- Record(s) o’ the Month – June 2026
Oct 3, 2026 · original
As we race to catch up with modern times, we’ve finally entered the summer stage of 2026! June was sweaty with heat and also a slate of quality releases, and the staff voting list was long and confusing, but we did the best we could to make sense of it and give the little people their say. As we always say, democracy is a filthy, messy business, best left to the professionals. We are them. Hyper-melodic doom-death crew Fires in the Distance have been on quite a roll since their 2020 debut, taking their classic sadbi melodoom template and slowly expanding it over several releases. Third gloom platter, Circadian Promise [out June 12th on Prosthetic Records ] finds just the right balance between heaviness and melodic hooks, and with a new vocalist, they push their sound out to new horizons of fire. Death roars and clean vocals pair with stirring, emotive guitar and keyboard work to create g - Hippotraktor – Annihilist Review
Oct 2, 2026 · original
In 2024, Belgian quintet Hippotraktor dropped Stasis , a monolithic blend of post-metal atmosphere, progressive ambition and groovy heft—somewhere between Psychonaut , 1 The Ocean and Meshuggah —that quickly earned them recognition, even landing on year-end lists. Their knack for hitting the sweet spot where djent, post-metal and prog collide set a high bar and third album, Annihilist , now seeks to surpass it by refining the group’s identity, the mystery behind their name, and the ongoing narrative of their nameless protagonist from the prior two releases. This chapter finds him suspended between solitude and humanity, fully aware of this forced, cyclical reincarnation and locked in rebellion against the entity that condemns him to do it. Annihilist feels like wandering through a vast brutalist landscape. The album feels markedly colder and more distant, scraping with the coarseness of - Firtan – Helios Review
Oct 2, 2026 · original
From operating on the outskirts, Germany’s Firtan now barely need an introduction. Their sweepingly dramatic, folk-infused brand of pagan blackened death has made them an increasingly prominent name in the scene, aided by their consistency in delivering a record nearly every two years since 2018. Despite this pace, the quality has also remained consistently high, with review after review here praising the music’s balance of grace and viciousness, even if opinion has sometimes differed on the magnitude of the flaws. I am now the third AMG incarnation to tackle the band, ready to be carried away on the path to enlightenment Helios charts. Shooting for the moon sun, Firtan project a stratospheric arc that Helios is compelled to describe, but which, if missed, would land the album comfortably amongst the neighbouring stars. Helios continues the trajectory predecessor Ethos began, dialling up - Frozen Crown – The Legend of the Six Kings Review
Oct 2, 2026 · original
Frozen Crown does not seem like a group that’s content to sit still for very long. Since The Fallen King in 2018, they have yet to let more than two years go by between full-length releases. These Italians have tinkered with their signature blend of power metal and various other subgenres over the years, on which Eldritch Elitist has expertly expounded with overall positive results. Most recently, he praised 2024’s War Hearts for its concise, pop-leaning compositions. Their sixth album, The Legend of the Six Kings , is a continuation of this sleek, streamlined strategy, with outcomes that may be surprising for longtime fans. The most immediately obvious change is in Frozen Crown ’s velocity, as they move away from a fast-paced Wintersun sound and towards a mid-paced Battle Beast emphasis on rousing anthems. Whereas the melodic death metal influence used to be heard in the instrumentation - Brymir – What We Leave Behind Review
Oct 1, 2026 · original
Four years after Brymir dropped fourth LP Voices in the Sky , the Finnish quartet reemerges with fifth opus, What We Leave Behind . Despite parting ways with longtime guitarist Sean Haslam last year, fans of the band will be happy to hear Brymir ’s core sound remains intact. Sleek melodic leads coat What We Leave Behind ’s three-quarters of an hour, and they go down smoother than an ice-cold lonkero after an honest day’s work. Brymir ’s third album Wings of Fire introduced me to the ensemble, and as Dr. Wvrm alluded to in his Voices in the Sky write-up, I was one of those won over by Wings ’ spectacular apotheosis of symphonic melodeath. Voices in the Sky cleared the goalpost as well, and so I come to What We Leave Behind with great expectations—does it complete the Bry fecta? A natural continuation of Voices in the Sky , the front half of What We Leave Behind brings sweet, candy-coated - Desolate Pathway – Visions in Death Review
