- Striper Stories Worth Sharing
Nov 24, 2025 · original
People, and their stories, make fishing special. Rex Messing In setting out to reflect on 60 years of fishing, I assumed it would be the old battles with fish large and long sought that would remain most sharply etched in memory. I was wrong. Except for some milestone fish — first striper from the surf, first 50-pounder, a linesider taken as a young teen in a snow squall, that sort of thing — my most durable fishing memories are the people. It’s the people and their stories that stick with me. The tales told by a slew of fishing friends and others I’ve encountered on beaches, on the rocks and on the docks when the weather kept the boats tied up. It’s our oldest story: family, friendship, kinfolk, camaraderie, loyalty, bloodlines. “Nothing,” Springsteen intoned in his world-weary voice, “feels better than blood on blood.” The striped bass fishery is still populated by hundreds of small, c - Between Fish: Fall Striper Blitz Reflections
Nov 17, 2025 · original
The late-season striper blitz is packed with action. Tom Lynch The heartbeat of the Northeast fishery is strongest in the fall, when large migrations are underway, daylight is waning, and anglers try to tap into one those fabled blitzes that must be experienced to fully appreciate. In the weeks before the equinox, birds, baitfish, the most sought-after gamefish and a host of other critters begin to marshal their strength to sail southward or offshore. That’s when you see early signs of autumn in the changing light on the water, though the calendar still says summer and you’re still happily wet-wading. The first weeks of September are the best time to snare a few stripers early, then lean your rod against a beach log and body-surf the crisp, translucent break. The water is still plenty warm. You pick a day with a snappy ground swell, the type spawned by an offshore low, not the mushy wind - Shakespeare Launches Contender Series

Nov 10, 2025 · original
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a plan to take over red snapper management off the state’s Atlantic coast. DeSantis, alongside Roger Young, executive director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission , sent a request to the Secretary of Commerce to implement an exempted fishing permit. The permit calls for a 39-day recreational fishing season for red snapper in the south Atlantic for Florida anglers. The season will be divided into two segments: the first running from Memorial Day weekend (May 22) through June 20, and the second over the course of three consecutive weekends in October (Oct. 2-4, 9-11 and 16-18). Florida’s Atlantic red snapper season this year was open just two days. Boating giant bluefin tuna is an adventure with the Kelly boys. Stephanie Kelly The late-90s, forest green, nearly rusted-out Chevy Suburban pulls into the train station parking lot in Stamford, Connecticut. It’s late summer circa 2019, and I am drenched to the bone in sweat, still donning my corporate fatigues after having caught a last-minute express train uptown from Manhattan’s Financial District and an express Metro North commuter. Such is the existence of the boatless, carless weekend warrior when a last-minute invite for a bluefin tuna trip pops up. The invitation to fish came from Colin and Ryan Kelly, brothers whom I’ve known most of my life dating back to high school. Ambition and itinerance have carried them a long way since our intrepid teenage exploits. Patience, however, does not rank high among their virtues. Long viewed as a warm-up to the Bisbee’s Black & Blue marlin jackpot tournament in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the Los Cabos Offshore has steadily grown over the last two decades. Though it is smaller by Black & Blue standards, the LCO has become a world-class, multi-million-dollar tournament on its own. The 2025 edition, which ran Oct. 15-17, featured 139 teams and more than $2.7 million in prize money. Teams fished the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez off Baja California’s southernmost point. During the three days of competition, 369 billfish were caught, including 99 blue marlin, 116 sailfish, 148 striped marlin and six blacks. The yellowfin tuna tally numbered 15 weighed fish, along with 11 dorado. No Limits Fishing took top honors. Photo courtesy Kristy Bisbee Brian Spicer, Capt.
