Finished Listening to…: The Odyssey by Homer 📚 Claire Danes did a great job narrating. Once I got past the first few hours of introduction, which were very informative, the book flew. Emily Wilson s translation was very accessible and fun to listen to. If you are interested in listening to The Odyssey, too, I recommend this version . Going to watch the movie next. Wilson’s language is fresh, unpretentious and lean…It is rare to find a translation that is at once so effortlessly easy to read and so rigorously considered. —Madeline Miller, author of Circe - Back to Basics

After trying Traveler’s Notebooks, Midori, Plotter, and Leuchtturm, I keep coming back to pocket notebooks because they are always with me. That led me back to Field Notes, an old family-worn cover, and my first ever seasonal subscription. - September 11, 2001 - 25 Years Later

I can t believe it has been 25 years! I had just graduated from college in May of 2001 and was still looking for a job. That morning, I was asleep at my parents house when my girlfriend at the time, now my wife, called to ask if I had heard anything about a plane crashing into a building. I told her no and immediately turned on the TV. Smoke was pouring out of the upper floors of the North Tower. I watched as the news anchors tried to make sense of what had just happened. Was it a small plane? A terrible accident? Nobody knew yet. Then, a little while later, a second plane came in low and hit the South Tower. That is when everything changed. The first one could have been an accident. The second one meant we were under attack. That was the feeling, collectively, from what I remember. I think the country s innocence, as we knew it, ended that morning. My wife was working at a local mall an - "There Will Come Soft Rains"

Finished Listening to…: The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet by John Green 📚 This book wasn’t even on my radar until I had to order it for my daughter’s summer reading assignment. It is definitely a stark difference between this book and Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays that I just finished , not too long ago. This book was not all happy, but it was definitely optimistic. Apparently he wrote it during the pandemic in 2020 so I’m guessing it landed like a tall glass of ice water in the desert. There was a lot of nostalgic references here for me. Those, combined with his optimism, made it a real fun listen. I’m glad I picked it up and read it alongside my daughter. It motivated her to read it as well and not just treat it as a school assignment that she had to get over with. - https://dougmejia.com/2026/07/06/finished-listening-to-slouching-towards.html

Finished listening to…: Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays by Joan Didion 📚 This was a great book of essays, albeit, not always a happy one. It was a window into times and places that existed long ago, before my time. Didion s writing is so vivid, that I can still see the portrayal of her experiences even after finishing it. The narrator, Maya Hawke , had a lot to do with this, of course. I enjoyed the whole book, but the essays that resonated with me the most are: On Keeping a Notebook On Self-Respect I Can t Get That Monster out of My Mind On Morality On Going Home Rock of Ages #Essays #Books #JoanDidion - My Minimalist Writing Setup
May 4, 2026 · original
I wanted a minimal, distraction-free writing setup. While the BYOK system offers a cool dedicated screen, I realized my iPhone paired with iA Writer and my HexGear keyboard works perfectly. At $200, the BYOK is just too expensive for me to justify when I already have a great workflow. - Giving My Blog a Voice

I’ve started adding audio versions of my latest blog posts using ElevenLabs, since the built-in screen readers I rely on still sound robotic. The voices are fantastic, but the cost adds up fast, so for now only recent posts get the audio treatment. - https://dougmejia.com/2026/04/30/finished-listening-to-how-to.html

Finished Listening to…: How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius by Donald J. Robertson 📚 The audiobook, “ How to Think Like a Roman Emperor” by Donald Robertson was narrated by the author himself, which is usually not my preference. However, Robertson did a fantastic job bringing the book’s message and tone to life. He spoke in a slow, clear voice with what I think is a beautiful Scottish accent. It felt like he was talking to me directly, in a dignified and elegant way. I went in thinking the book was going to be all about Marcus Aurelius, his life, and how he lived. While it did touch on that, it wasn’t the main focus. The philosopher king was more of a framework Robertson used to hang his ideas about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Stoicism, and how these seemingly modern fields actually have roots that stretch back hundreds, if not thousands - https://dougmejia.com/2026/04/19/finished-reading-or-listening-to.html

Finished Listening to…: Apple The First 50 Years by David Pogue 📚 I really enjoyed this audiobook. David Pogue did a phenomenal job reading it himself. I especially enjoyed the actual audio clips he inserted of historical talks or Mac sound effects. There is also an easter egg in there 😉. I also purchased the hardcover version, so I can see the color pictures of things he talked about. I highly recommend it. 🎧 Listen to this post. A documentary led me to buy a pink 1958 Smith-Corona Super on eBay, and now I own three typewriters. I use them for journaling, sparking creativity at home, and reminding myself to slow down. - My MacBook Neo Work Kit

I recently picked up the MacBook Neo to lighten my load on tech jobs. It is an amazing little machine, but a laptop is only as good as the gear you pair with it. Here is a look inside my modular, on-the-go tech kit. - My New MacBook Neo

I just bought the new MacBook Neo and it genuinely surprised me. Despite a few budget-friendly cut corners like a non-backlit keyboard, it feels premium, runs incredibly fast, and is a fantastic deal. Here are my first impressions. - Letters I Will Never Send

Just downloaded the Halide app on my iPhone and was playing around with their MKIII Preview when I saw this beam of light coming in through my window. I set the app to Process Zero , tilted my phone a bit and took this shot. It reminded me of a light saber from Star Wars, which I thought was pretty cool. After I took the shot, I touched it up a bit within the Halide app (film grain and all) and came up with the final product above. Going to keep playing around with it and see what other photos I can make. #Halide #App #iPhone #Photography #ProcessZero - My Defaults

Inspired by The Pen Addict Ep. 704 and their accompanying blog post , I created my own page listing my Analog Defaults . Of course, I did not stop there. I also created a page for my App Defaults , after seeing Robb Knight s apps page . I was surprised that I use a lot of the same apps he does. But wait… there s more. I also added my Ham Radio Defaults , too. Check it out! - How I Vibe Coded My First App

I needed math resources for my students but couldn’t find exactly what I needed. Despite not being a programmer, I used Claude to “vibe code” a custom math quiz generator. It was easier than expected and resulted in a tailored tool for my classroom. - MPU #836 - Stephen Robles Nailed It!

New co-host Stephen Robles nails his debut on Mac Power Users. I was nervous about the change, but his energy and chemistry with David Sparks made it feel seamless. Big shoes to fill, but he’s got the knowledge and passion. Excited for what’s next! - Revisiting Simplenote
Jan 29, 2026 · original
I decided to give Simplenote another look to see if it fits my workflow. I love the speed, cross-platform syncing, and Markdown support, but the lack of encryption at rest is a major dealbreaker. It is great for quick scratchpads, but I am hesitant to store anything sensitive there. - Winter Field Day 2026

Winter Field Day is happening this weekend! Whether you are a licensed ham or just curious, it is a great chance to connect with local groups like the Everglades Amateur Radio Club. Get on the air, test your gear, or just stop by for the camaraderie. See you there!
