    It s wild to me how time passes, and that the 9/11 attacks took place 25 years ago. Though I didn t know anyone involved, thankfully, in the attacks themselves, like every American alive at the time, it s a day I won t ever forget. The passage of time leaves just a few points in my mind but I felt it s worth sharing since we all have our own experiences I was working at a web development company in Tallahassee, FL at the time while going to college. I would normally work 30 hours a week and then squeeze classes in-between. On that day, I remember being at my desk, chatting with a friend on ICQ. We were both news junkies and would chat about the days headlines, and I distinctly remember seeing a Yahoo News brief post, probably from the AP, with a small blurb about A plane appears to have crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center .   2. Blaugust 2026 Thoughts

    Somehow, and against all odds, I managed to complete Blaugust 2026. I started this on a whim, joining Aubrey on the challenge and not quite sure how I would do. But thanks to some routine setting, advanced planning and just sheer laziness at times with photo only posts, I managed to take this blog from having barely 10 posts, to one a day for 31 days. I learned along the way that sometimes just having an empty prompt, to write something quick, is a good motivator. There were days where it felt like a chore, or that I wasn t sure what to write about, but like when I used to write a lot more regularly, the empty box of Micro.blog s New Post page opened up to me and I managed to always find the words. That being said, I don t know if I ll have it in me to attempt this again next year - a challenge is a challenge after all, and I managed to complete it, so doing it again doesn t really prove

    Since 2008, I ve been primarily a Drupal developer, focused on the front end and site building side of things. I love Drupal, even if I don t always agree with the direction the software itself is going. What matters more to me than the software though, is the Drupal community itself. When I first got into Drupal, the guy I was working with at the time told me about a local meetup, and a statewide event for Drupal. I attended the Meetup and met some great people, a couple of whom, even 18 years later, I still see regularly at our every-other-month meetups. Software doesn t live in a vaccuum, it is made by people , and the community behind it is incredibly important.     With the end of summer approaching for most of us in the Northern hemisphere, I wanted to share one of my favorite things about summer (and living in Florida): the beach Every year I go with my family to Anna Maria Island, a beach town near Bradenton/Sarasota here in Florida. It s a small island, connected by a few bridges but it s mostly for families and in the know Floridians (people who live in Florida don t usually go to the same beaches as most people visiting Florida do, at least in my experience). The water every year is crystal clear and warm when I go in July, usually about 88ºF (31º C) most days, rain is scarce and passes through quick and of course the beaches are white sand. It s one of my favorite places on Earth, bar none. And of course, it s impossible to beat a good Florida beach sunset.

    Tomorrow is the start of another season of college football. This time of year always reminds me of Fall, of shorter days and cooler nights and of course, making your Saturdays revolve around game time. As most people who grew up in the South can attest, football is a way of life . Growing up in Tallahassee (home of Florida State and the Seminoles), I happened to really come of age when Florida State was not just good, but very very good. I really started paying attention to football around 10-12 or so. I never played myself but my parents had season tickets to FSU games and I would spend many Saturdays with my grandparents (occasionally attending myself), watching on TV, my parents returning later in the evening after attending a game. In the 90s, Florida State was coached by Bobby Bowden, one of the greatest coaches of all time and (debatably) the winningest Division 1 coach ever. He t

    I have a weird affinity to keeping streaks going with apps and games and other things. I don t know what it is about it, maybe it s because I m very routine oriented and just like consistency of things, but keeping up streaks is just something that is part of my day. Sure, it s a bit silly (like getting karma on Reddit, fake internet points ) but that little dopamine rush of completing a task and keeping a streak going is probably why so many things are gamified these days. It s nice to have the routine and familiarity of it, always setting aside a few minutes here or there to keep a streak going, or at least I think so (your mileage may vary) So I figured I d share some of the (pointless, ridiculous) streaks I currently have going.     People are a bit shocked when I tell them that I get up every day at 4am. In an industry that is known for late night coding sessions and then starting the day at 12pm, I feel like I m a bit of an outlier for sure. But I enjoy waking up as early as I do, starting the day the way I d like to. I ve never been someone who needs a lot of sleep, from as long as I can remember. On a normal day, 5-6 hours is all I really need to feel energized and refreshed for the day. Back when I was a teenager, I was also never the type to sleep in much, partially because my parents didn t want me sleeping the day away but also because I felt…gross I guess, if I slept past say, 10am, even if I went to bed very late at night.     While driving to the celebration of life this past weekend, I always take state roads from Tampa to Tallahassee. Typically less chance of accidents and though you have to slow down through the small towns a bit, it s normally pretty smooth sailing. I ve been taking this route for 20+ years now, from when I moved to Tampa from Tallahassee and it s interesting watching things change. I really only make the trip a few times a year but the towns I pass through are always the same - Crystal River, Chiefland, Cross City, Perry, and some other tiny towns like Otter Creek and Usher and ones like that. Most are pretty sparsely populated, with varying degrees of signs of life and economic fortune or disaster. Some, like Crystal River, have really grown and thrived in the past 5 years or so, as more people transplant to Florida and that s lead to a lot of growth in terms of business and economic de

    I was out of town this past weekend, for a celebration of life for my grandmother who passed away back in mid July. I grew up in Tallahassee, FL which is where she was when she passed, so it was a quick weekend trip of arriving late Friday night and getting back home mid afternoon yesterday. At the celebration of life, my grandmother had asked that her four grandsons would speak. Two of my cousins were not able to attend, so my Uncle read their prepared remarks for them, and then my brother spoke and then I did. I ve never had to deliver a eulogy before, and despite all of my experiences as a writer, this one was tough. Eulogies occupy a weird space I think - you want to say nice things, but of course no one is ever perfect in their life. The goal is to share good memories and celebrate the person, but it s hard to sometimes look past their relationships with other people. And with my gr

