Blaugust wrap-up

I participated in Blaugust for the first time this year and wrote every day for 31 days ! I'm still surprised and proud of myself for doing it, and it's the most I've blogged in a long, long time. As you can see, though, I'm writing this post nearly three weeks after the end of August, so I have other things to say about the month long event. While I'm proud of myself for blogging every day, blogging every day also burned me out. The first part of Blaugust went well for me, as I had so many ideas for things to post. However, in the middle of the month, I ran out of ideas and struggled a LOT with keeping up. I spent most evenings stressing out over what to post the next day which didn't feel good to me. I want blogging to be an enjoyable activity and not an obligation. It didn't help that my contract job became really busy, so the last thing I wanted to do after spending a day staring at
Hobonichi 2027 preview exhibit!

This past Saturday, a couple friends and I went to the Paper Mouse in Newton, Massachusetts, to attend the Hobonichi 2027 Preview Exhibit . Only four stationery shops in the US and eight shops throughout the world held these exhibits, so I feel grateful that one of the locations was only a 35ish minute drive away from me! We arrived at the Paper Mouse at around 1pm and checked in at the shop to get our tickets to the event. We had to wait for our number to be called to enter the exhibit space, but thankfully it was a beautiful, sunny day with zero humidity! Even the tickets are cute! A new coffeeshop, Moments , opened just a few doors down from Paper Mouse and they gave Hobonichi Preview Exhibit attendees 20% off when showing an exhibit ticket, so we all bought delightful tiramisu lattes and sat outside, enjoying the weather. Usually I'd be posting a longer week in review here, but I'm so tired. The longer the month has gone, the more burned out I've gotten from blogging every day, so I'm unsure I'll participate in Blaugust next year. Most of my days this month have been me thinking "When am I going to blog? I need to write today's post and I really don't want to be at my computer right now", and it's pretty exhausting. I'm glad I kept these week in review posts going through the month of August, though, but they're really not my thing. I've tried writing these week in review posts over and over through the years, but honestly, it takes me awhile to get through books and I knit bigger projects, so my updates are pretty boring. I still want to blog, but this is not it. Keeping a /now page is more my speed, so I'll probably end up doing that instead. Once I take a little break after Blaugust is finished, of cou

Remember how I said yesterday I was going to write today's blog post in the morning? Did I do that? No. So here I am yet again, 7pm on Friday night, rushing to blog so I can relax on my couch and listen to podcasts. Why can't I make myself get up and blog in the mornings? I mean, I know the culprit and it is my phone, the device that sadly calls to me when I wake up in the morning, and even though I only check Mastodon and my RSS feeds when I wake up, it wastes enough time that I don't have time to blog before I work out and shower and eat and all the other important morning things I do. I need to change this. I truly need to stop going on my phone before bed as that affects my sleep, and going on it in the mornings as that affects my morning routine. I'm going to give this a try starting tonight. No phone in bed, Aubrey! Break the habit!

Every day I tell myself that I'll write first thing in the morning. Then, every evening I'm sitting here wondering, "Why haven't I written my Blaugust post yet?". I don't know, but I do know that I need to make a more conscious effort to write in the mornings. I'm over writing these posts at night when I don't really want to be on my computer. In the meantime, here's a picture of the bike path in the area I used to live. I used to take walks here almost every day, and I miss taking walks in a quiet wooded area. I need to find that again.
WIP Wednesday: Happy with my progress

I don't have much to write in regards to my work in progress today because, well, it's the same sweater I've been knitting all month! I'm very happy with the progress I've made on the Lillesol sweater this past week even though it doesn't look like I've gotten much done. I do see progress, though, if I compare it to the picture from last week: At some point I'll start another knitting project or I'll start a different crafting project altogether. I want to spin some more yarn but I'm actually out fiber, so that's been on hold until I buy more. Still, I'm happy with my progress.

I'm having another day where I feel like I can't catch up with everything I have to do. I haven't been sleeping the greatest recently and when I don't sleep well, it throws off the rest of my day. I at least got out for a walk today in the sunny, 80 degree, zero humidity late August day in New England and that made me happy. It's been one of those days where cooking dinner felt hard, but I got it together and ate my tofu and broccoli stir fry so I'm glad I made dinner instead of ordering takeout. I even washed my dishes and cleaned up the kitchen! I still have yet to write an entry for yesterday in my 5 year journal, but at this point I'll write yesterday's and today's before I go to bed tonight to catch up with it. For now, though, I'll put on a Big Brother podcast, work on my sweater, and read a chapter or two of The Spellshop before I go to bed. Hopefully I'll sleep well tonight and g

It's almost 10pm and I'm finally sitting down to write today's blog post, which will just be me saying I'll be writing a longer entry tomorrow. Blaugust is really hard but again, like NaNoWriMo, some days are writing days and other days it's good to get just a few words down, so today's one of those latter days. I went to knit night tonight and sat outside and drank a tasty juicy IPA and chatted with my friends, so life is good. Time for bed.