Oct 1, 2026 · original
People have been imagining monsters as the harbingers of their doom for millennia. In Homer’s The Odyssey , men met their makers at the hands of creatures ranging from a man-eating cyclops to dangerously alluring sirens. The English epic poem, Beowulf , included the monstrous Grendel, who terrorized and ate townsfolk, and more than a thousand years later Bram Stoker would tell about a blood-sucking vampire, Count Dracula. Fears of worldwide annihilation eventually came in the form of Kaiju monsters and flesh-eating zombies. For the misery and despair these beings have wrought (at least on our imaginations), it’s only fitting that a band dabbling in epic doom takes on the theme of monsters and demons. England’s Desolate Pathway didn’t start out with an interest in this topic. They formed in 2014, focused on fantasy (2014’s Valley of the King ) and mythology (2016’s Of Gods and Heroes ). A - Amon Amarth – The Allfather Awakens Review
Sep 30, 2026 · original
Vikings and their warrior ethos are a central archetype for metal of all stripes. Hyper-violent warriors from the frozen wastes who descend on coastal towns with great violence and furious anger; what could be more metal than that? Perpetually riding at the front of that particular longship, Amon Amarth have made their share of filthy lucre crafting paeans to the mystical warriors of olde. Since 1994, they’ve spun many yarns of Viking bravery, mythos, and generalized berserker mayhem in ways that have captivated legions of metallers. 2022s The Great Heathen Army was arguably their least interesting outing over a long career, leaving fans hoping for a mighty rebound on The Allfather Awakens . The release of their cowboy-ified video for “Eight Legs of Thunder” didn’t bode well for things to come, but all things unfold as the Allfather directs. What awaits fans of ancient battles and cultur - AMG Goes Ranking – Amon Amarth

The decree sounded across the Ginnungagap. There was not yet time or space, nor were there menfolk to hear it… but still there was the decree. Amon Amarth is coming . They sing melodic death metal songs about Vikings. That’s what the frick they do, and don’t you question it or get tired of it or do anything but listen and pay fealty. For it is promised that if you give Amon Amarth ten dollars, they will give you ten killer songs about Vikings. The decree held sway across all the joys and sorrows of man and throughout the Three Ages of Amon Amarth . The Bronze Age witnessed a talented group of musicians announce themselves with Once Sent from the Golden Hall , then hone their sound over three subsequent records. Versus the World was a pivot point that saw Amon Amarth lock into something everlasting. Fate of Norns ushered in the band’s Golden Age, a run that includes With Oden on Our Side - Tombstalker – Chaos Monolith Review
Sep 29, 2026 · original
Kentucky’s veteran death metal crew, Tombstalker, offer a blast from the past in a couple of ways. Firstly, after dropping their solidly impressive debut album Black Crusades back in 2015, Tombstalker continued touring before hitting roadblocks, going on hiatus, and rejigging their line-up. Releasing a couple of EPs in the intervening years, the rejuvenated line-up now unleash their long-gestating sophomore album, Chaos Monolith . Boasting a hulking, extra beefy sound rooted in rank old school values and influences, Tombstalker are not seeking to reinvent the wheel, remaining content to crush the weak through a meaty concoction of throwback old school death, armed with thorny, uncompromisingly brutal bursts of d-beaten violence, charred blackened melodies and rugged doom-death heft, wearing their crust and classic Swedish death influences proudly upon weathered sleeves. Yet does Tombstal - Orbital Soul System – Nightwing Review
Sep 29, 2026 · original
Space is very metal. So I’ve always been surprised that it’s a relatively underdeveloped topic across most styles. Bands like Enshine , of course, make it all the rage every now and again, but it’s not something I see often. Orbital Soul System (formerly Orbital Dawn ) is working to correct this perspective. The one-man solo project of one U-Gene ( Rakoth ) from Russia is now releasing its third full-length album, Nightwing . Boasting a tag of blackened progressive death metal and a clear cosmic theme, Orbital Soul System feels like it’s reaching for the stars with its latest—it’s certainly an ambitious moniker for a single artist. They say to shoot for the moon, because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. Let’s see where Nightwing lands. Nightwing lands on the “death” side of its lengthy genre moniker, leaning on heavy riffs and harsh vocals and aiming to be a heavy-hitting c
