In May, I attended RustWeek in Utrecht. This was my first time at a conference outside of iOS/Swift development, and except for try! Swift Tokyo , it was the biggest conference I’ve been to. Someone said there were around 800 attendees, which sounds plausible. The conference had three parallel talk tracks, and you could easily switch tracks between each talk. Everything ran impressively on schedule so it was easy to switch rooms. I’m fairly new to Rust so some of the more technical details in talks were harder for me to follow, but it was great learning about Rust and the Rust community. There were enough general talks that someone who never worked with Rust could probably find the two days useful treating this as a general software development conference. Since I went into the conference knowing nobody, I would have appreciated more structure in place to help with meeting people. Of cou

I love reading, and I’m so pleased I’ve made it more of a habit in recent years. In 2025, I read 50% more books than in 2024, which was itself way up on previous years. This post follows a similar format to my 2024 books retrospective : I’ll first look at trends related to my reading, and then share some picks. Continuing trends I didn’t change direction, but I kept the trajectory I was on in 2024. My ways of reading have become more established. More time for books by cutting out news In July, I was lucky enough to spend three fabulous weeks in Norway, with Mediterranean temperatures at times. In 2024, I read about as many books as in the three preceding years combined. This is a post in two parts. The first part is about trends in my reading habits that helped me to read so much more and a complaint about big companies. Jump ahead if you just want to check out my favourite books from last year. Reading trends What helped me settle into a habit of reading such that I tripled the number of books I made it through? Adding audiobooks The biggest contributor to reading a lot more was consistently having an audiobook in progress. This listening time used to go towards podcasts, mostly while driving. Podcasts are nice, and I still listen to them a fair amount — for example, while cooking. I like having the choice of whether I want to listen to something more or less involved.