This has been a week , seriously. I feel like I've been playing catch up all week, especially with my blog posts, so I'm hoping I can do a better job of actually writing posts next week. Making No new updates on my Lillesol sweater , just continuing on with the body! At some point this update will change, but today is not that day. Watching I'm still watching Big Brother 28 and season 20 of Married at First Sight. Nothing else to say about my TV watching this week. Reading I'm still reading The Spellshop and it's the perfect book to read before bed. Magic spells and jam and baked goods? Yes, this is nice and cozy. And... I FINALLY finished The Lion Women of Tehran ! I loved the beginning, thought the middle was only okay, and loved the conclusion. I'm just glad I finished after not reading it at all for a few weeks. Another short post today, a picture of miniprints from Inciardi Prints vending machines in Boston. I particularly love the lobster print (I'm Massachusetts born and raised so of course I love lobster) and the print of the Charles, because I've kayaked on the Charles around that exact spot! I have more prints but haven't taken a picture of them all just yet.

...and I feel weird about it sometimes. I deleted my Facebook account (for, like, the third or fourth time) a couple years ago, deleted my Twitter account, have never even watched anything on Tiktok, and while I still have an Instagram account, I don't use it and don't have the app on my phone. I'm 100% happy with my choices and am super happy with Mastodon as essentially the only social media I use, but sometimes I feel out of place with my peers. I have no idea what recipes are viral on Tiktok. I know nothing about the ads people see on Instagram. There've been a few times where I've missed news stories that everyone seemed to know about and I didn't, because apparently some of these stories were all over Instagram and Tiktok. (Related, I probably need to find a news source that isn't terrible!) I feel a weird kind of FOMO sometimes when everyone I know posts on Instagram and I don't,

Welcome to Work in Progress (WIP) Wednesday, where I post progress on my crafty endeavors! I want to get back to tracking my knitting, spinning, cross-stitch, or whatever I'm making at the moment, so I'll be writing about it every Wednesday. This will be a short post due to the fact that this update isn't the most interesting, but I'm still trucking along on my Lillesol sweater . I'm still on the body, which never seems to be done until the day it IS done, but I still have awhile before that happens. I now have to take sweater pictures on my coffee table, so progress IS being made! I'm still enjoying knitting this pattern, though, and that's all that matters. I can't wait to wear this sweater this fall.

A little over a month ago I traveled to Asheville, North Carolina for a conference. I flew in a couple days before the conference began, and I spent an afternoon checking out a couple breweries I hadn't tried. I enjoyed these two breweries in particular and would totally visit them both again! I first traveled to the Green Man Brewery after reading some great reviews. I ended up ordering a pint of Nerd Nectar, a hazy IPA that hit the spot on a hot summer day. I was the only person out on this deck. It was lovely. I thought the taps looked cool so I had to take a picture of them. I then walked a little way up the street to the Wicked Weed Funkatorium , an offshoot of Wicked Weed Brewing specializing in funky, sour beers! My 2027 planner: Hobonichi or Travelers Notebook?

For the past 6 years, I've been using Hobonichi planners to keep my personal life organized. I started by using an A6 Techo as my planner in 2021 and 2022, and switched to a Hobonichi Weeks starting in 2023. I love my Weeks, but I'm considering making a change for 2027. I don't remember when I first heard about Traveler's Notebooks . I remember seeing them in stationery stores I've gone to but I remember not quite understanding the point and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of paper options for this particular planner system. This past year, however, I started hearing more about them and how people use them, either by reading blog posts or watching Youtube videos of people flipping through their setups. Happy Sunday, everyone! I've had a pretty busy week this week with knit night, D&D, and the Analog Tools meetup . I'm always happy to be connecting with people, whether it be in person (knit night), or online (D&D and Analog Tools). I'm grateful to share interests with so many cool people and I'm glad I've found these groups! On to this week's recap! Making I'm still working on the Lillesol sweater and I'm still happy with my progress . I'm at the boring part of this sweater where I just knit round and round until I get to the bottom, then I'll pick up stitches for the neckline and sleeves. And then it will be round and round and round again! Watching I'm still watching Big Brother 28 and still listening to all the podcasts. It takes up a lot of time but I find it utter fascinating. As I wrote earlier in the month , I've been blogging for over 25 years. Most of my blogging has been through an administrative interface in whatever platform I was using at time, whether it was Wordpress or Drupal or Moveable Type. However, since moving to using a static site generator with no admin interface, I've written posts in a different way. It's taken me a few years to iron down my process, but here's how I write posts from Obsidian to VSCodium to my live site. Let's dig in! First, I create a new note in Obsidian in the Blog category, under Blog posts . I also have a Blog templates folder within Blog , and that's where I keep my Frontmatter template for my posts. I only wish the rest of my Obsidian setup was organized! I use the Templater Obsidian plugin to insert the Frontmatter into each post, saving me time copying and pasting the same Frontmatter over and over again. I'll som

I went to the Tree House Brewery location in Deerfield, MA a couple months ago and it's one of my favorite places. I love the decor of this particular Tree House, with beer cans adorning the hallways from the entrance to the main dining area. (A longer post will come tomorrow. It's been a long week.)

One thing I've realized about blogging every day is that I want to work on my website again too. I came across James's 100 things to do on your personal website (and other posts that he links to that list even more suggestions!) and even though I've been keeping a blog for over 25 years, I still want to add more things to this site, tweak the layout and how content is displayed, and so on. Things I want to do on my site, from James's post: Add a 'not by AI' button. Add 88x31 buttons in general! Finally get prism.js working so I can post code snippets on my blog. Make a 404 page. Write an accessibility statement. Things I want to do on my site in general: Clean up my speaking page. Put a link to my archives in the top navigation.
