- Life of Pei, an extraordinary journey toward compassion for animals (Book Review)
Aug 1, 2024 · original
It was at the Asia for Animals conference in Singapore in 2005 when I first met Pei Feng Su. She was standing at the rear of an exhibit room, behind an array of images of animals photographed undercover for an expose of Chinese fur farms. The pictures were horrifying and heartbreaking, but the cruelty was important to document, as China was then and is still the world’s largest fur market. In contrast to the sickening images, the face of Pei Feng Su was calm and comforting. She gave off the vibe of a person who was easy to know, with warm eyes and an open visage. I had the feeling that I already knew her. But though we became instant friends, I knew little of her remarkable life story until reading her 2024 autobiography Life of Pei: The Battle for Compassion, My Story and Journey So Far . People come to animal advocacy along many paths. Perhaps most come from having relationships with a - History of India’s Animal Welfare Movement Revealed in New Book by Dr. Prashanth Krishna

A new book, History of the Animal Welfare Movement in Madras-Chennai by Dr. Prashanth Krishna, was launched at a special ceremony in India by member of parliament Maneka Gandhi, who discussed important milestones in the recent history of animal welfare and exhorted listeners to promote the concept of Ahimsā as it pertains to human attitudes about animals. Ahimsā, or non-violence, is an essential part of Indian culture and is India’s unique contribution to world culture. The principle of compassion towards animals is an indispensable part of Indian culture. When colonialism hit India, there was a radical change. In colonial greed to convert forests into revenue yielding agricultural land, predators were decreed to be vermin and killed, Indian dogs were shooting targets, and cattle were considered useful only as long as they gave milk or pulled carts. The concept of the slaughterhouse to p - Animal Welfare and Biodiversity: A Brief Primer on the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework

This article is adapted from a document prepared by Animal People for distribution at the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Conference of Parties 15 (COP 15), underway from December 7-19th, 2022. It was written by Wolf Gordon Clifton and Kim Bartlett (Animal People) in consultation with Purity Karuga and Josphat Ngonyo (Africa Network for Animal Welfare). What is Animal Welfare? Animal welfare describes efforts to promote the wellbeing of non-human animals, especially by reducing suffering caused by human activities. Animal welfare recognizes animals as individuals – sentient beings with interests of their own which warrant ethical consideration, including in law and policy. It also interlinks closely with environmental and sustainable development initiatives, including efforts to protect human and environmental health. U.N. Environment recently recognized a “Nexus” between animal wel - Why Ending Animal Agriculture Could Save the Planet

The world is burning and so are countless innocent lives… literally. The environmental catastrophes predicted due to climate change are happening now. For instance, the wildfires in Greece and France and the flooding in Germany and Turkey. Yet the vast majority of people on the planet are carrying on with lifestyles that are causing environmental breakdown and tremendous suffering. What’s going to make us change? Scientists agree that human activities are the cause of the environmental crisis that we are facing. Unfortunately, one of the main causes of climate change and environmental destruction is underestimated by almost everyone, that is animal agriculture (AA). We need to properly acknowledge the part that animal agriculture plays in the environmental crisis. In a recent article in the Journal of Ecological Society , Dr. Silesh Rao details the real environmental impact of AA, which - Can Biologists Describe New Species Without Killing Them?
Apr 30, 2021 · original
In taxonomy, a type specimen is an individual organism used to officially represent a species or subspecies. The type specimen referenced when describing a new species for the first time is called a holotype. No new taxon can be officially named without a holotype, according to the rules of the various International Codes of Nomenclature, which apply to different fields of biology (including zoology, botany, and microbiology). Traditionally, holotypes are physical specimens, meaning that unless biologists can obtain an organism that’s already dead (or capture one alive and care for it for the rest of its life), they must kill a member of the newly discovered species in order to describe it. Apr 29, 2021 · original
What insight does an evolutionary perspective bring to movements to reduce animal suffering? Can an understanding of the evolution of human psychology and behavior challenge widely-held ideas about why we mistreat animals, and perhaps offer new strategies for improving the lives of animals? In an interview with evolutionary psychologist Dr. Diana Fleischman, she offered her insight on these questions and others. While Dr. Fleischman has shared end goals with many ethical vegans and members of the animal rights and protection movement(s), her perspective and positions often differ in ways that some may find challenging and controversial. Read our discussion below to learn more about why she became disillusioned with strict vegans, why she says animal abuse is “normal,” and why she doesn’t think changing human feelings is the best way to reduce animal suffering. Many people who care about animals (be they farmed/domesticated or wild) or the environment seem to think that these animals or the planet would be better off without humans. I want to argue here why humans disappearing from the face of the planet (whatever that would mean or imply for the humans themselves) may not be a good thing for non-human life, at least not in the long run. Yes, we’re responsible for incredible suffering That the presence of humans on this planet could be a good thing for animals probably sounds like a counterintuitive idea to many readers. On my blog I have a post titled “ Would you press a button to make humanity go extinct? ” Many of the comments on the post suggested that yes, indeed, it would be good if humans went extinct somehow. Some comments were actually so full of expletives about the human race that I didn’t publish them. Obviously, Homo sapiens are re - U.S. House Reintroduces Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act to Protect Sharks from Cruel Finning
Apr 24, 2021 · original
This week on Earth Day, April 22nd, U.S. Representatives Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (I-MP) and Michael McCaul (R-TX) reintroduced the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. The bill, which is endorsed by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), would prohibit the sale, purchase, and possession of shark fins in the United States, helping to curb an inhumane global trade that claims the lives of 73 million sharks each year. Shark finning is a cruel practice that entails cutting off a shark’s fins — often while the shark is still alive — and throwing the mutilated body in the ocean, where the helplessly immobile shark will suffocate, bleed to death, or succumb to an attack by a predator. First introduced in 2016, the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives in late 2019 after ama - The Dangerous Rhetoric of Contemporary Animal Rights Law: A Review of Marek Muller’s Impersonating Animals

During my time at the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), I became aware of a schism between proponents of carceral vegan discourse—i.e., “hurt an animal, go to jail”— and a collaborative advocacy approach that moves beyond single-issue veganism. These tensions in the animal law field have led to unionization by ALDF staff and union busting efforts by ALDF management, a battle over the discursive elements of animal law communications, and continuing dialogue over whether standing up against injustice against humans, such as continuing police violence towards Black men and children, dilutes the message and success of animal rights rhetoric. Apr 11, 2021 · original
Where dogs roam free, they also suffer—and so do people. Dog homelessness (or overpopulation, depending on how the issue is framed) is a global problem with serious ramifications for both dog welfare and human public health. While big strides have been made to improve the situation in some places, the World Health Organization still estimates the global homeless dog population at over 200 million. Many organizations are now working to address dog homelessness, but their approaches vary, and real data about their effectiveness are hard to come by. This fragmentation and lack of data is what the Global Dog Campaign hopes to address. The campaign was launched by WellBeing International (WBI), a relatively new NGO with animal welfare veteran Dr. Andrew Rowan at the helm as President. With a number of talented experts on their team and a focus on the holistic well-being of animals, humans, an
