- Autumn Day
Sep 21, 2026 · original
Lord: it is time. The summer was immense. Lay your shadow on the sundials and let loose the wind in the fields. Bid the last fruits to be full; give them another two more southerly days, press them to ripeness, and chase the last sweetness into the heavy wine. Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore. Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time, will stay up, read, write long letters, and wander the avenues, up and down, restlessly, while the leaves are blowing. Autumn Day by Rainer Maria Rilke - The Other Side

Now that the dust is settling from last weekend’s AI freakout, we are hearing from opposing voices. From my vantage point, I think there are good points on both sides and regardless of whether some of the more breathless predictions of doom may be off, we need more oversight and regulation. Our government just isn’t keeping up on this issue. - Still in Error

One of my favorite bands in the early 90s was Nothing Painted Blue, an indie rocker s indie rock band. Fronted by the hyperliterate Franklin Bruno, Nothing Painted Blue had a clear advantage in the lyrics department. Bruno could be clever, erudite, and wry. Lyrics like, you say you ll pray for my soul, you re more like Senator Dole, from the song Vengeful as Hell, sung in Bruno s matter-of-fact voice, still makes me chuckle. Bruno s new band, The Human Hearts, has a video for the single Still in Error. In it, Bruno makes a midlife attempt to learn to ride a bike. His lyrics are still sharp, and he still manages to jam complex words into a simple indie pop song. I try to use the right knife Try to choose the right wine, And conduct myself in an inconspicuous manner The jangle goes well as a soundtrack to suburban cycling. You ll have to watch to the end to see if Bruno meets his goal. The - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/19/i-dont-remember-how-i.html

I ve gotten myself in a confused state with regard to my RSS and social media feeds. I m using Reeder, which allows you to follow RSS, Mastodon, Bluesky and Micro.blog feeds. I m following all four of those in a jumble. I m also using Indigo, which can follow Bluesky and Mastodon feeds. I like the native experience, so I m using the Bluesky app and site. I also use the Micro.blog app and site. All this means I see posts multiple times. Since I m only really using one RSS reader (Reeder), disentangling from this mess will mostly mean being more deliberate about my social media following. I ll have to unwind where I m following what people, which could take a while. - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/15/matt-birchler-just-released-an.html

Matt Birchler just released an Obsdian theme called Bircharoo and it s quite well done. Nice little touches like some animation and Phosphor icons. Worth a look if you use the PKM app. - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/15/black-marble-kings-more-pics.html

I just read Dario Amodei s convincing We Must Pace the Frontier . Much has to go right in his plans to create measurable effect, and with our current administration against policing AI companies for fear of giving China an advantage, I m less than optimistic. Good thing I read this piece by Cal Newport to dampen the effect of the rhetoric and balance things out. - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/13/im-in-agreement-with-manton.html

I m in agreement with @manton . I think Dario Amodei and Sam Altman agreeing to pace the frontier is a big step and also a necessary one if anything is going to change. - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/13/this-guy-was-taking-a.html

As someone born in the mid-seventies, I almost entered this world with a predisposition to like Sylvie, the project of Ben Schwab (Golden Daze, Drugdealer). The band was inspired by finding tape reels recorded by Schwab s father John and his band Mad Anthony in a barn in 1975. Rina is the first track available from the upcoming New Season , Sylvie s debut for Ghostly International. It s a cover of his father s song from the Mad Anthony sessions. 1 It wouldn t be difficult to convince someone that this was recorded in the same decade in which it was written. Smooth pedal steel combined with glorious arrangements provide potent reminders of some of the best music from that period. Sylvie - Rina (feat. Alex Amen) ( Bandcamp ) New Season is out 11/6 on Ghostly International. Stereogum has the original version of the song for comparison. ↩︎ - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/11/since-there-is-a-nontrivial.html

Since there is a non-trivial chance that humanity will be wiped out by the end of the decade, I might as well splurge on these floral-accented Dia De Los Muertos Vans shoes. - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/10/charles-homans-takes-a-different.html

Charles Homans takes a different perspective on the changes brought about by 9/11. In fact, he argues that much of the changes we attribute to the attacks we actually brought about by technology. These artifacts span the pre- and post-9/11 years, and the lost innocence they represent has nothing to do with the attacks. Their interest comes from their evocation of a period when people hung out with friends in person and sweated alongside strangers at clubs and music festivals; teenagers goofed un-self-consciously for cameras rather than posing for them like jaded celebrities; and popular culture could be loud and dumb and not picked apart in the digital panopticon for its social politics. The shape that looms ominously over them isn’t the Twin Towers. It’s the iPhone. It s taken for granted that things really changed after the September 11th attacks, and it s measurably true. But how much - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/10/sean-hollister-from-the-verge.html

Cal Newport believes much of the fearmongering that is done by tech executives in the A.I. space is due to their backgrounds in Rationalism and related philosophies. This reality, that Rationalism deeply influenced many of today’s major A.I. companies, helps us calibrate the unnerving language we’ve been hearing from their leaders. When Mr. Altman declares their pending models will be “sobering” for humanity or Mr. Amodei frets that this technology “will test who we are as a species,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that they discovered frightening new evidence that something catastrophic is imminent. I listened to Newport expand upon this theory on the Not Dead Yet podcast. He s got a convincing argument that the Rationalist movement has so strongly influenced these executives that they are simply parroting its talking points. He points out that tech execs who don t come from those backgrou - https://www.canneddragons.net/2026/09/07/finished-reading-the-nineties-a.html

I like Bluesky but this about sums it up. Click on the link and what you get is not actually people posting their Labor Day plans but people asking how you can possibly enjoy a hot dog when you should be protesting the Trump administration.
