- What We Can Learn From the Barbie Movie Part 2
Sep 7, 2023 · original
Embracing the True Self Spoiler Alert – Some plot points are revealed. The Barbie movie comes at a pivotal time in our world. On an individual and collective level, we are facing important questions of identity, truthfulness, and values. These questions are at the core of both Barbie and Ken’s stories. During the movie, we witness a maturation journey towards self-acceptance and learning to value what is real about themselves. As a result of taking the journey, growth and transformation are possible. This movie depicts a path from the false self (Barbie Land) towards the True Self. Barbie and Ken go through a foundational change of perception and relating to themselves and the world. Having taken off the metaphorical pink colored glasses, they begin to see things they haven’t seen before. Ken sees a world where men are empowered and dominant (the patriarchy), and Barbie sees and apprecia - What We Can Learn From the Barbie Movie Part 1

Sp oiler alert – some plot points are revealed. I had no expectations and was even a bit skeptical going to see the Barbie movie, having personally never owned a Barbie doll. However, I was amazed at how Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach used humor, a clever script and a hero/heroine ’ s journey to address many issues we are facing today. It can be difficult to capture the nuances regarding issues of gender, inequality, consumerism, etc. without defaulting to black and white thinking. While the movie can be explored from various angles, in this two part series, I will focus on Barbie’s journey of self-discovery. Our Ideas of Happiness Can Trap Us Some writers have compared Barbie Land to the Garden of Eden – all is perfect, every day is the same, and everyone is happy. Until Stereotypical Barbie blurts out: “ Do you guys ever think about death?” This creates a crack in the pink façade and w - Navigating Obstacles

It is hard to believe that we are already in the 3rd month of 2023! How are your goals and intentions going so far? Research shows that people’s compliance to their goals and intentions drop off as the months go by. Why? Obstacles inevitably emerge. Call it “life” getting in the way, or more likely, we get in our own way. Our initial motivation can wane as these external and internal obstacles stack up. As a health/wellness and transformation coach, helping clients work through obstacles is a big part of my role. Read on for some pointers for how to navigate these roadblocks. Personally, I set an intention to increase my physical strength. Obstacles, in they form of injuries, have come up that prevented me from doing that so far. However, these obstacles have given me an opportunity to increase mental strength and emotional agility as I was given a lot of time to practice what I preach! - Is Self Care Selfish?

Is Self-Care Selfish? What comes to mind when you hear about self-care? Maybe it’s images of bubble baths and pedicures or a day at the spa? (Nothing wrong with those things!!) Perhaps it’s an inner knowing of when to say no and prioritize your sleep and health. There is a lot of confusion and even resistance to self-care because of a fear of being selfish or self-indulgent. However, I would argue that true self-care is a responsibility you have to yourself and all those in your life. I like what Parker Palmer has to say, “Self care is never a selfish act – it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” That gift is you. You can be a gift to others if your cup is full. As someone in my recent group-coaching program said, “No one thinks twice about the necessity to fill your car with gas. So why do we have to run out of gas to give - It’s Ok To Say No

I’ve observed over the years of working with clients and raising 3 children, that we all have an energy bank account that we draw on daily. We each have an average energy balance with a set point that is unique to the individual. Some people seem to have an endless capacity to go-go-go and others need more frequent recharge time. The holiday season produces a big extra demand on our energy account, and we can easily become depleted, grumpy, and/or sick if we don’t honor this delicate balance of energy input and energy output. All traditional health systems acknowledge the vital life force energy that animates us, breathes us and keeps us going as essential to our health. Bioenergy, Pneuma, Apu, Chi, prana, qi, are some of the words for this infinite, creative, intelligent source of life. Most of those words are related to the breath. The word ‘breathe’ comes from the Latin word “spiritus - Count Your Blessings

My father was out of a job for 9 months when we were a young family with six children. Somehow, we survived. I actually have good memories of extra time with my dad exploring nature and doing art projects. That Christmas we pulled together gifts to give to a family that was in greater need. I will never forget going to their apartment and coming home truly appreciative for our home, food on the table and my hand-me-down clothes. My mother frequently told us to “count our blessings.” When I worked as a nurse in large public and university hospitals, I counted my blessings daily as I witnessed how fragile health and life could be. The daily practice of gratitude has been thoroughly studied and proven over and over to have positive benefits . Benefits include improvements in: emotional, physical, and mental health, social life and relationships and in career. With gratitude practice we beco - Claim Your Crown! Owning Your Inner Queen

A dear friend has commented recently on the rare Instagram posts where I use a photo of myself with the word “Queen!” “Yas Queen”, “queen” or the crown emoji has become a popular way to express enthusiastic support or celebrate someone on social media. According to this article , “Yas queen” originated in the ball culture of the 1980’s. Balls are underground drag fashion competitions. Queen was once a slur for gay men, but the LGBT community, drag queen and ballroom scenes have embraced it as a sign of encouragement and term of endearment. “Yas queen” became “the ultimate compliment for performers” and went viral in recent years. With Queen Elizabeth II’s passing recently, coupled with this new (to me!) use of the word queen, I’ve been wondering what all this means. What does it mean to be a queen? I studied Jungian psychology for a few years and learned about archetypes as a kind of mod - Don’t Ignore the Messengers! Your Emotions are Your Guides

I was born into a big family, exactly in the middle. As a young child, I was sensitive, shy, stuttered and cried easily. Like a wolf pack who senses a weak link, I was “toughened” up – I was taught not to cry so much, defend myself, and develop a sense of humor used to deflect any teasing. I admit, this was probably a good survival strategy at the time! It won me a nice group of friends and I soon outgrew the stuttering and shyness but never the sensitivity. Fast forward to my mid-adult years where I experienced mounting stress and conflicts that went unaddressed. I was so used to stuffing my emotions down and avoiding conflict to keep the peace that I got to the point where I really didn’t know how I was feeling about anything. I became numb to myself. Emotions and Health Could this emotional suppression have contributed to my developing auto-immune illness? The field of psychoneuroimmu - How to Find Solid Ground

Are you having a hard time finding your footing or solid ground? You are not alone! Here are a few metaphors I’ve heard recently: “I feel like there is a slow earthquake beneath my feet; nothing is solid.” “I feel like the waves keep pummeling me and I come back up for air and keep getting pummeled.” “I’m feeling wobbly!” How do we find solid ground when there is so much uncertainty, fearful headlines, and a never-ending pandemic? We can enhance our feeling of safety and stability by working with the nervous system and energy system. This starts with intention. You can shift gears from auto-pilot reacting to choosing a response, by first wanting to create and experience something different. Our nervous system is constantly looking for signals of safety or danger and then responds with a protection/defense mechanism or safety. Let’s start there – we need to give our systems more signals o - 5 Important Resets for your Mind and Body

It’s a new year and many people are talking about doing a cleanse or a detox. Many of these programs entail fasting, juice cleanses, enema cleanses or perhaps Beyonce’s Lemonade Diet that became a popular rapid weight loss and detox remedy. I am not a fan of any of these to say the least as some can do more harm than good. I’ve seen people lose muscle mass, get really hangry, bloated or constipated. Who needs that?! The body has its own amazing detoxification system using the skin, liver, kidneys and the colon. Certain foods help to maximize these pathways that help the body eliminate toxins that include chemicals, pollutants, medications and other substances that accumulate. Quick Fix and Shock Appeal Many of us want a quick fix that rids our bodies of all the junk we’ve been consuming and then magically have the body we want and feel good. Most people really don’t want to change their
