I’ve attempted to log in to, or change my password for, LiveJournal several times in the last 15 years or so. It’s never worked right. My account url: artlung.livejournal.com Mostly all I used that site for was as a POSSE and PESOS target. I reposted my blog posts, and reposted summaries of my tweets there too. My understanding is that this site remains owned by an entity domiciled in the Russian Federation , and I suspect the things I’d want to say and write about would be unwanted by such an entity. About Ukraine, about the freedom to express ones sexuality as one wishes. Today I exported my posts, and pretty seamlessly, using a tool called Livejournal Export ( arty-name/livejournal-export ) I use the Python management tool uv as well as the GitHub command line tool gh so this was the sequence of command line commands that worked for me: gh repo clone arty-name/livejournal-export Cloni

Panorama from today. I enjoy riding waves quite a lot. I went to Ocean Beach. Kelly went to San Diego Design Week. I updated my avatar on lots of services. It was a bit easier to do because I have a list of places to update: my Elsewhere page. I also added it (still out of order and with duplicates) to my “PFP” page . I used to make sure I didn’t have any profile photo older than a year on the primary silos I use. It’s good to have something fresh. Ended the day walking Gwen home from daycare. And then dinner. Kelly made great Thai food. We enjoyed watching Patrick H. Willems ‘ latest video on Nebula , which is on the topic of the reappraisal of Interstellar . And now, I’m tired. Panorama from Pacific Beach Today Session in the water was “meh” today. When the session is dull I will sometimes muse on what words apply to it. “Desultory” came up a few times. Also I didn’t have an accurate definition of that word in my head. I think I meant something closer to “dismal” or “disappointing.” And now, about websites I’ve been looking at a lot of my old websites lately. I make a lot of sites! I forgot that I’d created a website enumerating Ventura County users groups back in 2008. In-person groups were already on the wane by then, and the site did not progress. I shut it down eventually. The pages that last are ones I hang off existing sites. I mentioned it the other day but I’m particularly proud of my new page which is an attempt to log all the metaphors for “AI” I have run across: I also reported an issue with my page on Tilde Club : tilde.club/~artlung/ . I updated gwenthegoblin.com with a backup of everything (from the beginning to May) using Memento Mori . Here’s the GitHub issue I participated in. I will be doing this again. I added to a page I started many months ago, with links to how AI is talked about and characterized. It’s my ‘AI’ is… page For a bodysurfer fins are vital. If I’m worrying about my fins, if they are too tight, too loose, it’s impossible to properly navigate the water. It would not be hyperbole to describe fins as “lifesaving equipment” for me. I go into turbulent water and fins allow me to behave not as a land mammal but as a sea mammal. I think of Burgess Meredith at the end of that Twilight Zone episode breaking his glasses. Elizabeth Holmes is in the news. In 2019 Alex Gibney released a documentary on what that company did and how it operated. It was called The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley . I watched it on HBO. I can remember the feeling of watching it. It made me angry. What follows is an adaptation of my tweets from the time, starting here . (Also, I need to add threading to my archived tweets) (In 2020) I’m finally watching the Theranos documentary. As a former clinician I find it incredibly upsetting. FIRST DO NO HARM. Officially: fins lost

The blue-with-white tips DaFin fins which I’ve had for several years are officially lost. I mentioned yesterday in Good News; Bad News that on a big wave both my fins came off. As is my habit, I returned to the same beach the day after to look and see if they’d washed up or been found. Alas, no. Someone did return a football and an umbrella under the main lifeguard tower And this hat was on a trashcan near the staircase I used And I found some beach toys I took in exchange for the fins the seaside took from me. And that’s my followup. I’ll be wearing a pair of Yucca fins next. I intend to document all the things I’ve lost at the beach. In brief: ‘ve lost two handplanes, a few fins–some of which I’ve gotten back, my phone several times (always gotten it back), etc. To go in the ocean is to risk! Onward! Good News; Bad News

Here’s what I texted to Kelly this morning after I went in the water: The good news is I learned I’m not allergic to bees, the bad news is I lost both fins in a very violent wave. The other good news is that I’m fine. I don’t like losing a fin. But I’ve lost fins before. Usually I get them back. Twice I’ve fully lost fins and gotten them back the day after. In another instance a week after. But after I lost them I got out of the water. And I looked to the sea. I scanned the water. I watched seaweed clumps in the water move. I imagined how my fins might be moving. I looked down and up and out and saw no fins. For twenty minutes I did this. Maybe 25. And nothing. Nothing washed up. And oh, the bee? Well, I walked back up the beach to where I came down the stairs to the beach. I walked right along the waterline. In my bare feet. A sharp pain was suddenly in the arch of my left foot. I picke

Forgive the pun. Who does this gull think they are? I’m checking the surf cameras on Surfline, and notice this gull in the way. Like–excuse me. Can you do your morning groom somewhere else please? Alas, birds will bird the way they want to bird. Yesterday I did maintenance on some even older parts of the websites I host. And I ended up reconnecting with someone I’ve not spoken to in years. I’ll leave it vague, but it’s great. I have some folks to invoice too, so that’s good. I do not mention enough that I can be hired to do practical web work. As in: you can hire me . I mean, if it works out. You would need to reach out to me and we could sort out what kind of work you’d need done. We went for a walk last night along Sunset Cliffs . It’s a gorgeous spot, often. That’s Swell

Like I do, very often, I went to Pacific Beach Today. Here’s the panoramic photo I took before I went in the water. Here’s the Bing maps rendition of the spot. How impossibly blue is that water? The current was strong. I had an instinct that the current was strong and north. That’s the state of the swell in the water of course, but that macro view of the water doesn’t necessarily apply to every spot. The ocean’s vastness means eddies and flows may not apply to every possible spot. But I decided to walk 3 blocks more to the south of the pier. For me, “south” means to the left in the images above. I walked into the water. I was out 30 yards and put on my fins and swam straight out. The current was proved strong, as I went straight out I was also pulled northward and within 4 minutes I was on the north side of the pier. Which was exactly what I intended. Today was really fun. The conversation at Front End Study Hall was rich. We discussed email, including a library I’ve yet to try called MJML which allows creating a unified file which compiles into html code which renders consistently in the many different mail programs. I’m not using it for my newsletter (yet?), but I may do so. For the moment I’m using Twig templates to make markdown, which I pasted into Buttondown . And I’ll do that again on Sunday night when I schedule Monday’s email. I didn’t hit the beach, but yesterday I did, and the water was fun. There’s big talk about three hurricanes to the south and west of us which are generating weather, wind, and surf. I am hoping it will result in good waves in the next few days.
