The Lost Jungle (1934) While a feature-film reworking of a serial is nothing unusual, this version of The Lost Jungle differs significantly from its 12-chapter counterpart in many respects. Most surprisingly, it includes long stretches of footage shot specifically for this production, entirely new in some cases or a restructuring of existing scenes in others, intercut with pieces of the original story—mostly Clyde Beatty’s “training” scenes. Here, Beatty and Ruth Robinson (Cecilia Parker) are in love at the outset, though his shyness with women and his focus on his animals means they aren’t getting to the point, much to the exasperation of Captain Robinson (Edward LeSaint). About to embark on an expedition with Professor Livingston (Crauford Kent), the Captain issues an ultimatum: either Beatty and Ruth get married immediately – as in RIGHT NOW, since he’s departing for “the South Seas”

The Lost Jungle (1934, 12 chapters) “I do all my training without beating the animals up,” declares Clyde Beatty, World’s Greatest Animal Trainer, at the outset of this serial—which is to say, it’s perfectly okay to capture, confine, choke, bully and generally terrorise your animals, but don’t poke them with a length of wood. Beatty follows up his declaration by giving his bad-tempered subordinate, Sharkey (Warner Richmond), guilty of “beating up” a leopard that won’t obey him, a sock on the jaw, thus rousing him to a state of murderous hatred which will thankfully provide a few amusing moments in this otherwise dreary effort. Deciding that he doesn’t already have enough lions and tigers to torment train, Beatty sets off for India and Africa in a dirigible accompanied by press agent / Odious Comic Relief Larry Henderson (Sid Saylor, whose schtick consists almost entirely of waggling his

Terror Island (1920) Harry Harper (Harry Houdini) designs a submarine with new features including a hatch by which people may enter and exit while submerged. He plans to use it to search for the wreck of the Hawk , which was carrying a cargo of South African diamonds when it sank in the South Seas. Meanwhile, Beverley West (Lila Lee) holds a map showing the position of the Hawk and a skull-shaped pearl, both sent to her by her trader-father. In a letter, Mr West (Fred Turner) pleads with Beverley to return the pearl to the natives, otherwise he will be sacrificed. He also warns her not to trust her uncle, Job Mordaunt (Wilton Taylor), but to hold onto the pearl and the map. Only interested in the diamonds, Mordaunt schemes to rob Beverley; while she, seeing a newspaper article on Harper’s submarine, offers him a partnership… Not a serial! spruiks the advertising art for Terror Island , t

The Return Of Chandu (1934, 12 episodes) When an attempt is made to abduct the Princess Nadji (Maria Alba), she leaves Egypt for California, staying at the home of Dorothy Regent (Clara Kimball Young) and her children, Bob (Dean Benton) and Betty (Phyllis Ludwig). The four of them eagerly await the arrival of Dorothy’s brother, Frank Chandler (Bela Lugosi), also known as “Chandu the Magician” for his mastery of the mystical arts. Dorothy plans a lavish reception for her royal guest, but evil forces are gathering… Though two men are sent to kill him when he arrives at the airport, Chandler evades them by use of his magic ring and reaches the house in time to stop Nadji drinking wine drugged by the butler, Nito (Frazer Acosta). Under hypnotic influence, Nito reveals that Nadji is being pursued by the Sect of Ubasti, whose members practice black magic. Chandler tells the others that the pre

Tales of Hoffmann (1916) Based upon the opera by Jacques Offenbach and Jules Barbier; original title: Hoffmanns Erzählungen ( Hoffmann’s Stories ). This silent German film is simultaneously rather disappointing and very important—the first because it adheres closely to its secondary source, the opera, with its focus on tragic love, and downplays the horror and science-fiction themes of the actual stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Yet while doing this, Tales Of Hoffmann also employs a linear narrative rather than the flashbacks of its source, via which Hoffmann tells of his various lost loves, and as a consequence sometimes becomes confusing. Some passages from the life of Hoffmann (played young and older by Kurt Wolowski and Erich Kaiser-Titz) are used as a framing device, first bringing him into contact with a dancer called Angela (Relly Ridon), who has a mysterious illness that has forced he

In Night And Ice (1912) We tend to consider it poor taste now if a film about a real-world disaster follows too hard on the heels of the disaster itself, but such was evidently not the case in 1912, when the first fictional film about the sinking of the Titanic was released on the 16th of May, only 31 days later. Film executive Jules Brulatour’s first venture in this area was a faux -documentary on the disaster made up of cobbled-together newsreel and specially-shot material featuring the ill-fated Captain Smith prior to departure, various features of the Titanic and its launch, and footage of the Carpathia ‘s arrival in New York. Released on 22nd April, the short film was a huge success, which may have prompted Brulatour to return to the well by making Saved From The Titanic . American actress Dorothy Gibson was a Titanic survivor: one of those who made it into the first lifeboat and wa

Moby Dick (1930) After a three-year voyage, the whaling ship Mary Anne sails into New Bedford. While friends and family look anxiously for loved ones, some of those gathered, particularly the women, gaze upwards into the rigging, at the reckless acrobatics of harpoonist Ahab Ceely (John Barrymore). One of those enthralled is Faith Mapple (Joan Bennett), who has come to the docks with Ahab’s brother, Derek (Loyd Hughes). Once on land, Ahab is deeply smitten by Faith and, while usually a womaniser and a rowdy drinker, he begins to temper his behaviour. However, circumstances convince him that Faith is really in love with Derek; and it is only on the verge of his departure on another voyage that she is able to convince him otherwise: the two exchange promises. Out at sea, Ahab harpoons the notorious “white whale” known as Moby Dick, but he and his crewman have their boat wrecked by the anim

Submarine (1928) While naval diver Jack Dorgan (Jack Holt) searches for and buoys a sunken wreck, on the deck of their ship Bob Mason (Ralph Graves) acts as his phone contact. When a bomb is released overboard to destroy the wreck, Dorgan becomes tangled in the tow-rope and is dragged underwater; Mason immediately goes to his rescue, cutting him free: the two escape the blast just in the nick of time. Soon afterwards, the best friends are separated when Mason is assigned submarine duty. A year later, at a dance pavilion, Dorgan meets a woman called Bessie (Dorothy Revier) and is deeply smitten. Tired of her equivocal existence, Bessie accepts his proposal. Three months later, however, the narrowness of married life has begun to pall on her; and when Dorgan must leave home for a week’s assignment, Bessie takes the opportunity to revisit the pavilion for some dancing and fun. There she mee

The Stone Rider (1923) Original title: Der steinerne Reiter . At a peasant wedding in a valley, an old man tells the younger people that there was a time when such a thing would not have been permitted. He points out a strangely shaped rock overlooking the valley, and tells the story of the “Stone Rider”… While their lord is away from his mountain stronghold, the peasants of the valley hurry to celebrate the wedding of Schaffnerin (Emilia Unda) and Jäger (Gustav von Wangenheim). Jäger climbs up to the mountain retreat of Schaffnerin’s sister, Hirtin (Lucie Mannheim), to persuade her to attend, but she refuses, replying bitterly that such defiance of their lord can only end in disaster. As he carouses with his friends, Herr vom Berge (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) is informed that his peasants are defying his orders: enraged, he immediately sets out for the valley—declaring that, if the peasants in
