Name: Conor Frantzen Role: Business Manager 1st ALE Season: 2026 Nationality: USA Q: Where are you coming from, and what’s your background? I’m coming to ALE after spending most of my career in expedition and adventure travel operations. Right after college, I worked at Overland Summers, first as a guide leading student trips in Colorado and California, and then year-round doing logistics planning, sales, marketing, and helping run the summer season. That was where I learned how much steady, behind-the-scenes work it takes to make complex programs run well. After that, I spent more than twelve years at Natural Habitat Adventures in a range of operational and leadership roles. During that time, the company went through a period of rapid growth, and my work focused on helping teams scale while keeping trip quality and the guest experience consistently high. Antarctica might look like a vast, empty expanse of ice, but it’s one of the most important scientific frontiers on Earth. ALE has been integral for the operation of many scientific pursuits every season, providing logistics , flights , housing , and support personnel to help streamline objectives and maintain the safest environment possible while conducting science in Antarctica. Below are two large science projects ALE supported this season, with some insight into the importance behind the outcomes. Beginning this season, Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE) and Mountain Equipment have developed a partnership to elevate ALE’s polar rental jacket program. ALE guests rely on these polar jackets to comfortably navigate the extreme environment in Antarctica , and the respectable history of Mountain Equipment in cold climates allowed for a worthy pairing. From Mountain Equipment: “For more than 60 years, Mountain Equipment has developed clothing and equipment trusted on the world’s toughest routes and in the harshest conditions. In the mountains, experience is earned day by day; it’s the same with our kit. Every season, every expedition, and every detail contribute to what we know—and what we craft. That experience is stitched into every product, so you can depend on it whether you’ve spent decades in the mountains or are just starting out. Where does experience get you? I’m joining the ALE team after a 36-year career at American Airlines. With a career in the airline industry, where are some of the places you’ve traveled? Travel is my passion. I’ve been very fortunate to experience many wonderful places and cultures. I’ve traveled throughout Europe, visiting 22 countries… so far. I look forward to adding several of The Balkan countries soon. In Central - In the Spotlight – Ty Smith

Name: Ty Smith Role: Marketing and Content Specialist 1st ALE Season: 2026 Nationality: USA Q: What brought you to ALE? I have been looking for a place to put my energy into doing good work and let me be a part of creating media I can be proud of. ALE checks those boxes and more, not to mention the people in the SLC Office are fantastic to work with! Q: What do you enjoy about marketing and content creation? Something about creating media that connects with people and is a video or picture that no one has seen before. I’ve enjoyed taking photos for a number of different events and nothing is ever a repeat. There is always something new and something to try. Q: Where have you traveled? Name: Mike Collier Role: Purchasing Specialist 1st ALE Season: 2026 Nationality: USA Q: What brought you to ALE? Antarctica…and then reviewing ALE’s website. My first though was “People get to do this every year? And it’s a job? And any you get paid?” It all sounded amazing and I immediately want to be a part of that adventure. Q: What do you enjoy about Procurement and Logistics? What I enjoy most about procurement and logistics is how fundamental they are to the way the world works. Almost everything we rely on—from food and medicine to technology and infrastructure—exists because complex exchanges of information resulted in sourced materials and moved them where they needed to go. My academic background is in economics, and I like observing how resources move through systems, the real-world mechanisms that make that movement possible. Aug 29, 2025 · original
Cross-country skiing played a key role in early Antarctic exploration: one aspect of Roald Amundsen ’s 1911 South Pole success involved cross-country skiing. Since then, skiing has become an established form of transportation for polar adventurers. The Antarctic Loppet honors this legacy, rewarding skiers willing to brave the unknown with jaw-dropping vistas, untouched snow, and stories that will last a lifetime. With constantly shifting weather, a 24-hour sun, and one of the most remote courses in the world, preparing for this race takes more than endurance, it takes smart planning and the spirit of an adventurer. We talked to Isobel Hendry, Kenn Borek Air Pilot and former Antarctic Loppet participant regarding her thoughts on the best way to train. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or aiming to ski in one of the world’s most unique courses, here are some training tips for this yea - Antarctica Expeditions

When legendary Sir Ernest Shackleton first dreamt of crossing the miles of frozen tundra to a lonely point on the map in the early 1900s, he couldn’t have imagined the hundreds of people who would follow in his footsteps. Incredibly cold, unforgiving, relentless miles on skis to reach the South Pole does not sound pleasant to most. Yet Antarctica expeditions have been increasing in popularity, and ALE has been at the forefront of logistics , communications, and transportation necessary for safe and well-executed journeys. To provide a snapshot of all that goes into expeditions, the vocabulary, and tips for better odds at completion, we sat down with Steve Jones, our Expeditions Manager, who has worked with 75% of all people who have ever skied to the South Pole . What are the commonly tried expedition routes in Antarctica, and any interesting variations? There are three popular routes fr
