to, is no longer important in my day to day experience or my identity. We don’t live and work there anymore; I’m older and those sharp edges are duller; and more things are more important now,
  8. Happy Independence Day!
    Jul 4, 2026 · original
america , declaration-of-independence , freedom , society Read this piece in Compact Magazine from James Vaughn, a historian, at the University of Chicago and find myself quite amazed by the unique historical event that is the 250th anniversary of The United States. The Persian and Roman empires have been in the cultural psyche recently, because America has warred with both Iran and the Pope, and it has been mentioned that those societies are more impressive or virtuous because they lasted, or are lasting, longer than we have. Granted. However, it is true that the establishment of the United States, through the Declaration of Independence, has been the greatest equalizing export of any society, no? James Vaughn makes an interesting point – something that wouldn’t have occurred to me – that the success of the Declaration of Independence hinges on a society built on the free exchange of la
  9. Shepherd goes to camp!
    Jul 4, 2026 · original
childhood , fun , independence , parenting , summer , summer-camp We dropped Shepherd off at Rockmont last Sunday, and for all we know he’s having a great time! This was such a big part of my early adulthood and start to life; where I made great friends, great strides in my life’s formation, and where I met and fell in love with Sadie. So, to be able to send him there to start his little journey is pretty cool!
  10. Neighbors helping me fix a water main leak
    Jul 4, 2026 · original
friendship , home-repair , kindness , neighbors “ A writer – and, I believe, generally all persons – must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art. ” – Jorge Luis Borges I can’t overstate how important my neighbors are. Many times in the past they have helped me (i.e., our family); with 5 minutes of their time or a tool or much advice on what to do about some thing I have no idea about. To my discredit, I don’t know how to fix a thing gone wrong with zero information. When these things go wrong, they start with thinking out loud on what they’d do and then end up just helping me do it. For 5 great hours, my neighbors help
