- Going the Distance for Rocky
Sep 14, 2026 · original
For Rocky, finding a new home began with a promise. The five-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix had already been through heartbreaking change. After losing the person he loved most, Rocky found himself starting over at Animal League America. Despite being affectionate, playful, and a favorite among our volunteers — the right family still hadn’t found him, and years were passing by. Our social media team made Rocky a promise: we’re going to post you every single day until you go home. And our entire community joined in. For nine straight days, Rocky filled our social feeds. Some posts were heartfelt. Others were funny. And every post carried the same message: Rocky was still waiting, and somewhere out there was someone who needed to see him. People rooted for him from near and far. More than 200 miles away in Massachusetts, a couple looking for their perfect dog were watching, too. Rocky’ - Ringing the Opening Bell for Rescue

On July 15, the opening of the New York Stock Exchange came with a little extra puppy power. North Shore Animal League America took center stage at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square, where Senior Vice President and Chief of Veterinary Staff Dr. Mark Verdino had the honor of ringing the opening bell, surrounded by colleagues, supporters, and some very special four-legged guests. Joining Dr. Verdino for the celebration were Senior Vice President and CFO Valerie Jones-Canny, Vice President of Shelter Operations Diane Johnson, and Vice President of Strategic Development Partnerships Diana Zaferiou, along with donors, volunteers, staff, and partners who all help make our no-kill mission possible. Before the countdown began, Dr. Verdino used the spotlight to share an important part of what makes Animal League America unique: the scope of our veterinary care. “Veterinary services at North S - How can I obtain true ownership of a dog from an abusive partner?

Question My actual boyfriend gifted me and him, as birthday gift, a dog. He doesn’t treat him right when he is stressed or mad or if the dog makes any kind of mess or pees or poops inside the house. I want to break up with him because I can’t tolerate it anymore but I want to keep the dog - the point is he has paid the vet and food but that doesn’t mean he is mentally okay. He even contaminated me with chlamydia. I can’t be with an abusive partner and let him keep the dog, I can’t. Please help, this in an emergency. Answer There is an expression, “Possession is nine-tenths of the law.” Although not always true, it means that the person who has possession (and has not stolen the animal) is frequently in a better position, at least initially, than the person who does not have possession. This is because the person who does not have possession often has the burden of suing to try to get the - Ways to get dog back after bad rehoming situation?

Question How to get dog back after rehoming under false pretenses? The new owner will not let my children see the dog and the dog is locked in a crate all day long. Answer People who rehome their animal generally have no further rights to that animal, including visitation, unless there is an agreement stating otherwise. Verbal agreements can be difficult to enforce without corroborating evidence, in part because disputing parties often recount different versions of their agreement. People who believe that their animal is being wrongfully withheld, based on breach of contract or other cause of action, can sue to try to get the animal returned. People who suspect that an animal is being mistreated should contact local law enforcement authorities, such as the police, sheriff, animal control, and local humane societies and SPCAs (societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals). Question We adopted a puppy on 11/07/2025 when we adopted him, he wasn’t neutered because his testicles hadn’t dropped. Our dog Wrigley has had a lot of health problems so with that said we never brought him back to be neutered. They reached out a few times, and we were out of town but then the other times he had a lot of health issues, and we did explain this to them. Now they have reached out saying we must have him neutered or they will have their lawyers contact us. The contract I signed doesn’t say anything about neutering. What can I do about this? Answer Neutering helps to control the overpopulation of dogs and can provide health benefits. So what can you do about your situation? You can have your dog neutered when your veterinarian says the dog is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Mutt-i-grees Launches Its First Summer Reading Program This summer, North Shore Animal League America’s education program, The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum , launched its first Summer Reading Program, welcoming students of all ages to the shelter for a unique experience reading alongside adoptable animals. The program has been a tremendous success, bringing together literacy, compassion, and the human-animal bond as young readers shared stories with animals in need. Throughout the summer, children, teens, and families have visited the shelter to spend time reading aloud to adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. While the experience provides participants with the chance to practice their reading skills in a supportive, judgment-free environment, it also creates something even more meaningful: genuine connections between people and animals. Question Last year in December I gave my cat away to my co-worker. I recently found out that the cat is not being taken care of properly and want her back so that I have peace of mind that the cat is safe in my care. She’s offered to let me cat sit at my house while she goes on vacation, legally, could I just keep the cat at that point, with the concerns I have? Neither of us have documentation of ownership but I have the cat’s shot records while my co-worker has no papers. Ohio, USA Answer People who sell or give their animal away generally have no further rights to that animal unless there is an agreement stating otherwise. It would NOT be legal for a pet-sitter, even a person who formerly was the animal’s “parent,” to take the animal without the permission of the animal’s current “parent.” Offering to purchase an animal sometimes works to get the animal returned, as unfair as that may - Planning for Love: Margaret’s Promise to Her Cats
Jul 13, 2026 · original
For Margaret who lives in Indiana, cats have long been a source of comfort and companionship. “I have six,” she said, naming them one by one: Mindy, Peanut, Faith, Sunshine, Midnight and Pandora. Asked if she has a favorite, like any parent Margaret was firm: “Nope.” With an endless supply of compassion for felines in need, Margaret has also fostered many cats over the years, often the ones who needed the most help. “In fact, all of the animals that I’ve had as an adult probably were due to fostering issues,” she explained. “I frequently kept the ones that struggled to get adopted.” Her awareness of Animal League America began decades ago with the unforgettable story of Scarlett. In 1996, firefighters in Brooklyn watched as the stray mother cat ran into a burning building again and again, carrying her kittens out one by one. By the time she finished, Scarlett had suffered severe burns, b - Furry-Side Chats, Summer 2026

“I easily fell in love with this girl” The Hands That Helped Her Home Earlier this year, a litter of puppies arrived through our rescue partners at Friends of Jefferson Animals, and one of them — Binky — came with something very special: a heartfelt letter written by the young girl who had fostered her. In her note to Binky’s future adopter, Madi shared how much the sweet puppy, rescued from the side of a busy highway, meant to her and her family, and how they worked to give the pup the best possible start. “She was a sick little thing but has pulled through and is a wonderful baby,” Madi wrote. “She has learned how to sit and loves to have her picture taken… I easily fell in love with this girl and same for her. I hope you love this bundle of joy and goodness as much as we do.” When Binky was adopted, our rescue team shared Madi’s letter with her new family. Touched by the care that had
