  1. Saint of the day: Francis of Assisi
    Oct 4, 2026 · original
St. Francis was born in the early 1180s, one of many children born into a wealthy family. He was originally named Giovanni, but his father called him Francesco (Francis). In his youth, Francis had an active social life, enjoying the benefits of his father’s wealth and status. He fought in a war with a rival Italian city-state, and was imprisoned. During that time, Francis began thinking more seriously about his true purpose, and received a recurring dream that suggested his true “army” was more heavenly in nature. In 1205, he returned to Assisi and considered a life of voluntary poverty. In Assisi, he kissed the hand of a leper, overcoming his fear of diseases. He then made a pilgrimage to Rome, and left his money at the tomb of St. Peter and gave his clothes to a beggar. After returning home in poverty, St. Francis received a vision from Christ, telling him to “repair my house.” Francis
  2. Saint of the day: Mother Théodore Guérin
    Oct 3, 2026 · original
St. Mother Théodore Guérin was born Anne-Therese Guérin in France on October 2, 1798. During her childhood, the French government was shutting down churches and arresting priests and religious. Anne-Therese’s cousin was a seminarian, living in hiding at her parents’ home, and he taught her theology and catechism. At age 26, Anne-Therese entered the Sisters of Providence to provide religious education to young students, and took the name Théodore Guérin. She was recognized for her great intelligence, and in 1840 she was sent to the US, to Vincennes, Indiana, to found a convent. Mother Théodore opened the first girls’ boarding school in the state and championed Catholic education. Her convent of Our Lady of the Woods was constantly under threat of attack from anti-Catholics and from Catholics themselves. The bishop of Vincennes excommunicated Mother Théodore because he was unable to meddle
  3. Catholic leaders praise proposed rules for Federal Scholarship Tax Credit
    Oct 2, 2026 · original
Catholic education leaders are applauding proposed regulations for the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, which incentivizes private contributions to K-12 scholarships benefiting students in public, charter or private schools, including religious. On Oct. 1, the U.S. Treasury Department and the IRS jointly announced the proposed regulations for the program (also known as the Education Freedom Tax Credit), which was enacted in 2025 and is set to launch Jan. 1. According to the two federal agencies, some 96% of children in participating states would be eligible to receive funds. The "transformative" tax credit "will create opportunities for families to access much-needed resources to expand their options for choosing the best tools and learning environment for their children," said Bishop David M. O'Connell of Trenton, New Jersey, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee
  4. 'The Chosen' invites parishes to come and see season six together
    Oct 2, 2026 · original
I had the chance to visit the set of " The Chosen " while the cast and crew were filming scenes of the seventh and final season. Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus, was preparing to film a scene at the empty tomb, with prosthetic nail marks on his hands. As I spoke with Jonathan and members of the production crew, I sensed a bittersweetness on the set. After years of filming, traveling, creating and telling the story of Jesus and his Apostles, they were nearing the end of a remarkable chapter. Something more than a television series was coming to completion. If you have been following "The Chosen," you know what lies ahead. Season six brings us into the final days of Jesus' earthly ministry as he embraces his passion and offers himself for our redemption through his death on the cross. The weight of portraying these scenes was not lost on Jonathan. He describes filming the passion and d
  5. 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Living on the vine
    Oct 2, 2026 · original
Is. 5:1–7 / Ps. 80:9, 12–16, 19–20 / Phil. 4:6–9 / Mt. 21:33–43 In this week’s Gospel, Jesus returns to the Old Testament symbol of the vineyard to teach about Israel, the Church, and the kingdom of God. And the symbolism of the First Reading and Psalm is also readily understood. God is the owner and the house of Israel is the vineyard. A cherished vine, Israel was plucked from Egypt and transplanted in a fertile land specially spaded and prepared by God, hedged about by the city walls of Jerusalem, watched over by the towering Temple. But the vineyard produced no good grapes for the wine, a symbol for the holy lives God wanted for his people. So God allowed his vineyard to be overrun by foreign invaders, as Isaiah foresees in the First Reading. Jesus picks up the story where Isaiah leaves off, even using Isaiah’s words to describe the vineyard’s wine press, hedge, and watchtower. Israel
  6. Saint of the day: Guardian Angels
    Oct 2, 2026 · original
October 2 is the feast day of Guardian Angels. The concept of guardian angels is expressed in the Old and New Testaments, and Jesus makes their existence explicitly clear in the Gospel of Matthew, when he says, “See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven” (18-10). Jesus tells us that everyone, even small children, has a guardian angel, and the mission of these angels is to protect us throughout our lives and guide us to heaven. But as St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, angels cannot act directly upon our will or intellect, so they can only guide us to heaven if we want to go there. They can act on our senses and imaginations, encouraging us to make the right choices and live as Jesus wants us to. The prayer to the guardian angels has been recited since at least the early 12th century: “Angel of