    Since switching to Apple Music from Spotify , I ve started totally fresh with what they recommend. This is helpful because it s a clean slate, but it also makes it hard to discover stuff that you might like based on your preferences. A clean slate is nice but I still need to have somewhere to start if I m going to jump into music fresh. I like a lot of indie rock, mostly leaning more towards indie pop, but I m open to most styles of music in general (except 99.999999% of country) Anyway, I was browsing the new releases in indie and came across American Football, a band that I ve never heard before. On their newest album, American Football (Lp4) , they seem to mix some excellent backing sound with a bit of rock, a bit more orchestral sound and great song writing that is somewhat muted behind the music.     In response to a birthday wish blog post by Michael Klamerus , I’m going to talk about an obscure game from when I was a kid - Operation Inner Space! I played this game at least a dozen times at a friends house back in the early 90s. It originally ran on Windows 3.1 and was a total blast to play. The premise of the game is that you are “inside” your computer. After a long intro screen where your space ship is “transported” into your computer. You choose the drive you want to play on (yes, back when you had a C, D or E drive) a you then float around in space, similar to Asteroids, blasting random space junk but also at random intervals actual files on your computer. Shooting an icon is fun, but blasting a .exe or .dll file? That’s the best! But the thing that actually really made me remember this game were the ships themselves.     When I - somewhat impulsively - decided to attempt Blaugust, thanks to an idea from the always amazing Aubrey (gotta love alliteration), I wasn t really sure how much I would actually do. I ve had this blog for ~3 years now and had written approximately 8 times before that. How on Earth would I be able to post once a day for a month? I actually fell into tech originally as a way to pay the bills, but went to school for writing, graduating from Florida State (Go Noles!) with a degree in English. I always loved writing, as a kid and throughout school, and though I knew I wasn t going to be a writer professionally, it was great to flex that muscle and get better at it. And besides, back in the early 2000s, you just needed the degree to get a job, not always what the degree was IN. Around that same time, I actually had a personal site where I WOULD blog once a day.     I recently read an article about a new app called EasyDMG, that solves a huge annoyance when working on a Mac and installing something from outside of the App Store - the .DMG Basically the process is: Download the .dmg file Open it and drag the file to your applications folder Close the DMG window “Eject” the DMG Not the worst thing in the world but a stupid song and dance that isn’t needed for sure. That’s why EasyDMG sounded pretty great - it takes over the opening of .dmg files and just extracts the files and none of steps 2-4 are needed. Annoyance solved! Then I went to the EasyDMG website and got that same sinking feeling I get more and more these days - the site was clearly AI vibe coded.     I don t really collect a lot of things, but one thing that I do collect is soccer scarves. Even though I live in Florida and don t exactly have many reason to wear them (though if I go to a match I try to bring one if the team is playing), I love the colors of clubs from around the world and the creativity shown in the scarves. If I go to a match with a team I haven t seen play before, typically a home match, I try my best to find a scarf to add to my collection, which is up to about 21 as of this writing. And for some of the European teams, these are just clubs I follow/support and so they were procured online (but I hope to make it to their matches at some point!) As this is in my office, they always make for a colorful Zoom background and a conversation piece while waiting for meetings to start.     Do you ever have a dream where you wake up and some fact or thing just keeps rattling around your brain and when you wake up, you are convinced it s either totally true or the best (or worst) thing in the world and you just have to do something about it? Yeah that happened to me last night. When I woke up, I had the phrase Curly Brace Face stuck in my head. In my half awake/half asleep state, I was trying to decide if that phrase would be the name of a nerdy indie pop band, or some sort of front end super villain and can t quite decide. I think it could work either way and now I can t get the phrase out of my head even though it s really dumb and pointless but yep, my brain glommed onto it. Hopefully writing it out will kick it out of my brain, like the way of getting a song lyric out of your head is to just listen to the song.     I ve lived in Florida my whole life (other than a brief 3 months stint in New Jersey for a work thing). And while this state has many great qualities, and many not so great qualities cough our entire state government especially the Governor *cough , the one constant has always been the heat and humidity. If you live here, you re used to it of course - the 82 degrees at 5am and how stepping outside any day from late April to early November feels like walking into a bathtub. But the last few years, to the surprise of no one, climate change has made things much worse. Tampa (where I live) had never before recorded an actual temperature day of 100 degrees or higher, yet we broke that record two years ago, and now it s fairly common to get days like that, or at least days where the heat index is well into the triple digits.     As I m a cat person, I figured that sharing a pic and some info about my four cats might be something that folks enjoy (the internet does love cats after all). Bisque (5 years old) I originally intended to just get Bisque from the Humane Society because at the time my son wanted an orange boy cat but Elton John ended up coming home as well when he came up to me in the kitten room and flopped over, basically saying take me home. Despite his pretty appearance, Bisque is, in a word, an asshole. He bonded with me (instead of my son) pretty quickly and I m his person without a doubt. With everyone else, including the other cats (especially Tina Turner) he can be mean and nasty, and isn t above biting or scratching even me.     Back in June, I traveled with my family to Atlanta to attend a World Cup game. FIFA is, without a doubt, one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet. But as a soccer fan, the World Cup is a huge deal and is always enjoyable. So, I set my morals briefly aside and secured 4 tickets (for me, my dad, my son and my brother) as this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend. Rather than go through the entire shitty FIFA ticketing process, once the dates and venues for the games were announced, I bought my tickets blind through Stub Hub. I had no idea where my exact seats were, and certainly no idea on who the teams were going to be, but since I knew how much a hassle getting tickets were going to be, I figured that ANY game at the World Cup is better than none, and I knew I would regret it if I didn t go.
