- Climbing Pen-Y-Fan in memory of Lauren: Elaine’s inspiring fundraising journey
Apr 15, 2026 · original
On 28th March 2026, Elaine, alongside close family and friends, took on the challenge of climbing Pen-Y-Fan. More than just a walk, this was a deeply meaningful journey. One taken in memory of her daughter, Lauren. Together, they climbed with purpose, determination and love, raising an incredible £3,900 along the way. For us as a small charity, fundraising efforts like Elaine’s are truly invaluable. Behind every donation is the ability to reach someone who may be struggling, to offer support at the right moment, and to remind people that they are not alone. Postnatal depression can be an incredibly isolating experience. Many people suffer in silence, unsure of where to turn. Thanks to fundraising like this, we can continue working towards a future where no one has to face those challenges on their own. Elaine’s journey is also one of finding purpose through loss. We are enormously grateful to Elaine Cooke for her fundraising efforts for APNI in memory of her daughter Lauren. Elaine, joined by her family, friends and Tesco colleagues raised over £3800 for APNI. Elaine’s JustGiving page says: ‘On the 28th of March 2026 all of Lauren’s close family and friends will be walking up PEN-Y-FAN in memory of Lauren who sadly lost her battle with postnatal depression on 22/12/2024. We are hoping to raise £500 to donate to APNI, a charity that helps those who are suffering from postnatal depression. As Lauren loved walking and exploring, we thought doing this would be a perfect tribute to the most beautiful girl with the biggest heart.’ The post Elaine’s walk up Pen Y Fan in memory of Lauren Aldridge appeared first on APNI - Association for Post-Natal Illness | Post Natal Depression . - A Day of Connection and Collaboration
Feb 27, 2026 · original
On 11th February 2026, Alice and Yas attended the London Maternity and Midwifery Festival, a fantastic event bringing together professionals from across the maternal health community. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet doulas, midwives, health visitors, doctors, lecturers and many others dedicated to maternal care. We were delighted to hand out leaflets, make new connections and share more about the importance of support for postnatal depression, as well as the help our charity provides to families who need it. It was a truly inspiring day and a great chance to spread the word about the vital support available to parents. Feb 5, 2025 · original
In 1984 the organisation was joined by Mrs Diane Nehme. Diane quickly learned the work and became a popular member of the team. Diane worked with Sheila Hamblett who was the office manager. In 1991 the office moved to Jerdan Place, Sheila and Diane continued to work very happily together until Sheila’s untimely death in 1996. During 1996 Diane Nehme encouraged Dave Page, who was coaching staff members in the use of computers, to look into the possibility of setting up a web site specifically for the organisation. In 1998 Diane became Secretary of the charity and joined the Trustees. She took this role very seriously and attended all Committee meetings unless she was ill. She was recently involved in signing the Audited Accounts, yet another of her responsibilities as Secretary. Soon after the office moved to Dawes Road in 2001, Diane chose to work from home, and she did so until she died - October 2024 APNI Newsletter

Oct 23, 2024 · original
The Association for Post- Natal Illness (APNI) is very proud to be sponsoring the Award for Best Health Visitor at the CPHVA Conference this year. The Association for Post-natal Illness is a voluntary organisation that specialises in offering support, information and advice to women who suffer from post-natal depression . APNI recognises that Health Visitors can play a key role in recognising new mothers who are finding it increasingly difficult to cope. Health Visitors can gently encourage such women to seek medical help, from their GP, as well as from lay-support agencies such as Homestart and APNI. Early diagnosis of post-natal depression, plus support during the recovery phase, can shorten the illness, ensuring that the baby is minimally affected. A good Health Visitor is of inestimable value in early detection of post-natal depression, and in making sure that a sufferer seeks and re - Anna McCarthy’s Three Peaks in Three Days

