- Collecting Antique Glassware, by Caitlin Kelly
Apr 21, 2022 · original
I guess it’s inevitable that at some point we all turn into our parents. I have, but in ways I really enjoy – by collecting art and antiques and using them daily. Only when I looked at an early black and white photograph of myself, taken in Toronto when I was maybe six or seven, did I notice a table filled with two antique decanters (with those engraved silver labels that say “gin” or “rum”) and three antique goblets, behind my father and me. A cut crystal pinwheel decanter with a silver gin label. Today, I have three 19 th -century decanters on a silver-plate tray – all found at antique stores or auction – and love how their faceted surfaces capture and refract candles and sunlight, something we see more and more of now ( yay! ) as spring approaches. I went slightly mad for one, having driven the four hours from my home in New York to an auction in New Hampshire, and spent an eye-wateri - A Cup of Tea with Guest Blogger Caitlin Kelly

Few drinks are as comforting and consoling as a cup of tea – watch any BBC television show, even the crime dramas, and someone is always putting the kettle on or offering a cuppa. On the coldest and greyest of Canadian winter days, a pot of fragrant tea offers a soothing break, maybe Earl Grey or Irish Breakfast to start, a hearty pot of PG Tips at 4:00, or the smelly, tarry, smoky flavor of Lapsang Souchong . Not to mention herbal tisanes, infusions and green tea, said to be health-promoting, like this Ginger-Turmeric Wellness Tea from the Great Canadian Tea Company. And while a sturdy mug is big and practical and warms both hands, I’m partial to using a vintage or antique delicate porcelain teacup, with a handle or an earlier, handle-less teabowl; teacup handles appeared in 1750, thanks to Robert Adam as holding a hot bowl was uncomfortable and too easy to drop. An array of colourful wool blankets can be found on the third floor of Antiques on Queen. As the days shorten mercilessly – sunset at 4:30!? – and the temperature plunges, there are few comforts more reliable than a stock of cozy wool blankets and throws. Whether a classic cream wool Hudson’s Bay point blanket, with its distinctive four stripes of red, yellow, green and dark blue, or a handsome woven tartan, a well-chosen vintage blanket, coverlet or throw can add warmth and style to any bedroom or sofa. I recently scored a pristine, queen-sized, blue and white home-spun coverlet in one of my favorite antique stores in suburban Maryland. I had no immediate use for it, but had so rarely even seen one, let alone in such immaculate condition, I bought it at once. When I left home, my mother gave me a vintage wool patchwork blanket I used for decades until it literally wore out. I loved wond - Merry and Bright: All About Christmas Brooches

If you read our last blog post ( if you haven’t, you can catch up here ), you’ll know that brooches have been around for centuries, and are currently enjoying a bit of a 21st century renaissance. But what about Christmas brooches? Although Christmas as a religious holiday has been celebrated for centuries, most of the imagery and traditions we now associate with the holiday originated much later. The modern idea of Christmas has its roots in the 1840s. It was during this period that Queen Victoria’s Germanic husband Price Albert introduced the Christmas tree to Britain, and in 1843 Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol, a story glamourising the holiday season that was based on the author’s fond memories of his own childhood. There were other contributing factors. The reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837-1901, encompassed the sudden and dramatic industrialisation of Britain and the We - The Cultural History of Brooches, by Caitlin Kelly

Brooches come in all shapes and sizes, and may be made out of precious stones and metals, or purely decorative. (Wenn/Keystone Press) Few civilians will ever get too close to Queen Elizabeth – beyond holding a stamp, bill or coin with her likeness. But those who can (as I did as a Globe and Mail reporter covering a Royal Tour) witness her at close range, also get the chance to admire her quite astonishing jewellery, like the brooch she wore to one evening event I covered --- whose central emerald was the size of a baby’s fist. Her Majesty is well known for her love of brooches, many of which she wears on specific occasions to send a subtle message, like the diamond maple leaf for visits to Canada, the Prince Albert brooch – a massive s - Introducing Our Guest Blogger: Caitlin Kelly
