  1. LLMs: The Autophagy of Capitalism
    Jun 7, 2026 · original
LLMs: The Autophagy of Capitalism In 2002, I imagined a company that would be at the same time an artificial, autonomous software-based entity, programmed to accumulate capital by any means necessary — which I named the Free Foundation ( freefoundation.org ). Open-source, built by volunteers, dressed up as a cultural foundation, it would in reality have pursued a single unspeakable goal: to become so powerful that it would drag capitalism down in its fall. A kind of ideological Trojan horse, open-source and smiling. I never found the time to work on building it. It seems that Large Language Models have taken care of that in my place. The 19th century committed a founding act, discreet and decisive: it granted purely abstract constructions — corporations — the status of persons. In France, they are called personnes morales ; in the United States, corporate personhood. These entities, conj

  3. Exhibition Etre Machine (Being Machine)
    Apr 20, 2026 · original
I am delighted to announce a new solo exhibition with Galerie Charlot in Paris, running from April 16 to July 6, 2026, exploring the concept of artificial beings through both recent and seminal works. For the past 30 years, I have placed these algorithmic entities, which reproduce fundamental equations of life in the form of computer programs, at the heart of many of my artistic creations. My aim is to question the nature of humans, which are first and foremost animals, which are first and foremost living beings. This exhibition offers me the opportunity to compare their artificial ways of being with our own ways of being alive. I look forward to seeing you there! 10000 Pistes ( 10000 Tracks ) – series Antoine Schmitt 2026 gold ink or white ink on black paper (240g) size : A3 Editions : each drawing is unique Generative drawing drawn with a UUNATEK drawing machine controlled by custom algorithm The 10000 Pistes ( 10000 Trails ) series is a series of unique plotter drawings, and each traced by an algorithm imitating the way animals traverse territories in nature. The sheet of paper is considered as a territory with an invisible topography, with mountains, plains or valleys, and each trail is made by an algorithmic animal crossing this landscape from one side to the other, following its desired direction, finding the easiest path. It avoids mountains and goes through valleys. Like in nature, it also tends to follow previous trails made by previous animals, ending up creating large and used trails. For each drawing, an invisible territory is created
  5. Behavioral Design
    Jan 13, 2026 · original
Behavioral design involves designing and crafting the behaviors of objects intended to interact with humans, so that these objects are perceived as more or less autonomous entities. This entails programming them using concepts from biology, psychology, ethology, behaviorism, and psychoanalysis to give them presence, identity, and a relationship to the world: an Umwelt (being-in-the-world). It’s about giving substance to an object’s being, from its perceptions using sensors (microphones, cameras, accelerometers, buttons, etc.) to its modes of expression through actuators (speakers, motors, lights, screens, etc.), all structured and driven by its internal being-in-the-world. This Umwelt can correspond to a function, for a functional object, or be purely fictional for an object without a particular use. Human beings, and animals, tend to readily project the quality of being onto seemingly i
  6. La Machine
    Jan 13, 2026 · original
2026 Smart Object The Machine, conceived by Olivier Mevel (of Dal and Nabaztag ), is a reinvention of the “ultimate machine” invented by Artificial Intelligence pioneer Marvin Minsky, which implements the minimal action of shutting down as soon as it is turned on. Ultimate… But it has its moods, it remembers you, it expresses itself, it gets bored, it gets annoyed, it wants to play, it has its internal states, it’s unpredictable. My mission, in collaboration with sound designer Tapetronic, the great system code master Paul Guyot, and under the watchful eye of Olivier Mevel, is to give The Machine an identity, a personality, a presence: an Umwelt. The challenge is to do this with a simple, one-dimensional actuator—the one that flips the switch. But it has many ways of doing so! And the temporal dimension is crucial. Work in progress!

Audio-Visual performance 2025 Franck Vigroux : live music Antoine Schmitt : live images Videopolis delves into an ever transforming urban landcape, in permament mutation. S ound and image combine to construct and deconstruct the profound architecture of their environment. Despite a floating and unstable phenomenology, a blurred and fuzzy perception, discordant and deceitful algorithms, the structure of reality persists in its being and resists, like a living organism. Videopolis takes us on an infinite tracking shot within this world saturated with images and sounds manipulated by invisible forces. This poses the question: how can we encounter Videopolis? 8. The Umwelt of programs
    Jul 7, 2025 · original
The Umwelt of programs In 1932, the biologist Jacob von Uexküll introduced the notion of Umwelt (1) to designate the modality of being in the world of an animal, its “self-centered world”: a tick will not see, will not live the world like a jellyfish, or a jellyfish like a human. The same reality of a moment will be experienced more or less radically differently by each of these individuals, by its senses, by its processes of interpretation, by its decision-making processes, by its actions, by its temporality, and this by the very nature of its being in the world, specific to his species. This variety of experiences begins with the senses: each entity will be differently sensitive to reality. Some are deaf (the snakes), others are blind (moles), others see ultraviolets (cats), others hear the ultrasound (the bats). The same situation experienced by two different entities will be perceive
  9. Malware attack and counterattack
    May 16, 2025 · original
This is the story of a phishing, of a hacking, of what I learned, and how I counterattacked The phishing It all started with an email from a journalist who wanted to interview me about my artistic work. The email was from a certain Eirik Halvorsen, coming on the behalf of an online art magazine, Artscope . This happens to me regularly, but this time, the email was so cleanly and formally written that I told my friends that it looked like it had been written by an AI. But it was polite, the magazine web site seemed professional so I nonetheless responded, and after a few email exchanges, we decided for a video interview (which I proposed myself). The day before, the journalist sent me the questions that he was going to ask me, and they were quite professional. The day of the interview, he sent me a link to do the video interview : https://lape.ai with a code to start the meeting. I got a
