It’s been a remarkably productive month for the lab - mostly because I’ve been able to give it my essentially-undivided attention while I keep looking for new payroll work. A lot of that productivity has fallen into the writing department, but that doesn’t mean I’m not back to some of my old technical shenanigans now that I have the spare energy for it. The obvious highlight is putting out a Kickstarter for a new novella , but there’s plenty more under the cut. The Rise, the third novel of the Arcane Revolution Trilogy , is currently being promoted on Kickstarter to help me raise the funds for its final editing, production, and ongoing promotion. About a month ago I announced a new gaming project, Ecliptic Mariner: Diaries . Having had my fun with The Game for Scribes , and inspired by other games I enjoyed like Space Trader and Spirit City: Lofi Sessions , I set out to create a fun little TUI-ish, manual-driven game that was one part space trader, one part light productivity aid, and one part story-prompting journalling tool. Announcing Development on Ecliptic Mariner: Diaries!

Last night on our Writing Livestream , I announced that Arcana Labs was taking a forray back into software development with our first large gaming project: Ecliptic Mariner: Diaries . Inspired by a combination of my own frustration with not having a specific tool I wanted, and classic games of my childhood like the PalmOS’s Space Trader , EM:D will combine the economics simulation “space trucker” gameplay so common to the starship-captain genre with the environmental mood-setting and “pseudo-productivity” gameplay typified by games like Spirit City: Lofi Sessions . The original idea occured to me back in may, and I’ve been playing with a development plan for it ever since. With the way things have been unfolding lately, now seems like a great time to start pursuing it in earnest. New Short Fiction Zine “The Currie Mountain Repository” Released Today!

Today’s new short fic zine release, The Currie Mountain Repository , is the first entry in a series called “The Tales of the Voyageur”. The series is an environmental science fiction adventure, focusing on locations throughout the province of New Brunswick in a future which hopefully never comes to pass - one in which infrastructural collapse and anthropogenic ecological disaster has dramatically reorganized life, but in which there is hope to be found in the actions of humans and the societies they form in the wake of the disaster that once laid them low. In this issue, a Librarian discovers historical references to a very complete collection of pre-Devastation technologies, so they hire a Voyageur and a Reclaimer to travel to the site and excavate it. Given our sudden proliferation of free time, I’m able to make much faster progress with our Zines Page , in terms of getting new issues

As a general rule, I don’t talk much about my professional life on this blog - working in tech means the vast majority of what I do on a daily basis is wrapped up in enough layers of NDAs, Information Security Policies, and international regulatory language that even a lawyer would struggle to find the safe footing, and I have no delusions of being a lawyer. Today though, I’m going to break with that tradition in order to make a somewhat sad announcement. Yesterday, I was let go from a new position I had taken in the the spring without notice and without cause. With how busy I have been with the new job lately, and my increasing push to focus on projects and uses of time that remove annoyance, unfortunately today’s announcement is not a shiny new project (of which there are a few in the hopper), but instead infrastructural news . I know, it’s so sexy. In a move surprising nobody paying attention, I have decided to announce that Arcana Labs Projects are moving to Forgejo . There are many good reasons for making this move and honestly I’ve been looking for the liferaft off the back of the sinking ship that is Github for over a year now; according to ticktick, I registered the earliest late last year. In a move which more or less surprises nobody, I am retiring PETI , effective immediately. There are reasons for this that go past simple boredom with the project, but I know it’s something of a sad announcement, so let’s lay them out. The Project Has Run Out of “Interesting Unknowns” in Firmware Most of the PETI firmware is, at the time of writing, effectively implemented. While there are gameplay features that are still missing (sequential sounds, sickness, healing, death, to name a few), most of the truly interesting problems that needed solving in the game are solved now. If programming for PETI was an enjoyable experience, this wouldn’t be a problem, but unfortunately, writing the code for this project has become a real bear.