We are incredibly grateful to Anna McCarthy who raised over £1600 for APNI. Anna, along with friends Claire, Grey and Matt have completed the Three Peaks in Three Days challenge. This challenge was in memory of Anna’s sister in law, Emma, who sadly passed away 12 years ago. Anna’s family and friends have been supporting APNI over the years and we cannot thank them enough for all the fundraising they have done. Anna’s JustGiving page states: “In 4 weeks time myself and some friends will be climbing three peaks in three days; Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. We are excited yet nervous… it won’t be easy, but nothing in life worth experiencing is easy, right?! Many of my friends have asked me if I am fundraising for this adventure which is so kind of you all…. So here I am, asking for your support. Some of you may know that I lost my sister in-law, 12 years ago, to an illness that isn’t - Pavan Bhardwaj’s Ultra White Collar Charity Boxing match
Aug 21, 2024 · original
We would like to say many thanks to Pavan for raising over £868 for APNI by participating at the Ultra White Collar Charity Boxing match held in Rochester on the 7th July 2024. Pavan wrote in his JustGiving page: I’d like to help generate funding for women who have suffered with post-natal illness. I have witnessed the suffering it causes first hand and this is a charity that is close to my heart. I will be boxing at the Casino Rooms, Rochester on the 7th July 2024. The fight will consist of 3 rounds, each lasting 2 minutes. Boxing is something I want to do for myself to push myself outside of my comfort zone. I want to use it as motivation for my training sessions. I would really appreciate any donations you can make. Thanks in advance. We are incredibly grateful to Kellie McCulloch who completed the Tough Mudder Challenge held at the Drunlanrig Castle and raised over £290 for APNI. Kellie wrote in her JustGiving page: I’ve made the last minute decision to complete Tough Mudder on Saturday 15th June. Not only do I want to do this for my own personal achievement, I’d like to get sponsors for The Association for Post-Natal Illness, a charity very close to my heart. We very much need to raise awareness of PND and how this affects everyone. For anyone who knows me knows this is massive for me as I am not into exercise but I want to smash it!!! Any money you can donate to this charity is very much appreciated, even if it’s a couple of pounds. What a great achievement and fundraising effort from Laura Best!. Laura accomplished the challenge and raised over £1090 on the 12th December, accompanied throughout every step by her husband Jamie. Laura and Jamie are both active members of the British Army and a number of their fellow soldiers joined the challenge during the day. We are incredibly grateful to Laura, Jamie and to everyone who participated. Laura wrote in her JustGiving page: I was diagnosed with Post Natal Depression (PND) 11 months after the birth of my 2nd child, Charlie. Just one month after starting in DRS BCT. Being a proud person, I really struggled to even make the phone call to the Healthcare Professional (which was about 6 months too late). Even after the diagnosis when the doctor suggested I should go down the route of anti-depressants, I saw this as a failure and it’s something I should be able to fight by my - October 2023 APNI Newsletter

We are truly grateful to Lisa and very impressed when she and her daughter Amy successfully took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in just over 12 hours on 30th September. Lisa raised £599 for APNI through her JustGiving page where she wrote: I am taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge to raise funds for APNI. This charity helped me when I was extremely ill with severe postnatal depression after the birth of my son Morgan, in 2005. Within weeks of his birth, I was sectioned and hospitalised for many months. Thereafter followed a long period of recovery, during which I received wonderful support from one of their volunteers, Alison. Being able to talk to another woman who had fully recovered from this debilitating illness gave me hope that I too would recover. And I did. We are very grateful to Heidi Martini-Smith who raised £396 for us by running the Burnham-on-sea Half Marathon on 8th October. Heidi wrote on her JustGiving page: In October, I’m running the Burnham-on-Sea half marathon and raising money from a charity that is close to my heart, The Association for Post Natal Illness. Their team of volunteers do such important work, providing support to anyone suffering from or affected by post-natal Illness including partners, family/friends, as well as striving to increase public awareness and research. Last time I did a half marathon I cried, A LOT, and had to get carried over the finish line… at the time I said never again. But with help from the Weston Whippets running group, I’ve come back for more. I’ll be fundraising for a great cause, as well as trying to reclaim my dignity! Sep 14, 2023 · original
We are very grateful to John and Marian McLaughlin who have recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. John and Marian are long-standing supporters of APNI. John wrote: On the first of September, my wife and I celebrated our golden wedding anniversary and with the help of our guests raised £280 for APNI. The story behind this is that following the birth of our third child, Marian suffered from post natal depression. Back in 1987 APNI was in its relative infancy, there was not any similar charity in Scotland; not even ‘Google’ to ask for advice. APNI aided us. Despite being hospitalised for a month, with God’s grace and the help of family and friends, the support of APNI and the medical profession, Marian made a full recovery. So to all your new clients we would say: there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our daughter is herself being married on October 13th. The post John and - Ashleigh Fisher’s MK Marathon

We are very grateful to Samantha Cook for the £1003 she fundraised by doing Half a Million Steps in June. Samantha wrote in her JustGiving page about her story and why she has chosen APNI: I’ve always wanted children, my daughter was planned and on September 24th 2010 I became a mother to my beautiful little girl! The best moment of my life! She is now 10, and if I knew then what I know now, it could have been a little easier! If there were more knowledge and support, I would never have ended up so poorly! Being a mum is the best job in the world, I adored my daughter from the second I found out I was pregnant. But even though I was so happy and I loved being a mummy more than anything, I began to feel nervous, I lost my appetite, I then started to feel scared, and by the time my daughter was 5 months old I was vomiting daily with extreme anxiety, I had lost nearly 5 stones, I was having - In Memory of Brenda Clarke
Aug 31, 2023 · original
APNI Chairman, Wilson Clarke, and family have set up a JustGiving page in memory of his mother Brenda who sadly passed away in February 2021. “Born on 5th August 1935 in Highbury, Islington, Brenda Jean was the younger of three girls. She met her sweetheart, Barry, after starting work at Midland Bank and went on to have three children of her own, who certainly kept her busy over the years. Brenda enjoyed life to the full, whether that be with her family and many grandchildren, or on plenty of holidays across the world. Sadly in 2017 Brenda was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and in 2019 moved into a care home, where she passed away on 2nd February this year. When our dear wife, mum, auntie, nana and friend passed away last month, after contracting Covid19, we wanted to choose a suitable charity instead of flowers in her memory. Brenda supported many charitable causes over the years but
