  1. 2024 year in review
    Dec 29, 2024 · original
2024 was a roller coaster of a ride. In my last year’s post , I had a few themes that I wanted to spend my time on. Here’s a quick glance on how they turned out – Category – General Theme Status / Comments Sharpen writing skills This was harder than I thought. There isn’t a measure for writing. It either good or bad. When you write enough, you’d have built an intuition of that measure. I spent most year using bullet journal method to write day to day but not enough on long form writing (articles, reflections etc). The only other form of writing that I did was letter writing with some pen pals via snail mail. I will continue the focus in 2025. Find the balance with work, exercise and leisure Work life balance is a norm in Sweden, had no struggles there. But I am responsible for some lame efforts to find time to exercise. But finally I found some motivation and finally hit the gym in Decem
  2. 2023 reflections, 2024 things to come
    Jan 1, 2024 · original
Quote of the year “Focus on things you can control, ignore the rest” – The dichotomy of control – Stoics 2023, in my early 30s, it is the first year that I felt the effects of stability. I didn’t have to worry about stuff that I have been dealing on and off since I graduated (like moving houses, shaky finances, etc). There were minor hiccups, but nothing to loose sleep over. I couldn’t travel to new places as much I would have liked, but it’s alright. Can’t have it all. 2023 reflections An unfiltered chat with Lou about the role of Architects. A few snippets of my chat were featured in this video 3x meetups hosted at the local AWS user group 2x speaking at meetups (Stockholm and Oslo) Got US B1 visa! (4 years, 2 failed attempts and COVID delays later) Made it to the US twice – 1x for AWS hosted Riot games hospitality experience and 1x to AWS Reinvent 1x Speaking at Reinvent. The biggest
  3. Platform is the new Infra Ops?
    May 19, 2023 · original
Recently I met someone with heavy Infra Ops background at a conference. They made a comment – “We are going back to old ways of working, Platform is the new Ops team”. In that moment, I didn’t have anything to respond with. A cup of coffee and some leisure time later, I find this statement to be incorrect. Yes, in a way we bought back the times when development and infra teams were two different silos, but the operational models of Infra Ops and Platform are disjoint. A clear distinction between these is evident when you look at it from the lens of lifecycle management A platform team is responsible for the lifecycle of the underlying infra + developer tools, but never is responsible for the lifecycle of the application/s deployed on top of it. On the other hand, an Infra Ops team where always responsible for managing infra + all the apps on top of it. The amount of lifecycle management
  4. AWS Summit Stockholm 2023
    May 9, 2023 · original
My CFP was selected for the community booth lightening talk for AWS Summit Stockholm 2023. It was my second year in row at the community booth and I had a story to tell. This was a bit different than my usual talks. This wasn’t a deep dive into a service. This was rather a story of how an in house product was conjured from vague business requirements to a self service oriented IT interface for the technology consumers in the company. I had help from the AWS folks in making this presentation much better than it’s draft version. This presentation starts with a socio technological problem statement, moves on to some design considerations, explores a technical construct that can help solve the issue and moves quickly into the implementation details. I have a copy of the presentation available for your to look at if you are interested. Since this is a PDF, it looses the fun I had with funky a
  5. Architect’ing fast is the key, until its not…
    Nov 26, 2022 · original
Reflections of a new cloud architect In my 8+ years career as a developer, consultant and recently as Cloud Architect, I have worked with companies of all scales. I have had a taste of multi national corporate, mid size product companies and startups alike. All these places have had different set of challenges, but there was always a common theme I could see everywhere. Most of these challenges were rarely related to technical complexity. These mostly had developers struggling to understand what they were supposed to produce. The architects, product managers tried hard to be precise, but despite of all the efforts the result wasn’t any different. Looking at those scenario’s in retrospect with a trained brain; a brain that has gotten a little better at finding patterns over time, I found root cause for most of the misery pointed to one direction. Someone, somewhere in the organization dec
  6. A year in Sweden
    May 21, 2022 · original
About a year ago, on 16th May 2021, amidst heavy lockdown in India, I packed 25 kg of cloths, spices, assortment of itty bitty things in a suitcase and set off towards a new chapter in life. I had to apply for an e-pass from police to make this journey. All eCommerce and stores were closed. I could only bring things I had at hand in that moment. That marked beginning of a new phase in my life and career, working and living in Sweden. I had secured a job as Cloud Solutions Architect at Cybercom (which was later acquired by Knowit) in Gothenburg. A year has passed since and this is a reflection post. It has been a journey of exploration, leanings, milestones and patience. A lot has changed since. I am no longer a lone wolf and now working at a cool EV startup’ish company, Polestar. Moving to a new country is as good as building an entire new life. Adjusting to the new lifestyle, culture, r
  7. Reinventing yourself (in 2022)
    Jan 1, 2022 · original
In retrospect of last two years, I created an opinionated list meta skills that could help add little more meaning to our monotonous lives. #1 Ask for what you want. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. A few influencers have made this mainstream these days and I am happy they did. We always wait for that one chance, that one promotion, that new opportunity we deserve. We wait in eternity for it to show up. In most cases, it either doesn’t or comes too late after trading hands. The reason we don’t ask is due to the fear of failure. Through our education and culture, we are taught to repel failure. It is projected as an end, a bad thing., an omen. Most learning come from failing and reflecting on it (reflecting is important). Fear is evolutionary and we need it. Strengthen your mind to accept it as a stepping stone rather than a dead end. Eg. Want that promotion? Ask your boss/colle
  8. Book Review – Hell Yeah or No

The modern mind is over stimulated, the modern body under stimulated -Naval Ravikant Attention is the currency of today’s digital world. There are a lot of things that seek a piece of your attention, which has a limited quota. We are bombarded with tons of content. This adds a lot of noise to our life. Most of the time, we can’t seem to find our way out of it and hence can’t prioritize what really matters to us. This book tries to present you with ideas that can help you cut the noise and find meaningful things you really want to work on. What’s the book about? I interpret it as a group of ideas, thoughts and questions introduced to help you find – what’s worth doing, fixing faulty thinking and making things happen . It’s a distilled version of author’s private journal that he maintained over 10 years, a collection of questions and its answers, which he thought would be helpful to others
  9. Moving to Cloud
    May 29, 2021 · original
I wrote a twitter thread in December 2020 in an attempt to collate advice I had given to a bunch of people who were looking for a career transition to cloud. It was received relatively well. Its time to convert it into a blog post. Our default choice of cloud for this post would be AWS. This blog post is inspired from this tweet This post is indented for developers, system admins, DBA’s etc. already working in a professional setting. There is a different thread (which I will convert to a blog post soon) for recent graduates or for people looking to make a career switch. Having made that clear, let jump into the actual stuff. Trick 1 – Gain entry into the cloud from a familiar landscape You can do this by using a few services from cloud that you could potentially use at work. Use the cloud which is accessible to your at your workplace. If you don’t use cloud at work, start with AWS. Lets
  10. Breaking smartphone addiction
    Aug 20, 2020 · original
Things that “The Social Dilemma” missed in the documentary. The Social Dilemma is a great documentary that should have been published a few years ago. It’s a one of a kind film that focuses on the down sides and business model of the big social media corporations. It touches on quite a few questions around the why and the what of the social media addiction, but does a poor job on helping us with countermeasures to fight back the addiction. The countermeasures coming from the designers themselves would have done wonders in convincing people to take some actions. This is my humble attempt to cover a few tips that helped me take control of my social media addiction and in turn helped me less reliant on my smartphone. I am not the inventor of these ideas. I have merely collected these facts from a few books, articles, podcasts and documentaries I have watched over the years. At the end I wil
